Purpose: The objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess confidence in wheelchair mobility in Dutch youth (WheelCon-Mobility Dutch Youth). Methods: (1) A forward–backward translation process was used to translate the original WheelCon-M from English to Dutch. (2) Items related to wheelchair mobility in Dutch youth were selected and adapted based on focus groups with youth, parents and health care professionals to create the WheelCon-Mobility Dutch Youth. (3) The WheelCon-Mobility Dutch Youth and the Utrecht Pediatric Wheelchair Mobility Skills Test 2.0 (UP-WMST 2.0) were administered to 62 participants to evaluate internal consistency and construct validity. Results: Translation and cultural adaptation led to general adaptations in instructions, sentence structure and response scale. At the item level, 24 items were included with (n = 17) and without (n = 7) adaptation, 10 items were deleted and 7 new items were included. The WheelCon-Mobility Dutch Youth had an excellent Cronbach’s alpha of 0.924 and a significant correlation (r = 0.44, p < .001) with the UP-WMST 2.0. Conclusions: This study resulted in the adaptation of the WheelCon-M into the WheelCon-Mobility for Dutch youth using a manual wheelchair. Our study suggests there is evidence supporting the internal consistency and construct validity of the WheelCon-Mobility Dutch Youth. Implications for Rehabilitation The WheelCon-Mobility Dutch Youth is a newly developed tool for assessing confidence in wheelchair mobility in Dutch youth using a manual wheelchair. It is important to assess performance and confidence in wheelchair mobility in paediatric rehabilitation.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of a combination of wheelchair mobility skills (WMS) training and exercise training on physical activity (PA), WMS, confidence in wheelchair mobility, and physical fitness. Methods: Youth using a manual wheelchair (n = 60) participated in this practice-based intervention, with a waiting list period (16 weeks), exercise training (8 weeks), WMS training (8 weeks), and follow-up (16 weeks). Repeated measures included: PA (Activ8), WMS (Utrecht Pediatric Wheelchair Mobility Skills Test), confidence in wheelchair mobility (Wheelchair Mobility Confidence Scale), and physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, (an)aerobic performance) and were analysed per outcome parameter using a multilevel model analyses. Differences between the waiting list and training period were determined with an unpaired sample t-test. Results: Multilevel model analysis showed significant positive effects for PA (p = 0.01), WMS (p < 0.001), confidence in wheelchair mobility (p < 0.001), aerobic (p < 0.001), and anaerobic performance (p < 0.001). Unpaired sample t-tests underscored these effects for PA (p < 0.01) and WMS (p < 0.001). There were no effects on cardiorespiratory fitness. The order of training (exercise before WMS) had a significant effect on confidence in wheelchair mobility. Conclusions: A combination of exercise and WMS training appears to have significant positive long-term effects on PA, WMS, confidence in wheelchair mobility, and (an)aerobic performance in youth using a manual wheelchair.Implications for rehabilitationExercise training and wheelchair mobility skills (WMS) training can lead to a sustained improvement in physical activity (PA) in youth using a manual wheelchair.These combined trainings can also lead to a sustained increase in WMS, confidence in wheelchair mobility, and (an)aerobic performance.More attention is needed in clinical practice and in research towards improving PA in youth using a manual wheelchair.

Research on migrant youth makes two longstanding assumptions: that they are immobile following their own or their parents’ migration and that their resource environments are confined to their country of residence. Recent investigations of transnational youth mobility question both assumptions, showing that migrant youth – including the first and second generations – are highly mobile, and that their mobility has multiple impacts on their lives. This paper seeks to add to this growing literature by conceptualising as ‘transnational resources’ the perspectives, values, knowledge, and skills that migrant youth gain from their mobility between their countries of origin and residence and which become meaningful in various aspects of their multi-local (or what we call transnational) lives. Drawing on ethnographic data with 81 young people who are mobile between Ghana and three European countries (Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands), we analyse the three main transnational resources we identified – enhanced sense of self, adaptability, and future outlook. Engaging the dual analytical lenses of temporalities and trajectories, we show both how transnational resources are gained through embodied mobility experiences and how they become meaningful in migrant youth’s lives across time and space.

