In response to globalisation and internationalisation of both higher education and the job market, The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) has seen a considerable increase in English-medium courses, i.e. non-language subjects taught through English. Internationally, the rise of English-medium instruction (EMI) has led to research on, and discussion about the possible side-effects of a change in instructional language. More specifically, whether using a foreign language as the medium of instruction has a negative impact on teaching and learning. This paper reports the findings of a pilot research project into the implications of English-medium instruction (EMI) as perceived by students and teachers of the bachelor program Commercial Economics at the Faculty of Business, Finance and Administration at THUAS. Research methods used to collect data include face-to-face interviews with both students and lecturers involved in EMI subject courses, a student questionnaire, and lesson observations. Despite regular exposure to English and an adequate self-perceived English proficiency, results show that a considerable number of students, as well as teaching staff are experiencing difficulties with English-medium instruction and that for many EMI is not as efficient in transferring academic content as instruction in the mother tongue.
Foreword : Education is the key to widen people’s opportunities in our globalizing world. The Hague, city of Justice and Peace, is rapidly improving its position in higher education. New universities and academies have established themselves in recent years. They broaden the offer of courses, degrees and research opportunities. The Municipal Government and The Hague University of Applied Sciences invited all interested international organizations, corporations, researchers and educational institutes to reflect on the best pattern of international higher education that should be organized in the future. Education should service the needs of both the Dutch and foreign population groups in The Hague and the region around it. With hundreds of large and small international institutions, tens of thousands of employees from abroad, as well as a growing interest of The Hague’s Dutch citizens, it is important to design the best possible facilities for higher education. This report summarizes the views and proposals expressed during the working conference. The reader may find many useful ideas for further development.
What is the current career of alumni from the International Business School of hte Hanze University of Applied Sciences. Where do they work and what is the relevance of Internationalisation in the careers of these Alumni.IBS Hanze alumni work Internationally, some 30 % of the Dutch and Germnan alumni work in other countries than their nationality. For alumni of other nationalities both germany and the Netherlands seem te be countries of settlement. Alumni work in majority for larger companies that operate Internationally. This research explores if and how the career of IBS Hanze UAS alumni can be considered international.Country of settlement, nationality and home base of the employing company were considered in a descriptive research. Data was collected form the public LinkedIn profile of 2050 alumni as well as Hanze UAS internal databases. A smal qualitative research was conducted with 46 respondents to explore the questions why and how Internationalisation was relevant for the alumni.
