AIM To examine which instruments used to assess participation of children with acquired brain injury (ABI) or cerebral palsy (CP) align with attendance and/or involvement constructs of participation; and to systematically review measurement properties of these instruments in children with ABI or CP, to guide instrument selection. METHOD Five databases were searched. Instruments that quantified ‘attendance’ and/or ‘involvement’ aspects of participation according to the family of participation-related constructs were selected. Data on measurement properties were extracted and methodological quality of the studies assessed. RESULTS Thirty-seven instruments were used to assess participation in children with ABI or CP. Of those, 12 measured attendance and/or involvement. The reliability, validity, and responsiveness of eight of these instruments were examined in 14 studies with children with ABI or CP. Sufficient measurement properties were reported for most of the measures, but no instrument had been assessed on all relevant properties. Moreover, most psychometric studies have marked methodological limitations. INTERPRETATION Instruments to assess participation of children with ABI or CP should be selected carefully, as many available measures do not align with attendance and/or involvement. Evidence for measurement properties is limited, mainly caused by low methodological study quality. Future studies should follow recommended methodological guidelines.

Introduction: Midwifery education that strengthens self-efficacy can support student midwives in their role as advocates for a physiological approach to childbirth. Methods: To assess the effect of an educational intervention on self-efficacy, a pre- and post-intervention survey was administered to a control group and an intervention group of third year student midwives. The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) was supplemented with midwifery-related self-efficacy questions related to behaviour in home and hospital settings, the communication of evidence, and ability to challenge practice. Results: Student midwives exposed to midwifery education designed to strengthen self-efficacy demonstrated significantly higher levels of general self-efficacy (p = .001) when contrasted to a control cohort. These students also showed significantly higher levels of self-efficacy in advocating for physiological childbirth (p = .029). There was a non-significant increase in self-efficacy in the hospital setting in the intervention group, a finding that suggests that education may ameliorate the effect of hospital settings on midwifery practice. Discussion: In spite of the small size of the study population, education that focuses on strengthening student midwife self-efficacy shows promise.

This article investigates the phenomenon of rebound effects in relation to a transition to a Circular Economy (CE) through qualitative inquiry. The aim is to gain insights in manifestations of rebound effects by studying the Dutch textile industry as it transitions to a circular system, and to develop appropriate mitigation strategies that can be applied to ensure an effective transition. The rebound effect, known originally from the energy efficiency literature, occurs when improvements in efficiency or other technological innovations fail to deliver on their environmental promise due to (behavioral) economic mechanisms. The presence of rebound in CE contexts can therefore lead to the structural overstatement of environmental benefits of certain innovations, which can influence reaching emission targets and the preference order of recycling. In this research, the CE rebound effect is investigated in the Dutch textile industry, which is identified as being vulnerable to rebound, yet with a positive potential to avoid it. The main findings include the very low awareness of this effect amongst key stakeholders, and the identification of specific and general instances of rebound effects in the investigated industry. In addition, the relation of these effects to Circular Business Models and CE strategies are investigated, and placed in a larger context in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding about the place and role of this effect in the transition. This concerns the necessity for a new approach to how design has been practiced traditionally, and the need to place transitional developments in a systems perspective. Propositions that serve as theory-building blocks are put forward and include suggestions for further research and recommendations about dealing with rebound effects and shaping an eco-effective transition. The aim of this explorative study was to determine the key inertial measurement unit-based wheelchair mobility performance components during a wheelchair tennis match. A total of 64 wheelchair tennis matches were played by 15 wheelchair tennis players (6 women, 5 men, 4 juniors). All individual tennis wheelchairs were instrumented with inertial measurement units, two on the axes of the wheels and one on the frame. A total of 48 potentially relevant wheelchair tennis outcome variables were initially extracted from the sensor signals, based on previous wheelchair sports research and the input of wheelchair tennis experts (coaches, embedded scientists). A principal component analysis was used to reduce this set of variables to the most relevant outcomes for wheelchair tennis mobility. Results showed that wheelchair mobility performance in wheelchair tennis can be described by six components: rotations to racket side in (1) curves and (2) turns; (3) linear accelerations; (4) rotations to non-racket side in (4) turns and (5) curves; and finally, (6) linear velocities. One or two outcome variables per component were selected to allow an easier interpretation of results. These key outcome variables can be used to adequately describe the wheelchair mobility performance aspect of wheelchair tennis during a wheelchair tennis match and can be monitored during training.

