This paper seeks to make a contribution to business model experimentation for sustainability by putting forward a relatively simple tool. This tool calculates the financial and sustainability impact based on the SDG’s of a newly proposed business model (BM). BM experimentation is described by Bocken et al. (2019) as an iterative-multi-actor experimentation process. At the final experimentation phases some form of sustainability measurement will be necessary in order to validate if the new proposed business model will be achieving the aims set in the project. Despite the plethora of tools, research indicates that tools that fit needs and expectations are scarce, lack the specific focus on sustainable BM innovation, or may be too complex and demanding in terms of time commitment (Bocken, Strupeit, Whalen, & Nußholz, 2019a). In this abstract we address this gap, or current inability of calculating the financial and sustainability effect of a proposed sustainable BM in an integrated, time effective manner. By offering a practical tool that allows for this calculation, we aim to answer the research question; “How can the expected financial and sustainability impact of BMs be forecasted within the framework of BM experimentation?

High-tech horticulture production methods (such as vertical farming, hydroponics and other related technology possibilities), combined with evolving market side possibilities (consumer’s willingness to pay for variety, food safety and security), are opening new ways to create and deliver value. In this paper we present four emerging business models and attempt to understand the conditions under which each business model is able to create positive market value and sustained business advantage. The first of these four models is the case of a vertically integrated production to retail operation. The second model is the case of a production model with assured retail/distribution side commitment. The third model deals with a marketing/branding driven production model with differentiated market positioning. Finally, the forth is a production model with direct delivery to the end-consumer based upon the leveraging of wide spread digital technology in the consumer market. To demonstrate these four business models, we analyze practical case studies and analyze their market approach and impact. Using this analysis, we create a framework that enables entrepreneurs and businesses to adopt a business model that matches their capabilities with market opportunities.

The Kuyichi teaching case will challenge students to think about how circular business models can contribute to sustainability and dives into the challenges of setting up a resale business model in the context of sustainable fashion. The case provides an engaging real-world example to aid students in their learning journey and is accompanied by an extensive teaching note (including supplementary material). The case is part of the educational output from the CIE - CONESU project, funded by taskforce for Applied Research SIA.

During the timespan of the implementation of a system, the why and what against the actual state of the system can change. This difference is referred to as the design problem. Currently, no design problems are identified in Business Rules Management (BRM) and Business Rules Management System (BRMS) literature. To solve problems with a BRMS implementation it is important that the problems solved by this implementation are known, which is not the case. A case study approach is utilized containing two phases of data collection. Phase one consisted of multiple expert interviews focused on creating a set of design problems utilizing existing literature on BRMS design problems. Then, in phase two, the set of design problems were proposed to a selection of thirteen organizations, which indicated if the design problems occurred in a BRMS implementation. This resulted in a set of 24 design problems. The identification of design problems contributes to future research in evaluating BRMS’s. Furthermore, the identification of design problems is a contribution towards situational artifact construction in the field of BRM.

Decisions are used by organizations to manage and execute their coordinated, value-adding decision-making and are thereby among an organization’s most important assets. To be able to manage deci-sions and underlying business rules, Decision Management (DM) and Business Rules Management (BRM) are increasingly being applied at organisations. One of the latest developments related to the domain of DM and BRM is the introduction of the Decision Model and Notation (DMN) in September 2015 by the Object Management Group (OMG). The goal of this technical paper is to provide students with a case to practice the specification, verification, validation, deployment, execution, monitoring and governance of business rules in practice.

This paper explores the integration of indicators that reflect the concepts of sustainability into business cases and business case evaluation methods. It is based on the observations that sustainability is one of the most important challenges of our time and that sustainable development requires change of the way we use resources, produce products, share our wealth, and so on. And as change is inescapably related to innovation and projects, sustainable development is related to projects. Business cases of projects should therefore reflect this relationship and include criteria for the assessment of sustainability aspects. Based on an identification of business case evaluation methods, and an overview of frameworks for sustainability indicators, an analysis is made of the inclusion of the indicators and principles of sustainability in business cases and business case evaluation methods. The analysis will conclude that the integration sustainability considerations into business cases of projects, is more than a set of additional criteria to be considered. Integration of sustainability considerations suggests a more holistic and elaborated perspective on business case evaluation than the Return on Investment question, that is dominating business cases and business case evaluation today.

The main question in this PhD thesis is: How can Business Rules Management be configured and valued in organizations? A BRM problem space framework is proposed, existing of service systems, as a solution to the BRM problems. In total 94 vendor documents and approximately 32 hours of semi-structured interviews were analyzed. This analysis revealed nine individual service systems, in casu elicitation, design, verification, validation, deployment, execution, monitor, audit, and version. In the second part of this dissertation, BRM is positioned in relation to BPM (Business Process Management) by means of a literature study. An extension study was conducted: a qualitative study on a list of business rules formulated by a consulting organization based on the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission risk framework. A stream of literature is emerging where network development and business modeling intersect. Various authors emphasize that networks influence business models. This paper extends this stream of literature by studying two cases in which we analyze how business modeling and networking interact over time. We propose the concept ‘value shaping’ to describe this interaction. Value shaping refers to the mutually constitutive process in which on the one hand networking helps to refine and improve the overall business model and on the other hand an improved business model spurs expansion of the network. We identify five micro-level processes through which value shaping occurs. Value shaping is particularly relevant for sustainability-oriented innovations, to help clarify all the types of financial, social and environmental value to which a business model may contribute.

‘Delta Dreamers’ is een project dat is mogelijk gemaakt vanuit de Regiodeal- thema aansluiting onderwijs-arbeidsmarkt - en waarin de eilanden Goeree-Overflakkee, Hoeksche Waard en Voorne-Putten samenwerken. Doel van het onderzoek is om bedrijven in de Zuid-Hollandse Delta te adviseren hoe zij hun bedrijf toekomstbestendig kunnen neerzetten als het aankomt op het aantrekken en behouden van jong talent. In het samenwerkingsverband hebben elf bedrijven zich aangesloten bij dit project. Naast deze bedrijven zijn drie onderzoekers van Hogeschool Inholland, acht Inholland studenten, de begeleidende docenten en vertegenwoordigers van de vier gemeentes betrokken. In het kader van het afstuderen verrichtten vier studentenduo’s (telkens een student Business Studies en een student HBO-Rechten) onderzoek naar beroepsbeelden van kraptefuncties bij zeven bedrijven; deze bedrijven hebben ieder een passend bedrijfsadvies ontvangen. De resultaten geven inzicht in hoe bedrijven realistische en up-to-date beelden naar buiten kunnen brengen in o.a. wervingsprocedures en hoe deze bedrijven de kans kunnen vergroten dat jongeren in de Zuid-Hollandse Delta blijven wonen en werken.
