Arts in Health, also known as Arts for Health, is an umbrella term used to describe the domain of using the arts to enhance our (mental) health and well-being. It involves a heterogeneous range of professionals who use the arts in various ways, with different goals and outcomes. The practices of these professionals can be placed on a continuum based on the variety of goals and outcomes, ranging from promoting social connection or well-being to treating (mental) health conditions. Recent discussions in the Netherlands have raised questions about the position of creative arts therapists on this continuum. This opinion paper addresses this issue by providing a brief overview of the development of the profession of creative arts therapists, the working areas of creative arts therapists and the growing evidence base of creative arts therapeutic interventions. The practices of creative arts therapists are positioned on the continuum, where the emphasis on and accountability for the clients’ (mental) health increases and evidence-informed use of the arts within a more clearly delineated and legally safeguarded professional framework are present. Knowing where the practices of creative arts therapists are placed can assist in identifying when to choose creative arts therapists, other professionals combining arts and healthcare, or a combination of professionals.

Deze publicatie richt zich vooral op het concept Design Based Research,gezien vanuit het perspectief van de bijna 40 lectoren die de hogeschool rijk is. Dit lectoratenoverzicht kan worden beschouwd als een atlas of reisgids waarmee de lezer een route kan afleggen langs de verschillende lectoraten. De lectoraten die actief zijn op het gebied van de Service Economy worden beschreven in hoofdstuk 2. De lectoraten die actief zijn op het gebied van Vitale Regio worden beschreven in hoofdstuk 3. De lectoraten die actief zijn op het gebied van Smart Sustainable Industries worden beschreven in hoofdstuk 4. De lectoraten die actief zijn op het gebied van de hogeschoolbrede thema’s Design Based Education en Research worden beschreven in hoofdstuk 5. Tenslotte wordt er in hoofdstuk 6 een eerste aanzet gedaan om één of meer verbindende thema’s of werkwijzen te ontdekken in de aanpak van de verschillende lectoraten. Het is niet de bedoeling van deze publicatie om een definitief antwoord te geven op de vraag wat NHL Stenden precies bedoelt met het concept Design Based Research. Het doel van deze publicatie is wel om een indruk te krijgen van wat er allemaal gebeurt binnnen de lectoraten van NHL Stenden, en om nieuwsgierig te worden naar meer.

In this paper, we explore the ways in which we can employ arts-based research methods to unpack and represent the diversity and complexity of journalistic experiences and (self) conceptualisations. We address the need to reconsider the ways in which we theorise and research the field of journalism. We thereby aim to complement the current methodologies, theories, and prisms through which we consider our object of study to depict more comprehensively the diversity of practices in the field. To gather stories about journalism creatively (and ultimately more inclusively and richly), we propose and present the use of arts-based research methods in journalism studies. By employing visual and narrative artistic forms as a research tool, we make room for the senses, emotion and imagination on the part of the respondents, researchers and audiences of the output. We draw on a specific collaboration with artists and journalists that resulted in a research event in which 32 journalists were invited to collaboratively recreate the “richness and complexity” of journalistic practices.

This project challenges traditional cognition-based research methods. While informative, they do not fully capture the complexity of economic transformation. This hinders our ability to support regenerative entrepreneurs in their journey toward a fair and sustainable economy. At AUAS Centre for Economic Transformation, our search for a more integrative approach to building new business models, led us to arts- and nature-based research. We are intrigued by art- and nature-based research as a tool to integrate cognitive, emotional and practical elements (head/ heart/ hands). Our curiosity led us to the following research question: how can innovative methodologies that focus on lessons from the arts (creativity) and nature (diversity) help to enrich the understanding of economic transformation among researchers and entrepreneurs engaged in regenerative practices. This study employs an action-oriented research approach, including progressive learning and reflective monitoring and evaluation. During workshops the researchers and entrepreneurs go outside and collect pieces of nature. With these materials they compose their own work of art. Participants, under guidance, step-by-step, 'engage in dialogue' with their artwork based on their own question, eventually experiencing (a direction to) an answer. This project brings together researchers with expertise in the diverse fields of entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, co-ownership and economic ecosystems and entrepreneurs of regenerative practices. They emerge themselves in innovative research methods aimed at integrating head, heart, and hands to enhance diversity and creativity and enrich their understanding of economic transformation. The presentation will be enriched by the works of Claudy Jongstra, a Dutch artist and regenerative entrepreneur.

