This article aims to explore the moral ideas and experiences that students at Dutch universities of applied sciences (UAS) have of being a professional with an ‘ethical compass.’Semi-structured interviews were held with 36 fourth-year Bachelor students divided over four institutions and three different programmes: Initial Teacher Educa- tion, Business Services and Information and Communication Technology. Findings show that students say they strive to be(come) moral professionals, but that they have difficulties recognising and articulating the moral aspects of their professional roles. They seem to lack a moral vocabulary and the moral knowledge to verbalise their aspirations and to provide arguments to explicate or legitimise their moral behaviour. While most students were critical of the support they received from their universities, they indicated that various other role models and (work) experiences did have a strong and positive influence on their moral development. In this article, we reflect on the findings in relation to international empirical research on students’ moral development and highlight the characteristics of UAS students.

This conceptual paper describes the role of research in bachelor programs at Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) . It presents a model for the integration of research activities into student assignments. The model makes it possible to distinguish between different levels of research. The model can be helpful in designing research education for professional bachelor students and developing practice-based assignments to assess research competences.

Internationalizing curricula. Needs and wishes of alumni and employers with regard to international competencies. Internationalization has become of great importance for universities acrossthe globe. The labour market is becoming international, with internationalopportunities and international competition. Emerging markets such as India, China and Russia are gaining economic power. Global challenges demand world-wide solutions. Production and marketing networks span the globe and various forms of migration have resulted in a large cultural diversity within nations. As a result, societies and labour markets are changing as well. In order to deal with these societal changes adequately and to succeed in today’s labour market, graduates need to be equipped with international competencies. In a survey among 500 chief executives, ICM Research (on behalf of Think Global and The British Council, 2011) showed that employers strongly value staff members who are able to work in an international and multicultural environment. Similar results were found in Diamond et al. (2011), in which ‘multicultural teamwork’ was considered most important. The Hague University of Applied Sciences seeks to prepare its students adequately for the world of tomorrow. The University’s development plans (e.g. HogeschoolOntwikkelingsPlan, HOP 7, 2009-2013 and HOP 8, 2014-2017) indicate that its vision is to train students to be globally-minded professionals with an international and multicultural perspective, who are world-citizens, interested in global issues and able to deal with diversity in a constructive manner. They are to be professionals, who possess the competencies to function well in an international and intercultural environment. Internationalization is therefore high on the agenda of The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) which is illustrated by the fact that, as of 2014, new students in all academies have to fill 12.5% (30 ECTS) of their four-year Bachelor program with international activities. These activities can range from an internship or semester abroad (student mobility) to participating in full programs of study or minors in which English is the medium of instruction, or an internationally themed minor (Internationalization at Home, IaH). And this is only the beginning. Internationalization is a means, not an end. All THUAS courses are looking into ways in which they can internationalize their curriculum. And in doing so, they need to be innovative (Leask, 2009) and keep in mind the specific needs and wishes of alumni and their employers with regard to international competences. The THUAS research group International Cooperation supports these internationalization policy objectives by investigating various aspects, such as: • The acquisition and development of international competencies among students. • The extent to which lecturers possess international competencies and what their needs and wishes are for further development. • The international competencies THUAS graduates have acquired as part of their degree and how THUAS has stimulated this development. • The international competencies that employers and alumni consider important. Although international competencies and employability have received growing attention in internationalization research, existing studies have mainly focused on: • The effects of study abroad on the development of international competence (cf. Hoven & Walenkamp, 2013). • The effects of an experience abroad (study, internship, voluntary work) on employability. • A more general analysis of the skills employers look for in prospective employees.

Internationale studenten zijn van belang voor hogeronderwijsinstellingen, internationale klaslokalen en de Nederlandse economie. Maar internationale studenten worden vaak geconfronteerd met diverse praktische moeilijkheden en het wennen aan een nieuwe omgeving. Ook blijkt uit de jaarlijkse Studentenwelzijnsmonitor van Inholland dat internationale studenten gemiddeld een lager gevoel van sense of belonging hebben dan Nederlandse studenten. Voor studenten is sense of belonging belangrijk omdat het positief verband houdt met studiesucces, studievoortgang en negatief verband houdt met studieuitval. Sense of belonging gaat over het diepgaande emotionele gevoel van verbondenheid, thuis voelen en jezelf kunnen zijn. Dit zijn universele basisbehoeften van de mens die bij vervulling een positief effect hebben op iemands mentale en fysieke welzijn. Uit intern onderzoek blijkt dat de sense of belonging onder de internationale studenten laag is en correleert met het welzijn en de betrokkenheid van de studenten. International Office van Inholland heeft behoefte aan meer informatie over waarom de sense of belonging van de internationale studenten laag is en wat zij eraan kunnen doen om dit te verbeteren. In deze studie is gekeken naar de behoeften, ervaringen en opbrengsten die hebben bijgedragen aan de sense of belonging van internationale studenten en wat Inholland hierin kan betekenen. Er zijn 21 kwalitatieve interviews gehouden met internationale studenten van verschillende opleidingen en Inholland-locaties. Er is gebruik gemaakt van een semigestructureerde interviewguide.

Over the past three years we have built a practice-oriented, bachelor level, educational programme for software engineers to specialize as AI engineers. The experience with this programme and the practical assignments our students execute in industry has given us valuable insights on the profession of AI engineer. In this paper we discuss our programme and the lessons learned for industry and research.

In this project we take a look at the laws and regulations surrounding data collection using sensors in assistive technology and the literature on concerns of people about this technology. We also look into the Smart Teddy device and how it operates. Abstract The emergence of new technologies such as mp3 and music streaming, and the accompanying digital transformation of the music industry, have led to the shift and change of the entire music industry’s value chain. While music is increasingly being consumed through digital channels, the number of empirical studies, particularly in the field of music copyright in the digital music industry, is limited. Every year, rightsholders of musical works, valued 2.5 billion dollars, remain unknown. The objectives of this study are twofold: First to understand and describe the structure and process of the Dutch music copyright system including the most relevant actors within the system and their relations. Second to apply evolutionary economics approach and Values Sensitive Design method within the context of music copyright through positive-empirical perspective. For studies of technological change in existing markets, the evolutionary economics literature provides a coherent and evidence-based foundation. The actors are generally perceived as being different, for example with regard to their access to information, their ability to handle information, their capital and knowledge base (asymmetric information). Also their norms, values and roles can differ. Based on an analysis of documents and held expert interviews, we find that the collection and distribution of the music copyright money is still based on obsolete laws, neoclassical paradigm and legacy IT-system. Finally, we conclude that the rightsholders are heterogenous and have asymmetrical information and negotiating power. The outcomes of this study contribute to create a better understanding of impact of digitization of music copyright industry and empower the stakeholders to proceed from a more informed perspective on redesigning and applying the future music copyright system and pre-digital norms and values amongst actors.
