De training Digital Storytelling en opleiding tot trainer Digital Storytelling worden door het lectoraat Vernieuwende Opleidingsmethodiek en -didactiek van de Faculteit Educatie van de Hogeschool Utrecht samen met de Faculteit Maatschappij en Recht van de Hogeschool Utrecht uitgewerkt tot een multimediale methode voor pedagogen, docenten, coaches, opleiders, leraren en social workers.

Bij het werken met een leerlandschap formuleert een student voor zichzelf - in samenspraak met zijn leerteam - leervragen en leeractiviteiten. Hij doet steeds (pedagogisch) onderzoek in de dagelijkse werkelijkheid van de school. Bij het doen van (pedagogisch) onderzoek kan Digital Storytelling een rol spelen. Een hulpmiddel dat gericht is op het ondersteunen van het complexe proces van observeren, interpreteren, concluderen, documenteren, rapporteren en betekenisgeving. Met het inzetten van multimedia komt bovendien aan de orde: het aantrekkelijke karakter van het werken met deze multimedia. Die aantrekkelijkheid betreft zowel het plezier dat aan het werken met media valt te beleven als de voldoening bij het beantwoorden van een beeldende leervraag.

Ons lectoraat 'Vernieuwende Opleidingsmethodiek en -didactiek' werkt samen met de FSAO om Digital Storytelling te maken tot een multimediale methode voor pedagogen, docenten, coaches, opleiders, leraren en social workers, ter ondersteuning van het digitale portfolio. Het College van Bestuur van de Hogeschool van Utrecht heeft afgelopen zomer besloten subsidie toe te kennen aan Digital Storytelling.

In view of the 75th commemoration of the liberation of World War II, Visit Brabant asked BUas to connect the main heritage locations in the province through storytelling in order to attract more visitors.In 2015, we developed a narrative concept entitled “Crossroads. Life changing stories 40-45”. In 2016, we developed a brand guide which explains storytelling guidelines. In collaboration with Brabant Heritage and Brabant Remembers, in 2017-208, 15 meetings were organized all over the province to collect personal WWII narratives. From over 600 narratives, together with a group of historians, we selected 75 narratives. Under our guidance, these 75 narratives have been rewritten into Crossroads stories by some 20 different authors. Brabant Remembers has launched a marketing campaign and (digital and physical) experiences based on these stories. The aim is to touch visitors and local people emotionally with personal stories from the past, and to offer new ways of interacting with these stories, especially for young people.WhenThe project has been running since 2015. In this project, we explore how healthcare providers and the creative industry can collaborate to develop effective digital mental health interventions, particularly for survivors of sexual assault. Sexual assault victims face significant barriers to seeking professional help, including shame, self-blame, and fear of judgment. With over 100,000 cases reported annually in the Netherlands the need for accessible, stigma-free support is urgent. Digital interventions, such as chatbots, offer a promising solution by providing a safe, confidential, and cost-effective space for victims to share their experiences before seeking professional care. However, existing commercial AI chatbots remain unsuitable for complex mental health support. While widely used for general health inquiries and basic therapy, they lack the human qualities essential for empathetic conversations. Additionally, training AI for this sensitive context is challenging due to limited caregiver-patient conversation data. A key concern raised by professionals worldwide is the risk of AI-driven chatbots being misused as therapy substitutes. Without proper safeguards, they may offer inappropriate responses, potentially harming users. This highlights the urgent need for strict design guidelines, robust safety measures, and comprehensive oversight in AI-based mental health solutions. To address these challenges, this project brings together experts from healthcare and design fields—especially conversation designers—to explore the power of design in developing a trustworthy, user-centered chatbot experience tailored to survivors' needs. Through an iterative process of research, co-creation, prototyping, and evaluation, we aim to integrate safe and effective digital support into mental healthcare. Our overarching goal is to bridge the gap between digital healthcare and the creative sector, fostering long-term collaboration. By combining clinical expertise with design innovation, we seek to develop personalized tools that ethically and effectively support individuals with mental health problems.
Within the film and theater world, special effects make-up is used to adapt the appearance of actors for visual storytelling. Currently the creation of special effects makeup is a time-consuming process which creates a lot of waste that doesn’t fit in with the goals of a sustainable industry. Combine with the trend of the digitization of the movie and theater industry which require faster and more iterative workflows, the current ways of creating special effects makeup requires changing. Within this project we would like to explore if the traditional way of working can be converted to a digital production process. Our research consists of three parts. Firstly, we would like to explore if a mobile face scanning rig can be used to create digital copies of actors, and such eliminate the need to creates molds. Secondly, we would like to see if digital sculpting can replace the traditional methods of sculpting molds, casts and prosthetics. Here we would like to compare both methods in terms of creativity and time consumption. The third part of our project will be to explore the use of 3D printing for the creation of molds and prosthetics.
