Het onderzoek in het artikel is geïnspireerd door de casus 'platooning' uit de Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge. Er is een PreScan®/Sumulink® model opgesteld met daarin twee auto's. De voorste auto volgt een vastgesteld snelheidsprofiel, de tweede auto volgt de eerste auto waarbij de tweede auto de snelheid van de eerste meet met behulp van een AIR-sensor. De besturing van het gaspedaal in beide auto's vindt plaats met Fuzzy Logic Control in plaats van met een klassieke regelaar. Concluderend mag worden gesteld dat in dit verkennend onderzoek gebleken is dat de Fuzzy Logic Control techniek in principe werkt.

This paper presents a multi-layer scheme to control a formation of three mobile robots. Each layer works as an independent module, dealing with a specific part of the problem of formation control, thus giving to the system more flexibility. In order to reduce formation errors, the proposed architecture includes a layer which performs an adaptive dynamic compensation, using a robust updating law, which compensates for each robot dynamics. The controller is able to guide the robots to the desired formation, including the possibility of time-varying position and/or shape. Stability analysis is performed for the closed-loop system, and the result is that the formation errors are ultimately bounded. Finally, simulation results for a group of three unicycle-like mobile robots are presented, which show that system performance is improved when the adaptive dynamic compensation layer is included in the formation control scheme. © 2009 IEEE.

In 2004 the first adaptive thermal comfort guideline was introduced in the Netherlands. Recently a new, upgraded version of this ISSO 74 (ATG) guideline has been developed. The new requirements are hybrid in nature as the 2014 version of the guideline combines elements of traditional non-adaptive comfort standards with elements of adaptive standards. This paper describes the new guideline and explains the rationale behind it. Also changes in comparison with the original 2004 version and issues related to performance verification are discussed. The information presented in this paper can be used by others (other countries) as inspiration material for other new adaptive comfort guidelines and standards.

ICT in intelligente voertuigen levert innovatieve systemen op. Deze innovatieve systemen richten zich op maatschappelijke knelpunten (verkeersveiligheid, milieubelasting en congestie) en consumenten waarde. Recent wordt meer nadruk gelegd op maatschappelijke knelpunten. Vijf (5) a tien (10) jaar geleden werd de nadruk gelegd op het creëren van consumenten waarde. Deze innovatieve systemen moeten wel geaccepteerd worden door de eindgebruikers. Er is nog maar beperkt onderzoek gedaan naar acceptatie van veiligheidssystemen in intelligente voertuigen. Uit literatuuronderzoek komt naar voren dat verschillende vormen van acceptatie gehanteerd worden. Tevens blijkt dat veel onderzoekers spreken over acceptatie maar de acceptatie niet (kunnen) meten. Om inzicht te krijgen in het gedrag en beleving van bestuurders wordt in dit onderzoek voorgesteld om de evolutie van de cruise control (CC) naar adaptive cruise control (ACC) en naar cooperative adaptive cruise control (C-ACC) te gebruiken om acceptatie te voorspellen en te beoordelen. Er zijn bijzonder veel acceptatiemodellen en theorieën. Deze worden in de praktijk veelvuldig gebruikt binnen de Informatie en Communicatie Technologie (ICT). In deze paper wordt een route uitgezet voor het opzetten van een onderzoek waarbij gebruik gemaakt wordt van het UTAUT-acceptatiemodel. Dit onderzoek moet uitwijzen welke criteria de acceptatie beïnvloeden.

Triggered by recent flood catastrophes and increasing concerns about climate change, scientists as well as policy-makers increasingly call for making long-term water policies to enable a transformation towards flood resilience. A key question is how to make these long-term policies adaptive so that they are able to deal with uncertainties and changing circumstances. The paper proposes three conditions for making long-term water policies adaptive, which are then used to evaluate a new Dutch water policy approach called 'Adaptive Delta Management'. Analysing this national policy approach and its translation to the Rotterdam region reveals that Dutch policy-makers are torn between adaptability and the urge to control. Reflecting on this dilemma, the paper suggests a stronger focus on monitoring and learning to strengthen the adaptability of long-term water policies. Moreover, increasing the adaptive capacity of society also requires a stronger engagement with local stakeholders including citizens and businesses.

