Augmented Play Spaces (APS) are (semi-) public environments where playful interaction isfacilitated by enriching the existing environment with interactive technology. APS canpotentially facilitate social interaction and physical activity in (semi-)public environments. Incontrolled settings APS show promising effects. However, people’s willingness to engagewith APSin situ, depends on many factors that do not occur in aforementioned controlledsettings (where participation is obvious). To be able to achieve and demonstrate thepositive effects of APS when implemented in (semi-)public environments, it is important togain more insight in how to motivate people to engage with them and better understandwhen and how those decisions can be influenced by certain (design) factors. TheParticipant Journey Map (PJM) was developed following multiple iterations. First, based on related work, and insights gained from previously developed andimplemented APS, a concept of the PJM was developed. Next, to validate and refinethe PJM, interviews with 6 experts with extensive experience with developing andimplementing APS were conducted. Thefirst part of these interviews focused oninfluential (design) factors for engaging people into APS. In the second part, expertswere asked to provide feedback on thefirst concept of the PJM. Based on the insightsfrom the expert interviews, the PJM was adjusted and refined. The Participant JourneyMap consists of four layers: Phases, States, Transitions and Influential Factors. There aretwo overarchingphases:‘Onboarding’and‘Participation’and 6statesa (potential)participant goes through when engaging with an APS:‘Transit,’‘Awareness,’‘Interest,’‘Intention,’‘Participation,’‘Finishing.’Transitionsindicate movements between states.Influential factorsare the factors that influence these transitions. The PJM supportsdirections for further research and the design and implementation of APS. Itcontributes to previous work by providing a detailed overview of a participant journeyand the factors that influence motivation to engage with APS. Notable additions are thedetailed overview of influential factors, the introduction of the states‘Awareness,’‘Intention’and‘Finishing’and the non-linear approach. This will support taking intoaccount these often overlooked, key moments in future APS research and designprojects. Additionally, suggestions for future research into the design of APS are given.

BackgroundIt can be very challenging for practitioners to talk with autistic children, especially when the conversation calls for self-regulation. Self-regulation is inextricably linked to awareness of oneself and others in social contexts. Encouraging the need for autonomy could help increase self-awareness and awareness of others in social events, which in turn could strengthen self-regulation. However, little is known about how autonomy influences competence in reasoning about self and others when regarding social events in which autistic children participate. This study explores the reasoning of self-other awareness on a microlevel timescale using ipsative, dynamic approaches to autism. The central question in this study is: to what extent can autonomy-provided scaffolding (APS) elicit high levels of reasoning about self-others in social events (RSS) over time?MethodWe used video-taped interaction data from three sessions between one autistic child and a practitioner, contextualized by a set of animated DSM-5-based items of social events on which the child was asked to reflect. Interaction variables were the child's level of RSS and the practitioner's level of APS. We coded the real-time interaction.ResultsFirst, when exploring the dynamics of the microdata, we found contingency over time within sessions. Second, over the sessions, the practitioner showed a stable high level of APS, whereas the child's level of RSS increased. Third, a coupling effect between the level of APS and RSS was found within and over sessions. Salient is that the child and practitioner increasingly adapted to each other over the three sessions, and over time, high-level APS of the practitioner elicited higher levels of RSS of the child.DiscussionBecause the child showed a significant improvement in RSS over time, our research question provides a promising perspective. Contrary to what one might expect in autism, APS supported the performance of the child in reasoning about self-others in social situations. These outcomes underline the importance of giving voice to autistic children. The results may encourage researchers to develop strategies and tools that can help give a voice to children, to gain more insight into the child's reasoning. This may further develop self-other awareness and self-regulation in the social events of autistic children.

Patients undergoing major surgery are at risk of complications and delayed recovery. Prehabilitation has shown promise in improving postoperative outcomes. Offering prehabilitation by means of mHealth can help overcome barriers to participating in prehabilitation and empower patients prior to major surgery. We developed the Be Prepared mHealth app, which has shown potential in an earlier pilot study.

Purpose: This research aimed to explore factors associated with patient-reported breast and abdominal scar quality after deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction (BR). Material and Methods: This study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional survey in which women after DIEP flap BR were invited to complete an online survey on breast and abdominal scarring. The online survey was distributed in the Netherlands in several ways in order to reach a diverse population of women. Outcomes were assessed with the Patient Scale of the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS). Additional items were assessed with a numeric rating scale (NRS). Results: A total of 248 women completed the survey. There was a statistically significant worse POSAS scar appraisal for the abdominal scar compared with the breast scar. The vast majority of women reported high scores on at least one scar characteristic of their breast scar or ab- dominal scar. Overall, color, stiffness, thickness, and irregularity scored higher than pain and itching. Women were only moderately positive about the size, noticeability, location, and the information provided regarding scarring. Conclusion: It is crucial to address the inevitability of scars in patient education before a DIEP flap BR, with a particular focus on the abdominal scar, as women experience abdominal scars significantly worse than their breast scars. Providing more information on the experience of other women and the expected appearance will contribute to having realistic expectations while allowing them to make well-informed decisions.

In this chapter, I look back at the implementation of W12-16, a major reform of mathematics education in the lower grades of general secondary education and pre-vocational secondary education in the Netherlands including all students aged 12–16. The nationwide implementation of W12-16 started in 1990 and envisioned a major change in what and how mathematics was taught and learned. The content was broadened from algebra and geometry to algebra, geometry and measurement, numeracy, and data processing and statistics. The learning trajectories and the instruction theory were based on the ideas of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME): the primary processes used in the classroom were to be guided re-invention and problem solving. ‘Ensuring usability’ in the title of this chapter refers to the aim of the content being useful and understandable for all students, but also to the involvement of all relevant stakeholders in the implementation project, including teachers, students, parents, editors, curriculum and assessment developers, teacher educators, publishers, media and policy makers. Finally, I reflect on the current state of affairs more than 20 years after the nationwide introduction. The main questions to be asked are: Have the goals been reached? Was the implementation successful?
