This thesis contextualises the portfolio of relevant works that Than van Nispen created during the period of his Master of Music studies from 2014 to 2016.The projects described involve interactive live instrumental music, which is the subject of the thesis, and the interactive music is mainly based on video-game music methods. The projects that do not have an interactive system for the music at least have a set of rules for play and interaction for, or with the music.A focus of this Master of Music studies is the exploration of solutions for interactive music, based on game music methods, with the use of traditional music notation.

Geleide Audiomotor Exploratie (GAME) is een innovatieve lesmethode waarmee slechthorenden met een Cochleair Implantaat (CI) piano kunnen leren spelen zonder muzieknotatie. Het doel van GAME is om door actief muziek te maken, transfereffecten van muziek- naar het spraakdomein te realiseren. Hierdoor kunnen CI-gebruikers zowel muziek als spraak beter gaan verstaan. Hoewel GAME ontworpen is om in de gewone lespraktijk gebruikt te worden, vereist het lesgeven met GAME nieuwe kennis en vaardigheden van pianodocenten. Dit onderzoek is daarom gericht op het ontwikkelen van instructiemateriaal en scholing voor het lesgeven met GAME. Zes pianodocenten en een ‘critical friend’ deden mee aan dit onderwijskundig ontwerp onderzoek. Tijdens het onderzoek zijn de lesmethode en het lesmateriaal aangepast en doorontwikkeld. De uitkomsten van het onderzoek laten zien dat docenten een ‘totaalpakket’ nodig hebben: (1) een handleiding gecombineerd met (2) demonstratie video’s, (3) lesmateriaal en voorbeeld lesplannen, (4) workshops en (5) collegiaal overleg. Deelnemende docenten vonden vooral de video’s gecombineerd met uitleg belangrijk omdat GAME totaal anders is dan traditionele lesmethodes. Het onderzoek heeft geleid tot suggesties voor implementatie in lespraktijken en Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs en aanbevelingen voor mogelijke toepassingen van GAME bij andere doelgroepen, zoals leerlingen met leerproblemen.

AI tools increasingly shape how we discover, make and experience music. While these tools can have the potential to empower creativity, they may fundamentally redefine relationships between stakeholders, to the benefit of some and the detriment of others. In this position paper, we argue that these tools will fundamentally reshape our music culture, with profound effects (for better and for worse) on creators, consumers and the commercial enterprises that often connect them. By paying careful attention to emerging Music AI technologies and developments in other creative domains and understanding the implications, people working in this space could decrease the possible negative impacts on the practice, consumption and meaning of music. Given that many of these technologies are already available, there is some urgency in conducting analyses of these technologies now. It is important that people developing and working with these tools address these issues now to help guide their evolution to be equitable and empower creativity. We identify some potential risks and opportunities associated with existing and forthcoming AI tools for music, though more work is needed to identify concrete actions which leverage the opportunities while mitigating risks.

Abstract The emergence of new technologies such as mp3 and music streaming, and the accompanying digital transformation of the music industry, have led to the shift and change of the entire music industry’s value chain. While music is increasingly being consumed through digital channels, the number of empirical studies, particularly in the field of music copyright in the digital music industry, is limited. Every year, rightsholders of musical works, valued 2.5 billion dollars, remain unknown. The objectives of this study are twofold: First to understand and describe the structure and process of the Dutch music copyright system including the most relevant actors within the system and their relations. Second to apply evolutionary economics approach and Values Sensitive Design method within the context of music copyright through positive-empirical perspective. For studies of technological change in existing markets, the evolutionary economics literature provides a coherent and evidence-based foundation. The actors are generally perceived as being different, for example with regard to their access to information, their ability to handle information, their capital and knowledge base (asymmetric information). Also their norms, values and roles can differ. Based on an analysis of documents and held expert interviews, we find that the collection and distribution of the music copyright money is still based on obsolete laws, neoclassical paradigm and legacy IT-system. Finally, we conclude that the rightsholders are heterogenous and have asymmetrical information and negotiating power. The outcomes of this study contribute to create a better understanding of impact of digitization of music copyright industry and empower the stakeholders to proceed from a more informed perspective on redesigning and applying the future music copyright system and pre-digital norms and values amongst actors.

