This paper considers the partnership model, which is in the author’s view the best answer in the social policy creation in contemporary conditions. The author refers to changes and reforms in the development of welfare state in the world from 1980s onwards. He describes various approaches and models, paying particular attention to the welfare society model, and partnership as its central concept. Dit proefschrift gaat over de veerkracht van regionale arbeidsmarkten en de bijdrage die een triple helix partnership daaraan kan leveren. Het rapporteert over een onderzoek waarin de Health Hub Roden als triple helix partnership centraal staat. Vanuit de opvatting dat dit uiteindelijk bijdraagt aan een sterkere concurrentiepositie van de economie wordt in zowel internationaal, nationaal als regionaal beleid de noodzaak benadrukt om de samenwerking tussen onderwijs, overheid en bedrijfsleven te versterken. Ook in de wetenschappelijke literatuur wordt veel geschreven over triple helix samenwerking. Een belangrijk deel van de triple helix literatuur beargumenteert vanuit de theorie hoe deze partnerships zouden (moeten) werken, maar de vraag hoe dergelijke partnerships in de praktijk werken, bleef tot nu toe onderbelicht in empirisch onderzoek.De aanleiding voor dit onderzoek is gelegen in de unieke kans die zich voordeed om Health Hub Roden, een triple helix partnership in de provincie Drenthe, en de betrokken partners longitudinaal en diepgaand te onderzoeken en zo in de ‘black box’ van een triple helix partnership te kijken om te achterhalen in hoeverre, en via welke mechanismen, een dergelijk partnership bijdraagt aan de economische veerkracht van de regio (in termen van werkgelegenheid en arbeidsparticipatie). Om inzicht te verkrijgen in de manier waarop die bijdrage precies geleverd zou kunnen worden, is op basis van literatuuronderzoek en empirisch onderzoek een globaal ordeningsmodel van mogelijke causale mechanismen ontwikkeld waarmee op microniveau in kaart gebracht kan worden in hoeverre er een bijdrage vanuit het triple helix partnership was. Het begrip causale mechanismen en het traceren daarvan staat centraal in de onderzoeksmethode process-tracing, die binnen dit onderzoek is gebruikt.Na het ontwikkelen van het globale ordeningsmodel is in kaart gebracht in hoeverre er in dit onderzoek bij dit concrete partnership voor de achtereenvolgende schakels waaruit de causale mechanismen zijn opgebouwd ook daadwerkelijk empirisch bewijs gevonden is. Op basis van het empirisch onderzoek kan gesteld worden dat er indicaties gevonden zijn voor een relatie tussen activiteiten vanuit het triple helix partnership en de ontwikkeling van werkgelegenheid en arbeidsparticipatie. Werkervaringsplaatsen voor mensen met een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt hadden een positief effect op de arbeidsparticipatie. Daarnaast resulteerde het netwerk in meer omzet in bestaande markten, met vervolgens een effect op de werkgelegenheid. Samenwerking in projecten droeg bij aan productinnovatie, met (mogelijk op termijn) een werkgelegenheidseffect in bedrijven tot gevolg. Ook werden in het empirisch materiaal aanwijzingen gevonden voor een relatie tussen samenwerking in projecten en de kwantitatieve personeelsvoorziening in bedrijven doordat bedrijven op deze manier hun (innovatie)capaciteit tijdelijk (en gratis) konden uitbreiden of makkelijker nieuw personeel konden werven. Ook werd via samenwerking in projecten gewerkt aan de competenties van personeel. In het ontwikkelde ordeningsmodel werden tot slot mogelijke effecten op procesinnovaties (en vervolgens werkgelegenheid) en ondernemerschap beschreven, maar in deze case werden geen of nauwelijks effect vastgesteld. Met dit onderzoek is inzicht gegeven in mogelijke handelingsopties in triple helix samenwerking en de wijze waarop daarmee een bijdrage geleverd wordt aan werkgelegenheid en arbeidsparticipatie. De belangrijkste adviezen voor het vormgeven van toekomstige samenwerkingen hebben betrekking op de noodzaak van het bepalen van een gezamenlijke lange termijnagenda voor de triple helix samenwerking, het vragen van daadwerkelijk commitment van de betrokken partners, het verbeteren van het inzicht in de collectieve scholingsbehoefte en het stimuleren van informeel leren. Een eerste aanbevelingen voor vervolgonderzoek betreft het toetsen van de beschreven causale mechanismen in vervolgonderzoek. Daarnaast zou een onderzoeksagenda opgesteld kunnen worden waarin relevante onderwerpen het bevorderen van de vraagarticulatie,het bevorderen van samenwerking tussen bedrijven, de rol van docenten en onderzoekers in deze samenwerking, de kwaliteit (en toegevoegde waarde) van dergelijke projecten in vergelijking met de meer traditionele vormen van samenwerking tussen onderwijs en bedrijfsleven en tot slot het stimuleren van open innovatieprojecten.

