Embedded connected computers are installed in homes in increasing numbers in the form of consumer IoT devices. These devices are often insufficiently protected against cyberattacks. In this research report, we propose several security requirements for consumer IoT devices. These requirements are suitable for enforcement through legislation and will significantly improve consumer IoT cybersecurity when implemented.This research report, commissioned by the Dutch Radiocommunications Agency, describes a threat model and significant security problems, derived from literature research. These assisted in evaluating more than 400 security measures, after which the top measures were summarised into eight essential security requirements. These requirements are easy to implement, easy to test, unambiguous, and greatly improve the cybersecurity of the products. We recommend standardisation agencies to make these requirements mandatory for all consumer IoT devices.

Consistency issues limit the sharing of horticultural data across multiple systems, resulting in challenges for users to analyze data effectively across various systems utilizing artificial intelligence technology. Introducing data governance principles can help standardize and unify data practices, making it easier for analysts to locate, comprehend, transfer and integrate data from diverse sources to enable data-driven horticulture. Implementing data governance and principles specific to horticulture can assist in standardizing the layout and format of data structures from different sources. This study aims to propose a new governance framework, Horti-IoT, based on the Data Management Body of Knowledge and several structured frameworks for the Internet of Things (IoT) governance that will lead to data-driven horticulture. This study is empirical in nature. The Dutch horticulture stakeholders are involved in this initiative, providing the data, knowledge, and experiences needed for this study. The data stream from various sources, including camera images, sap flow sensors, climate sensors and manually measured growth data. The key findings following the implementation of the Horti-IoT framework’s principles are reduced workload for data analysts, efficiency in plant monitoring, savings time in pre-processing, enhanced water resource management, reduced system administrator contacts and compliance with General Data Privacy Regulation. The new proposed Horti-IoT framework, compatible with Dutch horticulture, is presented. The data were obtained from the Lab greenhouse at the World Horti Centre in the Netherlands, in the framework of the Regionale SIA RAAK MKB call March 2022-September 2024 subsidy funds for project title ‘Gewasgroei Goed Gemeten (GeGoGe). The application of DC grids is gaining more attention in office applications. Especially since powering an office desk would not require a high power connection to the main AC grid but could be made sustainable using solar power and battery storage. This would result in fewer converters and further advanced grid utilization. In this paper, a sustainable desk power application is described that can be used for powering typical office appliances such as computers, lighting, and telephones. The desk will be powered by a solar panel and has a battery for energy storage. The applied DC grid includes droop control for power management and can either operate stand-alone or connected to other DC-desks to create a meshed-grid system. A dynamic DC nano-grid is made using multiple self-developed half-bridge circuit boards controlled by microcontrollers. This grid is monitored and controlled using a lightweight network protocol, allowing for online integration. Droop control is used to create dynamic power management, allowing automated control for power consumption and production. Digital control is used to regulate the power flow, and drive other applications, including batteries and solar panels. The practical demonstrative setup is a small-sized desktop with applications built into it, such as a lamp, wireless charging pad, and laptop charge point for devices up to 45W. User control is added in the form of an interactive remote wireless touch panel and power consumption is monitored and stored in the cloud. The paper includes a description of technical implementation as well as power consumption measurements.

In 2050 the Internet of Things - which processes and stores all sensor data - will require a multiple of all the current energy together in air traffic and meat consumption. Living an environmentally friendly life will be just a drop in the ocean. With every step we take, servers all over the world start to analyze and store sensor data from the smartphone in our pocket. Habermas states that the system supplants ("colonizes") the lifeworld. It is of great importance that economic and social disciplines make a serious effort to restore the balance between the system world and the lifeworld.

Design-based inquiries into the networked products of the Internet of Things (IoT) lack a coherent understanding of the effect of such products on society. This paper proposes a new taxonomy for networked products, which would allow articulation on their current state and future, and provide insights to designers for creating meaningful and aesthetic products of IoT. Central to this framework is the proposition that our current product-scape should be understood as a distribution of material agencies and best analyzed through the metaphor of “agency”. We identify three types of agencies, i.e., the Collector, the Actor, and the Creator, and discuss how this approach could create new design methodologies to create more meaningful networked products that would empower people in their everyday lives.

Light intensity and spectral composition notably impact the human circadian rhythm. The human body is a physiological system that regulates its sleep-awake cycle through a constant rhythm of light and darkness. For a long time, the lighting research field has been concerned with understanding this circadian rhythm to improve people's quality of life. To better understand the influence of light on the human circadian rhythm, a remote monitoring device was developed that reliably measures the light spectrum and human circadian rhythm in different environments, including Antarctica and a tropical location study. The designed apparatus aims to facilitate the comprehension of the impact of light on the human circadian rhythm and provide accessible measurements through cost-effective tools. Results show that the developed monitoring prototype can collect and transmit environmental and human data. Therefore, the low-cost equipment developed can be reproduced and used by research institutions to collect data in different environments and improve the understanding of the influence of light on human activities. The cross-sectional analysis of the collected data revealed evidence of the significant influence of light on regulating the human circadian rhythm in tropical and Antarctica case studies. The collected information makes it possible to predict human reactions to the light environment, correlate these responses with seasonal periods, and comprehend how various forms of artificial and natural light interact with individuals and their living spaces. This prototype offers a non-invasive tool for assessing sleep quality and daytime activities, providing knowledge of how lighting conditions can impact overall well-being.
