RAPPORT
Column.

Summary: By involving HRM bachelor students (higher professional education) in a research project in Amsterdam, we tried to contribute to ‘Bildung’ of the students: critical self-awareness, and empathy development in education. The question that is central in this article is: What contribution to ‘Bildung’ did the research project ‘participating in a district of Amsterdam’ offered to the participating HRM students? We have interviewed in depth ten students who participated in the research project. Based on our exploratory research, we conclude that this project has made a contribution to ‘Bildung’. However, in the current educational curriculum there is no emphasis on the role of a component such as critical self-reflection. To offer the possibility to develop ‘Bildung’ it is necessary to pay attention to the practical sense and the theoretical foundation in the curriculum. Such a curriculum can contribute to the start of ‘Bildung’.

In this chapter Anouk Zuurmond explores the notion of Bildung. The chapter starts with a review of social literature on Bildung and an analysis of fundamental Dutch policy documents. It then describes a subsidised research project run by a consortium of two research-oriented universities, two secondary vocational education (mbo) institutions, and the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, which attempts to move away of the aforementioned perspective.
BOEKDEEL
Bildung can be seen as a pedagogy of Interruption that opens up a “concern for publicness” (Biesta 2011) This in order "to disclose the identity of the agent, and to actualize our capacity for freedom. To perform what is “infinitely improbable”. (Arendt 1958) The function of such education is Subjectification: the ways in which students can be(come) subjects in their own right and not just remain objects of the desires and directions of others. (Biesta 2010).
POSTER
A Europe-wide revival of the idea of bildung as a goal for education has been gaining momentum for a couple of decades. The main idea is that bildung enables teachers, researchers and policy makers “… to explore the ways in which education might be about something more than simply the transmission of our facts and values to the next generation,” to use a quote by Gert Biesta, the Dutch professor of educational theory and pedagogy at the University of Edinburgh. Others often narrow bildung down to a process of becoming a whole person or cultivating one’s self towards civic excellence. Those ideas come from an older tradition with bildung thinkers such as the 19th century Prussian minister of education, Wilhelm von Humboldt, who promoted bildung as a key objective of public education.
BOEKDEEL
This article reconceptualises Bildung by positioning educational worlds as its primary horizon. Educational theory has often grounded Bildung in competing ontological horizons, including cultural participation, individual self-formation, political emancipation, critical resistance, transformative self-world relations, and world-centred education. Rather than asking which of these provides the proper foundation for Bildung, this article explores how Bildung can be understood as a plural pedagogical concept capable of engaging this ontological plurality. Drawing on Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), educational reality is conceived as a plurality of educational worlds emerging through encounters between human and non-human objects. Through ontological acts – including imagination, beholding, embodiment, and allure – educational worlds disclose possibilities for experience, reflection, and experimentation. Bildung is therefore reconceptualised as an ethical-aesthetic practice of inhabiting educational worlds through which an educational journey may emerge, revealing different educational qualities, possibilities for becoming, and ways of being.

This paper explores how a Bildung-making approach underpinned by embodied pedagogy and didactics can contribute to a learner becoming a person and a teacher’s development of artistry. We argue that the existing Cartesian divide between mind and body can explain the fundamental differences in how teachers and learners perceive Bildung within the Dutch educational system: either as an ‘academic’ phenomenon (for ‘the head’) or as vocational (for ‘the hand’). In this study, Dutch (pre)vocational teachers designed and co-created Bildung prototypes in professional learning communities (PLCs) and classrooms. The teachers used ‘real life’ questions from their teaching practices as their departure point to develop Bildung-making. The results of the study show that when Bildung education becomes an embodied maker’s process, it enables learners to transcend barriers to educational equity. Co-created enjoyment and social emotional learning come to the foreground during Bildung-making, thus fostering inclusive education.
