Dynamic stall phenomena carry the risk of negative damping and instability in wind turbine blades. It is crucial to model these phenomena accurately to reduce inaccuracies in predicting design driving (fatigue and extreme) loads. Some of the inaccuracies in current dynamic stall models may be due to the fact that they are not properly designed for high angles of attack and that they do not specifically describe vortex shedding behaviour. The Snel second-order dynamic stall model attempts to explicitly model unsteady vortex shedding. This model could therefore be a valuable addition to a turbine design software such as Bladed. In this paper the model has been validated with oscillating aerofoil experiments, and improvements have been proposed for reducing inaccuracies. The proposed changes led to an overall reduction in error between the model and experimental data. Furthermore the vibration frequency prediction improved significantly. The improved model has been implemented in Bladed and tested against small-scale turbine experiments at parked conditions. At high angles of attack the model looks promising for reducing mismatches between predicted and measured (fatigue and extreme) loading, leading to possible lower safety factors for design and more cost-efficient designs for future wind turbines.

Offering time windows to receivers of last-mile delivery is becoming a distinguishing factor. However, we see that in practice carriers have to create routes for their vehicles based on destination information, that is just being revealed when a parcel arrives in the depot. The parcel has to be assigned directly to a vehicle, making this a Dynamic Assignment Vehicle Routing Problem. Incorporating time windows is hard in this case. In this paper an approach is presented to solve this problem including Time Windows. A comparison is made with a real observation and with a solution method for the base problem

Carboxylated cellulose is an important product on the market, and one of the most well-known examples is carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). However, CMC is prepared by modification of cellulose with the extremely hazardous compound monochloracetic acid. In this project, we want to make a carboxylated cellulose that is a functional equivalent for CMC using a greener process with renewable raw materials derived from levulinic acid. Processes to achieve cellulose with a low and a high carboxylation degree will be designed.
Flying insects like dragonflies, flies, bumblebees are able to couple hovering ability with the ability for a quick transition to forward flight. Therefore, they inspire us to investigate the application of swarms of flapping-wing mini-drones in horticulture. The production and trading of agricultural/horticultural goods account for the 9% of the Dutch gross domestic product. A significant part of the horticultural products are grown in greenhouses whose extension is becoming larger year by year. Swarms of bio-inspired mini-drones can be used in applications such as monitoring and control: the analysis of the data collected enables the greenhouse growers to achieve the optimal conditions for the plants health and thus a high productivity. Moreover, the bio-inspired mini-drones can detect eventual pest onset at plant level that leads to a strong reduction of chemicals utilization and an improvement of the food quality. The realization of these mini-drones is a multidisciplinary challenge as it requires a cross-domain collaboration between biologists, entomologists and engineers with expertise in robotics, mechanics, aerodynamics, electronics, etc. Moreover a co-creation based collaboration will be established with all the stakeholders involved. With this approach we can integrate technical and social-economic aspects and facilitate the adoption of this new technology that will make the Dutch horticulture industry more resilient and sustainable.
At gas stations, tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is added to odorless biogas (and natural gas) for quick leak detection through its distinctive smell. However, for low bio and natural gas velocities, evaporation is not complete and the odorization process is compromised, causing odor fluctuations and undesired liquid accumulation on the pipeline. Inefficient odorization not only endangers the safety and well-being of gas users, but also increases gas distribution companies OPEX. To enhance THT evaporation during low bio and natural gas flow, an alternative approach involves improve the currently used atomization process. Electrohydrodynamic Atomization (EHDA), also known as Electrospray (ES), is a technology that uses strong electric fields to create nano and micro droplets with a narrow size distribution. This relatively new atomization technology can improve the odorization process as it can manipulate droplet sizes according to the natural and bio gas flow. BiomEHD aims to develop, manufacture, and test an EHDA odorization system for applying THT in biogas odorization.
