3The third industrial revolution, triggered by Internet communication and renewable energies, can be experienced in so-called FabLabs that empower users to ‘make almost anything’. Although this does not change the need for designers to have making and prototyping skills, there is no doubt the revolution impacts the design profession in terms of skills required and design methodologies and practices. So, what does this mean for design education? In the current work, we elaborate upon the role FabLabs can play in design education. We developed an elective course and reflect upon the lessons learned in this particular course, but also how the peer learning enhanced a lab community. Interestingly, the FabLab became an interface to the city, a creative hotspot open to practicing, making, co-creation and participatory design skills.

Fablab project / HOWTO documentation sharing has not had a major focus on Fablab network development so far. To this end, a series of "platform" workshops and calls have been taking place as of August 2010, covering topics from (online) community development in general to formalizing project descriptions in order to accommodate different web platforms used in the distributed Fablab network (initial proposal for open hardware information interchange format - FabML) The goal of the proposed talk is threefold: 1) To demonstrate the checking in & checking out concept for documenting Fablab projects on Drupal platform as part of the lab visit developed at ProtoSpace (Fablab Utrecht, NL) and use of Wordpress as documentation tool 2) To demonstrate project documentation aggregation from Fablabs using different open source content management systems used within the network (Drupal, Wordpress, Mediawiki being main ones currently in use), and first practical experiments with aggregation and FabML. 3) in the context of the Open Knowledge conference, opening a discussion on open documentation formats for open source hardware documentation.

Digital media allowed for the emergence of new artistic practices and innovative modes of production. In particular, the advent of Internet and digital technologies drastically enhanced the ability for multiple authors to collaborate towards the creation of large-scale collaborative works, which stand in contrast to the traditional understanding that artistic production is essentially an individual activity. The significance of these practices in the physical world is illustrated by the recent deployment of FabLabs: Fabrication Laboratories that employ innovative technologies – such as, most notably, 3D printing, which is recently gaining the most interest – to encourage the development of new methods of artistic production based on participation and interaction between peers. By promoting a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach, Fablabs constitute an attempt to transpose the open source mode of production from the domain of software into the field of art and design. Yet, as opposed to the information realm (where scarcity has been added artificially – by legal means – to inherently abundant resources like software and creative expression), artistic and design production in the physical world is riddled by the problem of material scarcity: physical resources are inherently limited and cannot be reproduced without using, converting or otherwise disposing of others kinds of resources.Over time, open source practices have managed to “hack” these provisions by means of contractual instruments designed to eliminate artificial scarcity so as re-instate the original state of abundance in the information realm. One has to wonder whether similar instruments could be conceived to eliminate – or,at least, reduce – material scarcity in the physical world. Starting with a quick and dirty trial at Fab8 in Wellington, New Zeeland, the Fab Lab community has produced a considerable body of research over the past seven years. Together with colleagues Betty Barrett, Tomas Diez and Cindy Kohtala I’ve been carefully developing this endeavour to collect and present research that has been done at FabLabs, with FabLabs, through FabLabs, and for FabLabs. In this paper I recount how the research papers stream developed, I track the topics and how they evolved over time, I present some of my personal highlights, and I try to relate them to the themes of the Third Digital Revolution.

The Fab 25 research papers stream includes original scholarly writing from researchers studying the Fab Lab movement, its ambitions and its impact from a wide range of disciplines, including computer science, engineering, science and technology studies, business and management, education, urban studies, media and design, and many more.

The commitment of the Fab Lab community to participate in processes of commons-based knowledge production thus also includes global knowledge sharing. For sharing back into the global commons, new knowledge needs however to be documented in a way that allows to share it by the means of information and communication technologies. So far, there are no empirical studies that provide insights into the question whether and how knowledge is indeed shared globally in the Fab Lab community, and how the above mentioned challenges are experienced and dealt with by the Fab Lab members. This paper reports an empirical study that aimed at closing this gap based. The study was based on qualitative interviews with sixteen Fab Lab users. In these interviews, the responded seventeen projects that were analysed as case studies. The case studies revealed, that knowledge sharing is not impeded by the barriers discussed elsewhere in literature such as motivational or technological impediments. Nevertheless, the cases showed that global open knowledge sharing was far from the norm, and sharing remains mainly local and personal.

FabLearn Netherlands invited submissions to the first FabLearn conference in the Netherlands that was held September 28, 2018, preceding Maker Faire Eindhoven September 29 and 30. This publication contains the accepted papers that were presented at the conference.

The emergence of collaborative workspaces is a remarkable feature of contemporary cities. These spaces have appeared rapidly, catering for the locational needs of self-employed workers, start-ups and small-size companies. The objective of this paper is to provide an analysis of four categories of collaborative workspaces (accelerators, incubators, coworking spaces and FabLabs). For the case of Amsterdam, we conducted a website content analysis to assess how these spaces position and present themselves towards potential users. The empirical evidence shows that these spaces promise a variety of benefits, ranging from business development to access to social networks. This diversity illustrates the emergence of distinct work settings in an economic environment characterised by the need to work in a social environment that at the same time stimulates networking and collaboration.
