This article is a comment on the article “Decoupling Responsible Management Education” (Journal of Management Inquiry) by Andreas Rasche and Dirk Ulrich Gilbert. Based on a survey conducted in 2014 among Dutch MBA program managers from academic universities and universities of professional education and public and private institutions, it gives some additional color to their article by shedding some initial empirical light on the propositions. The findings allow for speculating on business school behavior in the context of engaging in the responsible management education (RME) agenda and identify several avenues for further empirical research and theoretical conceptualization. Although the larger part of this constructively intended comment focuses on RME and business schools, it also addresses aspects of decoupling more generally.

To realize a more sustainable city logistics system the focus should go beyond reducing emissions only. Next to zero emission vehicles, reduction of urban logistics trips is required in light of several urban, environmental and economic challenges. This contribution focuses on the role of hubs and decoupling points, where logistics flows to and from a city are decoupled from the flows in a city, to optimize the city logistics. For six distinctive hubs or decoupling point concepts, we examine the potential under current market and legal conditions. By decomposing city logistics in subsegments and urban logistics trip structures, we estimate the realistic trip reduction potential of decouple points in the current city logistics conditions.

The authors consider the reality that endless economic growth on a finite planet is unsustainable, especially if society has exceeded ecological limits. The paper examines various aspects of society's endless growth predicament. It reviews the idea that there are 'limits to growth'; it then considers the 'endless growth mantra' within society. The paper then considers the 'decoupling' strategy and its merits, and argues that it is, at best, a partial solution to the problem. The key social problem of denial of our predicament is considered, along with the contribution of anthropocentric modernism as a worldview that aids and abets that denial. Modern manufacturing has to deal with global competition, in which customers have high purchasing power. Production efficiency and rapid response to customer demand are dominant conditions for enterprises to stay successful. Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMSs) are designed to have a modular architecture in both mechanical design and control system. The architecture enables change of the machine structure quickly, by adding and removing parts of the system, and by changing the corresponding software programming. It can handle short times to market. This paper presents an ‘Index-Method’ to monitor the reconfiguration of RMS. The method is able to categorise the reconfiguration and related development in seven stages. It focusses specifically on the Independence Axiom. The main goal is to find all relevant parameters to cause interactions, and to decouple them. The solution, aiming to be scientifically vigorous and practically applicable, was applied to a true case; the development of a manufacturing system for an inkjet print head for industrial applications. The realisation of the system required the development of new process technology. The index-method may be considered successful. It has the ability to structure the configuration process of RMSs. The method harmonises well with the industry known V-model.

This article will discuss philosophical debates on economic growth and environmental sustainability, the role of management responsibility, and the risk of subversion to business as usual. This discussion will be framed using the concepts of Cradle to Cradle (C2C) and Circular Economy about sustainable production. The case study illustrating the danger of subversion of these progressive models discussed here is based on the assignments submitted by Masters students as part of a course related to sustainable production and consumption at Leiden University. The evaluation of the supposedly best practice cases placed on the website of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation or those awarded Cradle to Cradle certificate has led some students to conclude that these cases illustrated green-washing. Companies in the Brainport region are often characterized as high mix low volume (HMLV) production environments. These companies are distinguished by a wide range of possible products (high product variety), which are produced in low volumes. These are often customer-specific products that are produced once or incidentally. Traditionally, these companies focus on efficient use of resources, where utilisation rate and cost coverage are relevant. The increasing customer demand in the region leads to pressure on production capacity. An initial intuitive response from these companies is to further increase the utilisation rate of machines. To keep costs manageable, the company tries to avoid investing in additional capacity. An undesirable side effect is increasing pressure on timeliness (delivery, such as lead times, delivery reliability, flexibility) and quality. The apparent contradiction between costs and timeliness in these HMLV production environments is a recurring issue in practice-oriented research conducted by Fontys Industrial Engineering and Management students. This results in the following research question: Which sub-aspects may be relevant to the performance regarding Quality, Delivery, and Cost (QDC) of an HMLV production environment?