Adaptive survey design has attracted great interest in recent years, but the number of case studies describing actual implementation is still thin. Reasons for this may be the gap between survey methodology and data collection, practical complications in differentiating effort across sample units and lack of flexibility of survey case management systems. Currently, adaptive survey design is a standard option in redesigns of person and household surveys at Statistics Netherlands and it has been implemented for the Dutch Health survey in 2018. In this article, the implementation of static adaptive survey designs is described and motivated with a focus on practical feasibility.

This paper investigates how management accounting and control systems (operationalized by using Simons’ (1995a) levers of control framework) can be used as devices to support public value creation and as such it contributes to the literature on public value accounting. Using a mixed methods case study approach, including documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews, we found diverging uses of control systems in the Dutch university of applied sciences we investigated. While belief and interactive control systems are used intensively for strategy change and implementation, diagnostic controls were used mainly at the decentral level and seen as devices to make sure that operational and financial boundaries were not crossed. Therefore, belief and interactive control systems lay the foundation for the implementation of a new strategy, in which concepts of public value play a large role, using diagnostic controls to constrain actions at the operational level. We also found that whereas the institution wanted to have interaction with the external stakeholders, in daily practice this takes place only at the phase of strategy formulation, but not in the phase of intermediate strategy evaluation.

The adaptive approach to thermal comfort has gained unprecedented exposure and rising status recently among the thermal comfort community at the apparent expense of the heat balance approach for the evaluation of naturally ventilated buildings. The main appeal of this adaptive approach lies in its simplicity whereby the comfort temperature is expressed as a function of the outdoor air temperature only. The main responsibility for attaining thermal comfort is given to the individual, who is supposed to have some degree of control over the personal thermal environment. The adjustment of expectation enables a wider comfort temperature range in which occupants feel comfortable. Arguments in favor of the adaptive approach have been based on the results from a large number of field studies conducted across the globe involving the occupants of various types of buildings. It is not surprising, therefore, to watch proliferation of papers on the adaptive approach in the scientific domain and the incorporation of adaptive findings into standards and guidelines. However, there are a number of issues in the advancement of this approach, which have had little exposure in the literature. This paper looks critically at the foundation and underlying assumptions of the adaptive model approach and its findings.

Control methods are applied worldwide to reduce predation on livestock by European red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Lethal methods can inflict suffering; however, moral debate about their use is lacking. Non-lethal methods can also inflict suffering and can unintentionally lead to death, and yet both the welfare consequences and ethical perspectives regarding their use are rarely discussed. The aim of this study was to investigate the animal welfare consequences, the level of humaneness, the ethical considerations and the moral implications of the global use of fox control methods according to Tom Regan’s animal rights view and Peter Singer’s utilitarian view. According to Regan, foxes ought not to be controlled by either lethal or potentially harmful non-lethal methods because this violates the right of foxes not to be harmed or killed. According to Singer, if an action maximises happiness or the satisfaction of preferences over unhappiness or suffering, then the action is justified. Therefore, if and only if the use of fox control methods can prevent suffering and death in livestock in a manner that outweighs comparable suffering and death in foxes is one morally obligated t

An important issue in the field of motion control of wheeled mobile robots is that the design of most controllers is based only on the robot’s kinematics. However, when high-speed movements and/or heavy load transportation are required, it becomes essential to consider the robot dynamics as well. The control signals generated by most dynamic controllers reported in the literature are torques or voltages for the robot motors, while commercial robots usually accept velocity commands. In this context, we present a velocity-based dynamic model for differential drive mobile robots that also includes the dynamics of the robot actuators. Such model has linear and angular velocities as inputs and has been included in Peter Corke’s Robotics Toolbox for MATLAB, therefore it can be easily integrated into simulation systems that have been built for the unicycle kinematics. We demonstrate that the proposed dynamic model has useful mathematical properties. We also present an application of such model on the design of an adaptive dynamic controller and the stability analysis of the complete system, while applying the proposed model properties. Finally, we show some simulation and experimental results and discuss the advantages and limitations of the proposed model.