An emerging body of research indicates that active arts engagement can enhance older adults’ health and experienced well‐being, but scientific evidence is still fragmented. There is a research gap in understanding arts engagement grounded in a multidimensional conceptualization of the value of health and well‐being from older participants’ perspectives. This Dutch nation‐wide study aimed to explore the broader value of arts engagement on older people’s perceived health and well‐being in 18 participatory arts‐based projects (dance, music, singing, theater, visual arts, video, and spoken word) for community‐dwelling older adults and those living in long term care facilities. In this study, we followed a participatory design with narrative‐ and arts‐based inquiry. We gathered micro‐narratives from older people and their (in)formal caregivers (n = 470). The findings demonstrate that arts engagement, according to participants, resulted in (1) positive feelings, (2) personal and artistic growth, and (3) increased meaningful social interactions. This study concludes that art‐based practices promote older people’s experienced well‐being and increase the quality of life of older people. This study emphasizes the intrinsic value of arts engagement and has implications for research and evaluation of arts engagement.

Evidence based practice, wie kan daar tegen zijn? Toch blijkt evidence based werken in de sociale sector nog niet zo eenvoudig uit te voeren. Mensen op de werkvloer stellen dat weinig methoden werkelijk aantoonbaar effectief zijn, en onderzoekers morren dat er te weinig gebruik wordt gemaakt van hun wetenschappelijke kennis. Ondertussen staat de kwaliteit van de sociale sector steeds opnieuw ter discussie. Dit boek beschrijft de inhoud en relevantie van evidence based practice, maar ook de bijziendheid van die benadering. Er zijn immers behalve wetenschap nog veel meer krachten die de dynamiek op de werkvloer van de sociale sector beïnvloeden. De basis waarop professionals kiezen een bepaalde sociale interventie wel of niet te gebruiken omvat veel meer dan alleen wetenschap. Aan de hand van theoretische beschouwingen en biografieën van sociale interventies verruimen de auteurs de discussie over beroepsinnovatie. Hoe goed is de sociale sector in staat om lessen te trekken uit zijn eigen geschiedenis? Brengt de canon sociaal werk alleen maar voortgang in beeld of ook vooruitgang? En is het mogelijk de kwaliteit van de sector daadwerkelijk te verbeteren door inzichten uit praktijk en wetenschap te gebruiken? Bestemd voor iedereen die bij de sociale sector betrokken is en een eigen mening wil vormen over de discussie over evidence based practice: hulpverleners, managers van welzijnsinstellingen, ambtenaren sociaal beleid bij gemeenten, studenten hoger sociaal agogisch onderwijs en uiteindelijk ook de cliënten die van al deze mensen hulpverlening krijgen.

Fysiotherapie en/of manuele therapie spelen een belangrijke rol in de zorg voor mensen met lage rugpijn. Om de kwaliteit van deze zorg te verbeteren is een richtlijn ontwikkeld die vervolgens geïmplementeerd dient te worden. Technologische innovaties zoals serious games kunnen een rol spelen bij de implementatie van deze richtlijn. In een gerandomiseerde gecontroleerde studie is onderzocht in hoeverre een serious game de implementatie van een richtlijn lage rugpijn bevorderd. Achtenveertig fysiotherapeuten/manueel therapeuten zijn at random toegewezen aan een serious game groep of een groep die voorlichting kreeg over de richtlijn. Uitkomstmaten in deze studie zijn de mate van adherentie aan de richtlijn (vignettentoets), ervaren knelpunten van implementatie, de mening van de deelnemer over de wijze van implementeren, en de mate waarin de richtlijn is gelezen en wordt toegepast in de praktijk naar eigen inschatting van de deelnemer. Na zes weken follow-up is er geen significant effect gevonden van de serious game op de mate van adherentie aan de richtlijn (0,4 punten op 100 puntsschaal; 95% betrouwbaarheidsinterval -4,0 tot 4,8) ten opzichte van de voorlichtingsgroep. Ook voor de andere uitkomsten werden geen statistisch significante effecten gevonden. Het introduceren van een serious game had derhalve geen groter effect op de mate van adherentie aan de richtlijn lage rugpijn dan voorlichting.

Chapter 2 centres on the professorships that are active in the field of Service Economy. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the professorships that are focussed on the field of Vital Region. Chapter 4 describes the professorships operating in the field of Smart Sustainable Industries. Chapter 5 deals with the professorships that are active in the field of the institution-wide themes of Design Based Education and Design Based Research. Lastly, in Chapter 6 we make an attempt to discover one or more connecting themes or procedures in the approach of the various professorships. This publication is not intended to give a definitive answer to the question as to what exactly NHL Stenden means by the concept of Design Based Research. The aim of this publication is to get an idea of everything that is happening in the NHL Stenden professorships and to pique one’s curiosity to find out more.
