Background and aim ʹ Many countries signed the Paris Agreement to mitigate global average temperature rise. In this context, Dutch government decided to realize a reduction of 50% using resources and raw materials in 2030. This paper explores how practice-based research into facility operations can contribute to this aim. Methods / Methodology ʹ Practice-based research which includes direct observations, desk research, and participatory action research. Results ʹ This explorative research presents principles and suggestions for facility managers and procurement managers on how they can embed sustainable materials management in the organisation and how to take control of waste. The proposed suggestions are derived from practice-based research and presented as topics of attention for facility professionals. Originality ʹ Within education of Dutch universities of applied sciences and daily professional facility practices, the phenomenon of materials management is underexposed. To contribute to the national and international climate objectives, (future) facility professionals need better support to reduce waste. Bachelor students were involved throughout this research. This approach gave refreshing insights into waste at the end of the supply chain (control separation units) that can improve informed decisionmaking at the beginning of the supply chain. Practical or social implications ʹ Facility management professionals have an important role to play in the mitigation of global average temperature rise, because of their leading role in procurement, service operations, and materials management. However, they struggle to find sustainable solutions. This paper seeks to inspire professionals with interventions that have proven effectiveness on the reduction of waste. The Material Sample Management Tool is a label generator and database to support creative communities in documenting and sharing material experiments. It was designed around the idea of collaboratively building an archive of alternative design materials with an emphasis on materials that are easily renewable, reusable, (home) compostable within 90 days, locally abundant and make use of local waste streams. The open-source tool, which functions as a collaborative archive as well as label generator to help showcase material experiments, was developed to help any community of creatives (especially students) share them with peers online and offline, and showcase them the physical material wall in their shared workspaces, studios and tool shops.The “Material Sample Management Tool” was developed in 2020-2021 by AUAS computer engineering students Alec Wouda, Sam Overheul, Kostas Mylothridis, Mitchell de Vries and Jarno van der Velde, with wonderful guidance from Okechukwu Onwunli and the teaching team of the Enterprise Web Applications semester course.Entries into the material archive are produced by students in several courses at AUAS.This tool is part of a larger material archiving project funded by NWO by means of a Comenius Teaching Fellowship awarded to senior lecturer and researcher Loes Bogers. In close collaboration with Textile Lab Amsterdam at Waag, a dedicated project team consisting of design educators, researchers and partners at Waag will develop archiving tools for sharing research into sustainable design materials in higher education. The project is inspired by, and a continuation of the Material Archive developed at Waag by Cecilia Raspanti, Maria Viftrup and other (2017-2019). The increasing amount of electronic waste (e-waste) urgently requires the use of innovative solutions within the circular economy models in this industry. Sorting of e-waste in a proper manner are essential for the recovery of valuable materials and minimizing environmental problems. The conventional e-waste sorting models are time-consuming processes, which involve laborious manual classification of complex and diverse electronic components. Moreover, the sector is lacking in skilled labor, thus making automation in sorting procedures is an urgent necessity. The project “AdapSort: Adaptive AI for Sorting E-Waste” aims to develop an adaptable AI-based system for optimal and efficient e-waste sorting. The project combines deep learning object detection algorithms with open-world vision-language models to enable adaptive AI models that incorporate operator feedback as part of a continuous learning process. The project initiates with problem analysis, including use case definition, requirement specification, and collection of labeled image data. AI models will be trained and deployed on edge devices for real-time sorting and scalability. Then, the feasibility of developing adaptive AI models that capture the state-of-the-art open-world vision-language models will be investigated. The human-in-the-loop learning is an important feature of this phase, wherein the user is enabled to provide ongoing feedback about how to refine the model further. An interface will be constructed to enable human intervention to facilitate real-time improvement of classification accuracy and sorting of different items. Finally, the project will deliver a proof of concept for the AI-based sorter, validated through selected use cases in collaboration with industrial partners. By integrating AI with human feedback, this project aims to facilitate e-waste management and serve as a foundation for larger projects.
This PD project aims to gather new knowledge through artistic and participatory design research within neighbourhoods for possible ways of addressing and understanding the avoidance and numbness caused by feelings of vulnerability, discomfort and pain associated with eco-anxiety and chronic fear of environmental doom. The project will include artistic production and suitable forms of fieldwork. The objectives of the PD are to find answers to the practice problem of society which call for art that sensitises, makes aware and helps initiate behavioural change around the consequences of climate change. Rather than visualize future sea levels directly, it will seek to engage with climate change in a metaphorical and poetic way. Neither a doom nor an overly techno-optimistic scenario seem useful to understand the complexity of flood risk management or the dangers of flooding. By challenging both perspectives with artistic means, this research hopes to counter eco-anxiety and create a sense of open thought and susceptibility to new ideas, feelings and chains of thought. Animation and humour, are possible ingredients. The objective is to find and create multiple Dutch water stories, not just one. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop new methods for selecting and repurposing existing impactful stories and strong images. Citizens and students will be included to do so via fieldwork. In addition, archival materials will be used. Archives serve as a repository for memory recollection and reuse, selecting material from the audiovisual archive of the Institute of Sound & Vision will be a crucial part of the creative work which will include two films and accompanying music.
DOK4CT (in Dutch: Digitale Onderwijsmiddelen en Kennisontsluiting for Control Towers)In this project the practical applied knowledge, derived from innovative projects within the “Topsector logistiek”, is made accessible by Breda University and Deltago. This online Control Tower Course is specifically meant for logistic professionals and students in logistic orientated education. The project was made accesible and supported by the NWO, Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. The scope of this project is limited to the area of Cross Chain Control Centers (4C) / Control Towers. The educational valorisation will be executed by the development of digital materials. These are used for student education as well as dissemination towards professionals in the logistics sector. Hereby, the interaction between students and professionals is an important additional benefit under the name of “social learning”. For example the interviews that Marcel Wouterse (Deltago and lecturer at Breda University of Applied Sciences) has created with key partners in the logistics sector were recorded and edited by students. By the use of digital educational tools and serious games, the benefits of Control Towers are now visible for students and professionals. The next phase is to introduce the gained knowledge in future organisations in order to support the Netherlands in the top of the logistics sector.Project goalThe goal of this project is to improve the exploitation of fundamental- and applied knowledge in the expertise area of Cross Chain Control Centers (4C) and Control Towers (CT).The tasks are divided in five subprojects:1.