Background To gain insight into the role of plantar intrinsic foot muscles in fall-related gait parameters in older adults, it is fundamental to assess foot muscles separately. Ultrasonography is considered a promising instrument to quantify the strength capacity of individual muscles by assessing their morphology. The main goal of this study was to investigate the intra-assessor reliability and measurement error for ultrasound measures for the morphology of selected foot muscles and the plantar fascia in older adults using a tablet-based device. The secondary aim was to compare the measurement error between older and younger adults and between two different ultrasound machines. Methods Ultrasound images of selected foot muscles and the plantar fascia were collected in younger and older adults by a single operator, intensively trained in scanning the foot muscles, on two occasions, 1–8 days apart, using a tablet-based and a mainframe system. The intra-assessor reliability and standard error of measurement for the cross-sectional area and/or thickness were assessed by analysis of variance. The error variance was statistically compared across age groups and machines. Results Eighteen physically active older adults (mean age 73.8 (SD: 4.9) years) and ten younger adults (mean age 21.9 (SD: 1.8) years) participated in the study. In older adults, the standard error of measurement ranged from 2.8 to 11.9%. The ICC ranged from 0.57 to 0.97, but was excellent in most cases. The error variance for six morphology measures was statistically smaller in younger adults, but was small in older adults as well. When different error variances were observed across machines, overall, the tablet-based device showed superior repeatability. Conclusions This intra-assessor reliability study showed that a tablet-based ultrasound machine can be reliably used to assess the morphology of selected foot muscles in older adults, with the exception of plantar fascia thickness. Although the measurement errors were sometimes smaller in younger adults, they seem adequate in older adults to detect group mean hypertrophy as a response to training. A tablet-based ultrasound device seems to be a reliable alternative to a mainframe system. This advocates its use when foot muscle morphology in older adults is of interest.

In this work, a feasible and low-cost approach is proposed for level measurement in multiphase systems inside tanks used for petroleum-derived oil production. The developed level sensor system consisted of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), light-dependent resistor (LDR), and a low-cost microprocessor. Two different types of oil were tested: AW460 and AW68. Linear regression (LR) was applied for 11 scenarios and showed a direct correlation between the level of oil and the sensor’s output. The measurement with AW460 oil presented a perfect linear behavior, while for AW68, a higher standard deviation was obtained justifying the occurrence of the nonlinearity in several scenarios. In order to overcome the nonlinear effect, two machine learning (ML) techniques were tested: K-nearest neighbors regression (KNNR) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network regression. The highest correlation coefficient ( R2 ) and the lowest root mean squared error (RMSE) were obtained for AW68 with MLP. Therefore, MLP was used for regression (level prediction for water, oil, and emulsion) as well as classification (identify the type of oil in the reservoir) simultaneously. The suggested network exhibited a high accuracy for oil identification (99.801%) and improved linear performance in regression ( R2 = 0.9989 and RMSE = 0.065).

We designed a wine recommendation robot and deployed it in a small supermarket. In a study aimed to evaluate our design we found that people with no intent to buy wine were interacting with the robot rather than the intended audience of wine-buying customers. Behavioural data, moreover, suggests a very different evaluation of the robot than the surveys that were completed. We also found that groups were interacting more with the robot than individuals, a finding that has been reported more often in the literature. All of these findings taken together suggest that a novelty effect may have been at play. It also suggests that field studies should take this effect more seriously. The main contribution of our work is in identifying and proposing a set of indicators and thresholds that can be used to identify that a novelty effect is present. We argue that it is important to focus more on measuring attitudes towards robots that may explain behaviour due to novelty effects. Our findings also suggest research should focus more on verifying whether real user needs are met.