The role of conveners in initiating and/or leading the formation of cross-sector partnerships (CSPs) has received ample attention in the literature on partnership formation. However, what happens when two organizations jointly take up this role? This question is important in many complex partnerships, such as those on sustainable supply chains. We present a qualitative, longitudinal case study explaining how two organizations together convened the formation of a complex cross-sector partnership, and emphasize the changing roles of each organization individually and their shared relationship over time. We analyze how this process of ‘collective convening’ unfolded, how it impacted the collaboration, and how the conveners coped with the tensions brought about by the constellation of collective convening. These tensions manifested at the interorganizational level in the relationship between the two conveners, but were also fed by each convener’s organizational level dynamics, as these dynamics influenced the collective convening process. A paradox perspective is appropriate to analyze the tensions emerging from the collective convening process and the ensuing organizational response strategies. We contribute to the literature on CSPs by introducing and elaborating on the notion of ‘collective convening’, which reflects a reality in complex CSP formation but has remained largely unstudied in the existing literature on convening. Further, we show how conveners bring their organizational level dynamics to the interorganizational level and how these dynamics influence the CSP formation process in positive and negative ways.

The transition from home to a nursing home can be stressful and traumatic for both older persons and informal caregivers and is often associated with negative outcomes. Additionally, transitional care interventions often lack a comprehensive approach, possibly leading to fragmented care. To avoid this fragmentation and to optimize transitional care, a comprehensive and theory-based model is fundamental. It should include the needs of both older persons and informal caregivers. Therefore, this study, conducted within the European TRANS-SENIOR research consortium, proposes a model to optimize the transition from home to a nursing home, based on the experiences of older persons and informal caregivers. These experiences were captured by conducting a literature review with relevant literature retrieved from the databases CINAHL and PubMed. Studies were included if older persons and/or informal caregivers identified the experiences, needs, barriers, or facilitators during the transition from home to a nursing home. Subsequently, the data extracted from the included studies were mapped to the different stages of transition (pre-transition, mid-transition, and post-transition), creating the TRANSCITmodel. Finally, results were discussed with an expert panel, leading to a final proposed TRANSCIT model. The TRANSCIT model identified that older people and informal caregivers expressed an overall need for partnership during the transition from home to a nursing home. Moreover, it identified 4 key components throughout the transition trajectory (ie, pre-, mid-, and post-transition): (1) support, (2) communication, (3) information, and (4) time. The TRANSCIT model could advise policy makers, practitioners, and researchers on the development and evaluation of (future) transitional care interventions. It can be a guideline reckoning the needs of older people and their informal caregivers, emphasizing the need for a partnership, consequently reducing fragmentation in transitional care and optimizing the transition from home to a nursing home.

Aim: There is often a gap between the ideal of involving older persons iteratively throughout the design process of digital technology, and actual practice. Until now, the lens of ageism has not been applied to address this gap. The goals of this study were: to voice the perspectives and experiences of older persons who participated in co-designing regarding the design process; their perceived role in co-designing and intergenerational interaction with the designers; and apparent manifestations of ageism that potentially influence the design of digital technology. Methods: Twenty-one older persons participated in three focus groups. Five themes were identified using thematic analysis which combined a critical ageism ‘lens’ deductive approach and an inductive approach. Results: Ageism was experienced by participants in their daily lives and interactions with the designers during the design process. Negative images of ageing were pointed out as a potential influencing factor on design decisions. Nevertheless, positive experiences of inclusive design pointed out the importance of “partnership” in the design process. Participants defined the “ultimate partnership” in co-designing as processes in which they were involved from the beginning, iteratively, in a participatory approach. Such processes were perceived as leading to successful design outcomes, which they would like to use, and reduced intergenerational tension. Conclusions: This study highlights the potential role of ageism as a detrimental factor in how digital technologies are designed. Viewing older persons as partners in co-designing and aspiring to more inclusive design processes may promote designing technologies that are needed, wanted and used.

