Background: Outcome assessment is essential to understand the impact and recovery of burns of the hand and tailor treatment. There is however, a large variety of measures and outcome assessment is often incomplete. The aim was therefore to initiate a set of outcome assessments for use in a clinical setting. Method: A concept set was drafted, based on the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, which distinguished two phases, three patient states and included both patient reported and clinical outcomes. Subsequently, potential assessments were allocated to the various outcomes. This concept was discussed during the European Burns Association congress in 2013 and revised. The revision was sent to 65 colleagues from 28 institutions, accompanied by a survey. Results: Eleven surveys were returned from 16 persons representing 9 institutions from 6 countries. Based on the feedback, final revisions were made. Points raised were time investment and translations of not all assessments already available. Conclusions: With multidisciplinary and international input, a multidimensional set of outcome assessments for burns of the hand has been established, covering almost all domains of functioning. This first step towards more uniform clinical evaluation, will contribute to knowledge on outcome and effectiveness of treatment of hand burns.

Abstract Aims The involvement of an inter-professional healthcare student team in the review of medications used by geriatric patients could not only provide patients with optimized therapy but also provide students with a valuable inter-professional learning experience. We describe and evaluate the clinical and learning outcomes of an inter-professional student-run mediation review program (ISP). Subject and method A variable team consisting of students in medicine, pharmacy, master advanced nursing practice, and master physician assistant reviewed the medication lists of patients attending a specialized geriatric outpatient clinic. Results During 32 outpatient visits, 188 medications were reviewed. The students identified 14 medication-related problems, of which 4 were not recognized by healthcare professionals. The ISP team advised 95 medication changes, of which 68 (71.6%) were directly implemented. Students evaluated this pilot program positively and considered it educational (median score 4 out of 5) and thought it would contribute to their future inter-professional relationships. Conclusion An inter-professional team of healthcare students is an innovative healthcare improvement for (academic) hospitals to increase medication safety. Most formulated advices were directly incorporated in daily practice and could prevent future medication-related harm. The ISP also offers students a first opportunity to work in an inter-professional manner and get insight into the perspectives and qualities of their future colleagues.

Background: The use of patient-reported outcomes to improve burn care increases. Little is known on burn patients’ views on what outcomes are most important, and about preferences regarding online Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). Therefore, this study assessed what outcomes matter most to patients, and gained insights into patient preferences towards the use of online PROMs. Methods: Adult patients (≥18 years old), 3–36 months after injury completed a survey measuring importance of outcomes, separately for three time periods: during admission, short-term (< 6 months) and long-term (6–24 months) after burn injury. Both open and closed-ended questions were used. Furthermore, preferences regarding the use of patient-reported outcome measures in burn care were queried. Results: A total of 140 patients were included (response rate: 27%). ‘Not having pain’ and ‘good wound healing’ were identified as very important outcomes. Also, ‘physical functioning at pre-injury level’, ‘being independent’ and ‘taking care of yourself’ were considered very important outcomes. The top-ten of most important outcomes largely overlapped in all three time periods. Most patients (84%) had no problems with online questionnaires, and many (67%) indicated that it should take up to 15 minutes. Patients’ opinions differed widely on the preferred frequency of follow-up. Conclusions: Not having pain and good wound healing were considered very important during the whole recovery of burns; in addition, physical functioning at pre-injury level, being independent, and taking care of yourself were deemed very important in the short and long-term. These outcomes are recommended to be used in burn care and research, although careful selection of outcomes remains crucial as patients prefer online questionnaires up to 15 minutes.

Inside Out is an innovative research project that translates cutting-edge microbiome science into immersive, multisensory experiences aimed at long-term behavioral and mental health transformation. Combining extended reality (XR), speculative gastronomy, and narrative therapy, the project enables participants to explore their inner microbiome landscape through taste, smell, touch, and interactive storytelling. This pioneering methodology connects gut-brain science with emotional and sensory engagement. Participants experience their bodies from the inside out, cultivating a visceral understanding of the symbiotic microbial worlds within us. The project includes AI-generated "drinkable memories," microbiome-inspired food designs, haptic-olfactory VR environments, and robotic interactions that choreograph the body as terrain. Developed in collaboration with designers from Polymorf, producer Studio Biarritz, psychiatrist-researcher Anja Lok, and microbiome scientists from Amsterdam UMC and the Amsterdam Microbiome Expertise Center, Inside Out bridges scientific rigor with artistic expression. The project seeks to: • Increase embodied understanding of the microbiome’s role in health and well-being • Shift public perception from hygiene-based fear to ecological thinking • Inspire behavioral change related to food, gut health, and mental resilience The outcomes are designed to reach a large audience and implementation in science museums, art-science festivals, and educational programs, with a view toward future clinical applications in preventive healthcare and mental well-being. By making the invisible microbiome tangible, Inside Out aims not only to inform, but to transform—redefining how we relate to the ecosystems within us.

Their treatment is informed by a variety of outcome measures. At present, diagnosis, monitoring of progress and evaluation are often based on performance-based and clinician-reported outcomes such as results of standardized speech, language, voice, or communication tests. These tests typically aim to capture how well the person can produce or understand language in a controlled situation, and therefore only provide limited insight in the person’s challenges in life. Performance measures do not incorporate the unobservable feelings such as a patient's effort, social embarrassment, difficulty, or confidence in communication. Nor do they address language and communication difficulties experienced by the person themselves, the impact on daily life or allow patients to set goals related to their own needs and wishes. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the ability of micro-organisms to resist antibiotics, is associated with ~4.9 million deaths globally, reported in 2022. In the EU alone, more than 35.000 people die from antimicrobial-resistant infections annually, resulting in loss of life as well as €1.5Bn/year in healthcare costs and productivity losses. Rapid diagnostics tests are needed, current testing takes between 24 hours to a few days (for slow growing microorganisms), delaying patient treatment and severely impacting treatment outcomes. SoundCell BV have developed a technique (TRL5), for real-time detection of bacteria's viability in the presence of antibiotics. Nano-mechanical vibration of an ultrathin graphene sheet correlates to viability of bacteria immobilized on this sheet. Bacterial motion is transferred to this sheet, and movement of this sheet is tracked via a high-speed laser. Living bacteria produce a strong signal, which diminishes when antibiotics kill them. Unaffected by growth rates, results are achieved in one hour with this technique. This technology opens up possibility for rapid diagnostics of antibiotic resistance in patients with infections of slow growing pathogens (such as mycobacteria and yeast). In such cases the time to result is slowest, significantly delaying effective patient treatment. We aim to validate this technique in our clinical microbiology laboratory.