In een groeiend aantal publicaties is uitgewerkt hoe schulden en armoede de werking en ontwikkeling van onze hersenen beïnvloeden (WRR, 2017; Blair&Cybele Raver, 2016, Daminger et al., 2015, Pavetti, 2014). De publicaties vragen aandacht voor de dynamiek van chronische stress die mensen als het ware gijzelt om hun situatie met succes te ontgroeien. De taaiheid van de problematiek en het niet behalen van de beleidsdoelen zijn dus niet eenvoudig toe te schrijven aan een tekort aan motivatie bij de doelgroep. De inzichten over de effecten van schaarste op het cognitieve functioneren vormen de basis van de aanpak Mobility Mentoring®. Deze aanpak uit de Verenigde Staten is ontwikkeld door de organisatie EMPath en heeft als doel om economische zelfredzaamheid te bevorderen. Hoewel er op dit moment geen hard bewijs is voor de effectiviteit van Mobility Mentoring®, zijn er wel veelbelovende resultaten. Een grootschalige evaluatie door de Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families - een niet-gerandomiseerde vergelijking- liet zien dat deelnemers van Mobility Mentoring® op meer uitkomstmaten significante vooruitgang boekten dan deelnemers aan een ander programma (Washington State Department of Early Learning, 2016). Deze positieve uitkomsten waren in 2016 aanleiding voor de Hogeschool Utrecht en Platform31 voor een werkbezoek bij EMPath. Op basis van de verkregen inzichten en de beschikbare literatuur concludeerden de onderzoekers dat Mobility Mentoring® in Nederland kan bijdragen aan de doorontwikkeling van de dienstverlening voor mensen met multiproblematiek (Jungmann & Wesdorp, 2017).

Mobility Mentoring® combineert het onderwerp armoede met de laatste inzichten vanuit de hersenwetenschap over de effecten van schaarste en armoede en de ontwikkelbaarheid van hersenfuncties. Deze nieuwe aanpak helpt mensen bij de aanpak van hun financiële en sociale problemen. Het lectoraat Schulden & Incasso van de Hogeschool Utrecht, Platform31 en Impuls ambiëren een effectievere aanpak van financiële problematiek van huishoudens en zochten naar organisaties die de inzichten uit de Schaarste-theorie op een vruchtbare manier vertalen naar hun dagelijkse praktijk.

This study assesses the evolutionary leadership theory and the natural leadership instrument of Van Vugt and Ahuja (2011) in the context of youth elite football. The Evolutionary Leadership Theory is a comprehensive new way of looking at leadership that suggests environmental pressures influence the choice of who becomes the leader. The results revealed that the concept of natural leadership, as measured using the six natural leaders questionnaire, cannot be applied to the context of youth football. The preliminary data showed that natural leadership in youth sport requires a more basic framework of leadership consisting of communication, resources and focus on competition.

The online environment, where the boundaries between the domains of home, school, work, and leisure are blurred, poses new challenges for youth work practice. Due to limited research on this subject matter, the theoretical underpinnings of the online youth work practice are constrained. The fulfilment of youth work’s aims online, the position it can take in the online context, and its relation to its partners in the online lifeworld need a theoretical base. This paper seeks to analyse the role of youth work in the online lifeworld according to adolescents and youth work’s partners. The research was conducted in the Netherlands in collaboration with 14 youth work organisations. A qualitative research design was used: group conversations with young people and semi-structured interviews with youth work’s partners (i.e., parents, schools, informal networks, neighbourhood support teams, police, and municipal officials). The findings indicate that youth work in the online lifeworld, according to the respondents, is part of the general youth work practice, with a primary role of addressing the developmental needs of young people and creating new developmental opportunities. This role is expected to be fulfilled by engaging and connecting with young people in the online lifeworld and providing them instrumental, informational, socioemotional, and cognitive support. To do so, according to the partners, youth workers can make use of their vantage position in the online relationship with adolescents in order to access online information relevant for support and prudent prevention aimed at adolescents’ development. This vantage position may potentially encourage a collaboration between young people and partners, and between the online and offline youth work practice.

Background Testing aerobic fitness in youth is important because of expected relationships with health. Objective The purpose of the study was to estimate the validity and reliability of the Shuttle Ride Test in youth who have spina bifida and use a wheelchair for mobility and sport. Design Ths study is a validity and reliability study. Methods The Shuttle Ride Test, Graded Wheelchair Propulsion Test, and skill-related fitness tests were administered to 33 participants for the validity study (age = 14.5 ± 3.1 y) and to 28 participants for the reliability study (age = 14.7 ± 3.3 y). Results No significant differences were found between the Graded Wheelchair Propulsion Test and the Shuttle Ride Test for most cardiorespiratory responses. Correlations between the Graded Wheelchair Propulsion Test and the Shuttle Ride Test were moderate to high (r = .55–.97). The variance in peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) could be predicted for 77% of the participants by height, number of shuttles completed, and weight, with large prediction intervals. High correlations were found between number of shuttles completed and skill-related fitness tests (CI = .73 to −.92). Intraclass correlation coefficients were high (.77–.98), with a smallest detectable change of 1.5 for number of shuttles completed and with coefficients of variation of 6.2% and 6.4% for absolute VO2peak and relative VO2peak, respectively. Conclusions When measuring VO2peak directly by using a mobile gas analysis system, the Shuttle Ride Test is highly valid for testing VO2peak in youth who have spina bifida and use a wheelchair for mobility and sport. The outcome measure of number of shuttles represents aerobic fitness and is also highly correlated with both anaerobic performance and agility. It is not possible to predict VO2peak accurately by using the number of shuttles completed. Moreover, the Shuttle Ride Test is highly reliable in youth with spina bifida, with a good smallest detectable change for the number of shuttles completed.