BACKGROUND: Forming partnerships is a prominent strategy used to promote integrated service delivery across health and social service systems. Evidence about the collaboration process upon which partnerships evolve has rarely been addressed in an integrated-care setting. This study explores the longitudinal relationship of the collaboration process and the influence on the final perceived success of a partnership in such a setting. The collaboration process through which partnerships evolve is based on a conceptual framework which identifies five themes: shared ambition, interests and mutual gains, relationship dynamics, organisational dynamics and process management.METHODS: Fifty-nine out of 69 partnerships from a national programme in the Netherlands participated in this survey study. At baseline, 338 steering committee members responded, and they returned 320 questionnaires at follow-up. Multiple-regression-analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between the baseline as well as the change in the collaboration process and the final success of the partnerships.RESULTS: Mutual gains and process management were the most significant baseline predictors for the final success of the partnership. A positive change in the relationship dynamics had a significant effect on the final success of a partnership.CONCLUSIONS: Insight into the collaboration process of integrated primary care partnerships offers a potentially powerful way of predicting their success. Our findings underscore the importance of monitoring the collaboration process during the development of the partnerships in order to achieve their full collaborative advantage.

A.General description on research questions, objectives, and theoretical framework.Research suggests that teachers and parents might be better equipped to tackle school bullying when they collaborate (Axford et al., 2015; Gaffney et al., 2021; Huang et al., 2019). Despite the various efforts to secure family-school partnerships, parents’ involvement in schools’ antibullying interventions remains limited (Gaffney et al., 2021).Motivated to improve their family-school anti-bullying collaboration, three Dutch primary school communities took part in a participatory action research (Brydon‐Miller & Maguire, 2009) project. From 2019-2021, educational professionals and parents worked together supported by researchers, to pinpoint areas for improvement, and develop targeted solutions for their schools. The applied approach was similar to ‘action teams for partnership’ (Epstein, 2018), which has been argued to increase parent engagement to attain schools’ development goals. In this study, we evaluated the project with participating parents, educational professionals, and researchers, to discover how they reflect on the process and its outcomes. Our aim was to find out whether (and how) the participatory action research approach helped school communities to work towards family-school partnership to tackle bullying. B.Methods/methodologySemi-structured interviews were conducted with participating parents (n=3/5), educational professionals (n=7/10) and researchers (n=3/3), through video calls which were recorded and transcribed. Content analysis was conducted to gain insight in participants’ experiences in the collaborative process of conducting research and designing solutions, and the perceived outcomes for themselves and their school.C.Expected outcome/resultsIn this contribution, we critically reflect on our participatory action research approach, aiming to offer some guidance to community members and researchers looking to conduct similar studies. Overall, participants valued the collaborative process, and mentioned beneficial outcomes for themselves and/or their schools. Evaluations of the developed solutions, however, were mixed. Participants’ experiences were mainly related to alignment of interests and goals, group and community building, and exchange and coordination, as well as school- and contextual factors. This article explores cooperation between a commercial supermarket chain and an environmental non-governmental organization linking it to consumer perception of the “The Super Animals” collectable cards promotion initiative. The case study focuses on one particular joint project involving Animal Cards that was initiated by the supermarket Albert Heijn and the World Wide Fund for Nature in The Netherlands. Based on this case, environmental non-governmental organizations’ strategic choices in the context of contesting discourses of sustainability and consumption, as well as implications for environmental education, are addressed. This article combines three strands of the literature – on sustainable consumption, on strategic cooperation between commercial companies and environmental non-governmental organizations and on environmental education. It is argued that the Animal Cards initiative presents an ambiguous case by both attempting to enhance environmental awareness and promoting consumption, opening up questions about the value of such cooperative ventures to the objectives of environmental education. One of the aims of the TALENTS-project is to create (interdisciplinary) learning communities in which engineering professionals, students, teachers, and researchers can learn together and collaborate as equal partners, within the context of authentic challenges, starting from their individual learning goals. To what extent are partners willing to participate in this partnership and under which conditions do they consider it to have added value? We conducted individual interviews with engineering students (N=11), teachers (N=12) and professionals (N=10) about what they require to participate in the learning community, employing epistemic, spatial, instrumental, temporal, and social elements of learning environments. We also inquired which resources participants were willing to invest. Data were summarized on group level in a within-group matrix, following these elements. Next, we employed a cross-group analysis, focusing on commonalities and differences. The most striking results were found in the epistemic, social, and instrumental elements. Respondents have similar needs when it comes to improving dialogue to formulate a challenge. However, professionals prefer to have more influence on formulating this challenge and its output, whereas teachers wish to focus on students’ development. Students wish to co-create with partners and they place importance on matching students with a challenge that aligns with their educational background and personal interest. To create an environment based on equality, students need traditional roles of teachers, clients, and students to be less apparent. Ultimately, almost all respondents are willing to co-operate as equal partners in the learning community because they can see it leads to added value.
