Objective. The objective of this article is to analyze the scientific production on creative tourism indexed in the Scopus database and to identify gaps, trends and future lines of research. Method. The bibliometric method was used to map the state of the art and identify trends, gaps and future lines of research. A search was made in the Scopus database for scientific articles that included the terms creative tourism in the title, abstract or keywords. Bibexcel software was used to calculate productivity indicators and h-index. The VOSviewer software allowed the analysis of bibilometric networks of citation, co-citation and co-occurrence of keywords. Results. A total of 120 articles corresponding to the period 2002-2020 were found. The scientific production on creative tourism is growing and presents a high rate of topicality. Greg Richards was the most prolix author with the highest h-index, which confirms him as a reference in the subject. The most productive journals are Current Issues in Tourism and Annals of Tourism Research. Creative tourism has been studied from three fundamental thematic lines: tourism and creativity, creative experience and creative space. Conclusions. The implications of the results of the study for academics, researchers and tourism managers were presented. Studies on the profile of the creative tourist, the role of new technologies, co-creation of experiences, as well as the inclusion of variables such as repetition intention, image, motivation and the role of the community in creative tourism were proposed as research opportunities.
This chapter explains the role of authenticity in creative tourism in rural areas and identifies future research needs. Community-based tourism and creative tourism both use the concept of authenticity extensively, but uncritically. To develop creative tourism in rural areas and prevent commodification, the theoretical assumptions and definitions behind authenticity must be considered. The study analyses how different theories of authenticity are applied in creative and community-based tourism literature and suggests a synthetic theory of authenticity applicable to creative tourism development in rural areas. This theory was explored in the context of five Balinese villages using a microethnographic approach with participant observation and expert as well as tourist interviews. Findings extend the discussion in the literature and provide further evidence that the synthesized definition of authenticity is reasonable for creative tourism in rural areas. This definition of authenticity may develop differently in other cultural contexts. More research is also needed to classify expectations of authenticity among different types of creative tourists. Finally, as tourism influences how authenticity changes over time, future research on the carrying capacity of rural areas is essential for the development of creative tourism in rural areas.

Purpose: The authors provide a personal insight into how they see the potential of urban culture as a vehicle for creative placemaking. The purpose of this study is to highlight the opportunities for the tourism industry to embrace this global youth culture now that one of its pillars, breakdance, is on the brink of becoming an Olympic discipline in 2024, thus nudging this youth culture from underground to mainstream. Design/methodology/approach: The authors interviewed two Dutch pioneers in the field of urban culture: Tyrone van der Meer, founder of The Notorious IBE (IBE), an international breaking event, and Angelo Martinus, founder of the urban scene in Eindhoven and initiator of EMOVES, an urban culture and sports event. Findings: The authors illustrate the added value of urban culture to creative placemaking by addressing the initiatives of previously mentioned Dutch pioneers. Their urban culture events on Dutch soil, yearly attract thousands of participants and visitors from the urban scene, covering over 40 nationalities, to the South of The Netherlands. Originality/value: This study provides a glimpse into a global youth culture that is primarily invisible to the tourism industry and a foresight in how the tourism industry and other stakeholders (e.g. policy makers, city marketeers, tourism managers and event organisers) can pick up on this evolving trend. The study is meant as a wake-up call.

The Academy for Leisure & Events has always been one of the frontrunners when it comes to the development, design and implementation of cultural tourism and creative industry business models as well as lifelong learning programmes.These programmes are attended by a variety of leisure and tourism professionals, including public authorities in leisure, culture and nature fields.The CULTURWB project addresses the need for strengthening the development of the cultural tourism industry.The experts from BUas together with the other project partners have utilised diverse research methodologies (marketing and branding, strategy business planning, digital tourism, sustainable development, strategy and action plan implementation, etc.) to develop and pilot a toolkit for Lifelong Learning courses in the field of cultural tourism and heritage.
