What are the essential components of a doctorate program in mathematics education or didactics of mathematics concerning research, coursework, seminars, and collaboration? The purpose of this study was to learn from doctoral students across the world about how their programs in mathematics education are preparing them for research and teaching in mathematics education; how their programs provide academic research and writing support; and what they view as missing from their experiences. Online surveys, along with follow-up interviews from a subset of survey respondents, indicated that doctoral students from 17 different countries stressed the importance of international collaboration, examining fundamental theories of learning mathematics, and identified a need for more support with academic writing.

Atherosclerosis is the development of lipid-laden plaques in arteries and is nowadays considered as an inflammatory disease. It has been shown that high doses of ionizing radiation, as used in radiotherapy, can increase the risk of development or progression of atherosclerosis. To elucidate the effects of radiation on atherosclerosis, we propose a mathematical model to describe radiation-promoted plaque evelopment. This model distinguishes itself from other models by combining plaque initiation and plaque growth, and by incorporating information from biological experiments. It is based on two consecutive processes: a probabilistic dose-dependent plaque initiation process, followed by deterministic plaque growth.

This paper examines how the learning environment in primary education can be enhanced by stimulating the use of innovative ICT applications. In particular, this discussion focuses on mind tools as a means of leveraging ICT for the development of cognitive skills. The stimulating effect of mind tools on the thinking skills and thinking attitudes of students is examined. The various types of mind tools and a number of specific examples are closely examined. We consider how mind tools can contribute to the establishment of an ICT-rich learning environment within the domain of technology education in primary schools. We illustrate two specific applications of such mind tools and discuss how these contribute to the development of thinking skills.

Er wordt een 'state of the art' gegeven van de discussie over het nieuwe leren, de praktijk van het nieuwe leren en de bewijzen voor het nieuwe leren. Het lijkt erop dat momenteel sprake is van een keerpunt in het denken over het nieuwe leren. De discussie had voorheen vooral een ideologisch karakter, terwijl deze nu steeds meer een praktisch en professioneel karakter krijgt. In de scholen lag eerst de nadruk vooral op het proces, nu zien we signalen dat er daarnaast meer aandacht naar het kennisaspect uitgaat. Daarbij staat de vraag centraal welke kennis voor leerlingen belangrijk is om te verwerven in onze moderne (kennis)maatschappij. Deze ontwikkeling juich ik toe en daarom wordt aan het kennisaspect in deze oratie nadrukkelijk aandacht besteed. Het lectoraat heeft als doel om innovatieve scholen te ondersteunen met praktijkgericht onderzoek, aansluitend bij de ontwikkeling van scholen, gekoppeld aan de onderzoeksthema’s. Daarmee wil het lectoraat bijdragen aan de kennisbasis over nieuwe leervormen. Een belangrijke vraag is ook hoe de opleidingen toekomstige leerkrachten op hun nieuwe rollen en taken kunnen voorbereiden.