Research demonstrated a large variety regarding effects of light (e.g. health, performance, or comfort effects). Since human health is related to each individual separately, the lighting conditions around these individuals should be analysed individually as well. This paper provides, based on a literature study, an overview identifying the currently used methodologies for measuring lighting conditions in light effect studies. 22 eligible articles were analysed and this resulted in two overview tables regarding the light measurement methodologies. In 70% of the papers, no measurement details were reported. In addition, light measurements were often averaged over time (in 84% of the papers) or location level (in 32% of the papers) whereas it is recommended to use continuous personal lighting conditions when light effects are being investigated. Conclusions drawn in light effect studies based on personal lighting conditions may be more trusting and valuable to be used as input for an effect-driven lighting control system.

The aims of this case report were to develop and evaluate a plan for the systematic implementation of two measurement instruments frequently recommended in Dutch physical therapy clinical guidelines: the Patient-Specific Complaints instrument and the Six-Minute Walk Test.

Het belang van innovatie voor economische groei en het scheppen van werkgelegenheid in het MKB wordt erkend door zowel academici als politici. Er worden daarom programma’s ontwikkeld om innovatie te stimuleren. Met deze maatregelen ontstaat de vraag te bepalen of deze initiatieven succesvol zijn en zo ja, in welke mate. In de literatuur hebben we geen indicator gevonden die ons in staat stelt de mate van innovativiteit van MKB bedrijven te bepalen voor een dergelijke interventie en daarna. De hoofdvraag van ons onderzoek was dan ook: hoe kunnen we het effect van een interventie voor het bevorderen van de innovatiekracht van MKB-bedrijven meten? Kijkend naar de definities van innovatie zoals die zijn verzameld door King & Anderson (2002) hebben we vastgesteld dat een bedrijf innovatief genoemd mag worden als het met opzeten succesvol nieuwe ideeën implementeert. Succesvol wil in dit verband zeggen: het draagt bij aan de winst en dus aan de continuïteit van het desbetreffende MKB-bedrijf. Door de verschillende (bewuste) innovaties te identificeren samen met de ondernemer en te berekenen wat de winstgevendheid is geweest van de innovaties, kunnen we de ’innovatiewinst’ van de ondernemer berekenen. Dit bedrag delen door de omzet creëert een indicator waarmee de innovativiteit van de organisatie door de tijd gemeten kan worden. Wij stellen daarom de volgende definitie van innovatiekracht voor: KIKR = [ [Winst Innovatie1+Winst Innovatie2+ ... +Winst Innovatie5] / Omzet] x 100. De ratio kan alleen met voldoende betrouwbaarheid bepaald worden door een gestructureerd interview met de directeur/ eigenaar van de het bedrijf door een gekwalificeerde gesprekspartner. De auteurs realiseren zich dat dit gesprek op zichzelf misschien een interventie is, omdat de ervaring leert dat het innovatiebewustzijn van de ondernemer er door toeneemt. Om te bepalen of dit daadwerkelijk zo is, en om te testen of de KIKR inderdaad als bruikbare maat voor innovatiekracht kan worden gebruikt is vervolgonderzoek noodzakelijk. Desalniettemin zijn de auteurs van mening dat met de KIKR de innovatiekracht van bedrijven door de tijd heen gemeten kan worden en daarmee een bruikbaar instrument is om het effect te bepalen van interventies die innovatiekracht moeten vergroten. The importance of innovation as an engine for economic growth and the creation of employment opportunities is acknowledged by both academia and politicians. This makes the need for good innovation measures crucial. In the third edition of the Oslo Manual (2005), a need for proper indicators to capture the changes in the nature and landscape of innovation is voiced. According to the manual, a considerable body of models and analytical frameworks for innovation were developed in the 1980s and 1990s. Over time, the scope of what is considered as innovation has been widened and expanded to include marketing and organizational innovation. In this paper, we focus on innovative performance as a measure of success. This is part of ongoing research in the Netherlands in The Hague region. This research is framed within an approach based on action research. We have worked with 45 SMEs in four sectors. This has formed the basis for the conceptual development of innovative performance as a new metric for the measurement of a successful innovation. In this paper, we review our findings thus far and explore the validity of innovative performance as an appropriate indicator for measuring innovation within SMEs.