Abstract In this paper several meaningful audio icons of classic arcade games such as Pong, Donkey Kong, Mario World and Pac-Man are analyzed, using the PRAAT software for speech analysis and musical theory. The analysis results are used to describe how these examples of best practice sound design obtain their meaning in the player's perception. Some aspects can be related to the use of tonal hierarchy (e.g. Donkey Kong and Mario World) which is a western culture related aspect of musical meaning. Other aspects are related to universal expressions of meaning such as the theory of misattribution, prosody, vocalization and cross-modal perceptions such as brightness and the uncanny valley hypothesis. Recent studies in the field of cognitive neuroscience support the universal and meaningful potential of all these aspects. The relationship between language related prosody, vocalization and phonology, and music seems to be an especially successful design principle for universally meaningful music icons in game sound design.

The digital era has brought about profound changes in how music is created, distributed, and consumed, posing a need for modernizing the Dutch collective management system of music copyright to match the rapidly changing digital music industry. This study aims to identify the key stakeholders and their perceptions of the Dutch system of collective management of music copyright. Utilizing qualitative document analysis, the study examines a range of public and non-public documents, including income statements, annual reports from Collective Management Organizations (CMOs), and contracts between publishers and creators. The research is further enriched by twenty-four semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders such as composers, lyricists, music publishers, copyright lawyers, and CMO executives. The findings of the study highlight several issues like the outdated IT systems and the lack of data standardization within the system. The research also notes a contrast in organizational effectiveness: major publishers are well-organized and unified in their negotiations with Digital Service Providers (DSPs) and CMOs, effectively advocating for their rights. However, music copyright holders, despite their legal homogeneity, are either unorganized or ineffectively aligned, displaying diverse interests and varying levels of access to information, as well as differences in norms and values prioritization. The study is grounded in the economics of collective management (ECM) and makes a significant academic contribution to this field by introducing new empirical findings to ECMs core constructs and integrating theoretical perspectives. The research offers valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers, aiming to foster a more equitable music copyright management system in the digital context.

This article explores the integration of a co-mentoring scheme within the participatory music practice of Meaningful Music in Healthcare (MiMiC) in Dutch medical hospitals. Building upon prior research that revealed a shared aspiration among MiMiC musicians and nurses to enhance collaborative efforts, the study explores the role of interprofessional collaboration not only for the immediate impact of music on people in the hospital environment but also for nurturing the sustained growth of the professionals involved. This article explores the implications and outcomes of a co-mentoring scheme, which took place in the form of reflective conversations between participating musicians and nurses, and examine their form, the relationships they foster within the MiMiC practice, and their contribution to interprofessional collaboration in transdisciplinary arts and health practices.

In this article the work of power through discourse in music education in primary schools in the Netherlands is examined. After introducing the central concepts of culture, practice, discourse, and power, the current dominant musical discourse in the Netherlands is presented as expressed in three nested perspectives: the perspective of music as a specialist domain, the perspective of music as (essentially instrumental) performance, and the perspective of music as Art. Then, a central document in current music educational developments in Dutch primary schools is analyzed. It is demonstrated that specifically the perspectives of music as a specialist domain and (partly) music as (instrumental) performance have a strong presence in the document. The article finishes with calling for more attention to the workings of dominant musical discourse in music pedagogical debates.

Leisure constraints affecting participation can be divided into intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints. Only a few studies in the event industry have investigated the role of leisure constraints. These studies show different effects of leisure constraints on participation. The purpose of this article is to examine the influence of leisure constraints on revisit intention regarding music festivals. This study is of quantitative nature and utilizes survey research. A sample of 1,063 respondents was used within the analyses, measuring the influence of perceived constraints on revisit intention. The results show that intrapersonal constraints (a lack of importance and interest) and structural constraints (travel time, a lack of time, costs, and a lack of satisfaction with the festival area) significantly influence revisit intention. In line with results from other leisure industries, intrapersonal constraints show the strongest effects. Interpersonal constraints do not affect revisit intentions. Music festivals should ideally maintain a high level of engagement with the visitors throughout the year to ensure continuous involvement.