Een circulair bedrijfsmodel vraagt veelal om een andere financieringsconstructie. Zo hebben producten die worden hergebruikt of op hoogwaardige wijze worden gerecycled altijd een financiële restwaarde. Deze dient inzichtelijk te zijn en afgestemd te worden met de verschillende ketenpartners en met financiers. De financieringsbehoefte van een onderneming verandert ook als een bedrijf ervoor kiest om producten niet te verkopen, maar via een overeenkomst beschikbaar te stellen aan gebruikers. Dit onderzoek richt zich op de volgende praktijkvragen: 1. Hoe kunnen we de financiële (rest)waardes van onze producten bepalen en verbinden aan zakelijke afspraken over hergebruik en recycling? 2. Hoe kunnen we financiële contracten opstellen met ketenpartners waardoor gebruikers worden gefaciliteerd en gestimuleerd om producten opnieuw te gebruiken en te recyclen? 3. Hoe kunnen we financiering aantrekken en wat betekent dit voor onze onderneming en samenwerking binnen de logistieke keten? In september 2017 is een groep van onderzoekers van de hogescholen Windesheim en NHL Stenden in samenwerking met de Universiteit van Aruba en Circle Economy begonnen aan dit grootschalige onderzoeksproject. Het onderzoeksproject is een vorm van co-creatie waarbij er geleerd wordt van en met bedrijven. Dit onderzoeksrapport doet verslag van de dataverzameling, interpretatie en aanbevelingen. We beginnen met een inleiding vanuit de theoretische rationale, leidende tot de onderzoeksvragen. Hoofdstuk twee beschrijft de bestaande kennis binnen het domein vanuit de literatuur. Aansluitend is hoofdstuk drie gewijd aan de methodologie. De bevindingen zijn te lezen in hoofdstuk vier en worden besproken in hoofdstuk vijf. Het afsluitende hoofdstuk trekt conclusies en stelt aanbevelingen.

From the article: The ‘Axiomatic Design Methodology’ uses ‘Axioms’ that cannot be proven nor derived from physical phenomena. The axioms serve as guidelines for the design process of products and systems. The latest contribution was the addition of the ‘Complexity Axiom’ in 1999. However, the underlying theory of complexity did not get much traction by designers and their managers yet. It emphasises difficulties in the design, not primarily focussing on solutions. The ‘Theory of Complexity’ is converted to a ‘Theory of Maturity’ in this paper. It is supported with a graphical way to plot maturity as it develops. It visualises the results in a way that can be understood by all entities in a company, engineers, managers, and executives. Understanding the maturity of a system enables selection of the right measures to control it. Visualisation enables communication between the interacting parties. If successful development trajectories are understood, eventually from earlier experience, even better corrective actions can be applied. The method appears an affirmative way to graphically represent progression in design, thus presenting advances in a positive context. Though positively presented, it is not the case that the method hides problems; presumed and legitimate project progression can be quite different, which challenges the designer to understand the process. In this way, the method sends out a continuous warning to stay critical on design choices made.

Closed loop or ‘circular’ production systems known as Circular Economy and Cradle to Cradle represent a unique opportunity to radically revise the currently wasteful system of production. One of the challenges of such systems is that circular products need to be both produced locally with minimum environmental footprint and simultaneously satisfy demand of global consumers. This article presents a literature review that describes the application of circular methodologies to education for sustainability, which has been slow to adopt circular systems to the curriculum. This article discusses how Bachelor and Master-level students apply their understanding of these frameworks to corporate case studies. Two assignment-related case studies are summarized, both of which analyze products that claim to be 'circular'. The students' research shows that the first case, which describes the impact of a hybrid material soda bottle, does not meet circularity criteria. The second case study, which describes products and applications of a mushroom-based material, is more sustainable. However, the students' research shows that the manufacturers have omitted transport from the environmental impact assessment and therefore the mushroom materials may not be as sustainable as the manufacturers claim. As these particular examples showed students how green advertising can be misleading, applying “ideal” circularity principles as part of experiential learning could strengthen the curriculum.
