One major drawback of deception detection is its vulnerability to countermeasures, whereby participants wilfully modulate their physiological or neurophysiological response to critical guilt-determining stimuli. One reason for this vulnerability is that stimuli are usually presented slowly. This allows enough time to consciously apply countermeasures, once the role of stimuli is determined. However, by increasing presentation speed, stimuli can be placed on the fringe of awareness, rendering it hard to perceive those that have not been previously identified, hindering the possibility to employ countermeasures. We tested an identity deception detector by presenting first names in Rapid Serial Visual Presentation and instructing participants to lie about their own identity. We also instructed participants to apply a series of countermeasures. The method proved resilient, remaining effective at detecting deception under all countermeasures.

The visibility of sustainable energy measures is a channel of social influence, a means of conspicuous consumption, and affects the aesthetics of an environment. This study investigates how the visibility of sustainable household energy measures (i.e., installation of renewable energy and energy efficient devices) affects people's choices of those products in the Netherlands. In addition, the moderating effects of product attributes, including price, aesthetic appeal, environmental impact, and popularity, are assessed. A choice experiment was conducted in which participants chose between options of heat pumps and solar panels. The results indicate that visibility decreases the probability that a person chooses a heat pump, whereas visibility does not affect the choice of solar panels. For heat pumps, a higher aesthetic appeal mitigates the negative effect of visibility. Interestingly, a more positive environmental impact worsens the negative effect of visibility on the choice of heat pumps. The study suggests that visibility is not influential for choices of sustainable energy measures that have been part of the street scenery for a while, such as solar panels. For devices of which presence is unfamiliar, visibility is perceived as negative and considered a reason to choose another model. For a decision about whether to visibly install unfamiliar sustainable energy measures, expression of aesthetic style is a positive and influential factor, whereas increased environmentalism negatively affects choice.

In response to a rapidly changing, increasingly insecure and complex labor market, career counselors and researchers are developing methods that can meet the needs of individuals who would navigate this new terrain. In the last two or three decades, narrative career counseling practices (Cochran, 1997; McMahon & Watson, 2012; Reid & West, 2011; Savickas, 2012) have been developed to promote career adaptability (Savickas, 2011) and career resilience (Lyons, Schweitzer & Ng, 2015). Narrative counseling (i.e. career construction) is founded on the idea that in order to survive and thrive on the labor market of the 21st century, individuals must reflexively construct their identities in a process of meaning making, where identity is co-constructed in the form of a narrative: a story about who one is that provides both meaning and direction (Wijers & Meijers, 1996). The Salvation Army has been battling social problems in the Netherlands for more than 125 years. Over the course of this period, the Dutch Salvation Army has developed into a well-known faith-based organization as well as an important professional social service provider. These two characteristics: religious work and social work, are regarded by the Army as essential to its identity, and are considered distinct but in – separable. However, as this study shows, during much of the Army’s history this bilateral character created an inescapable field of tension. This became explicitly clear with the development of the Dutch social policy system during the twentieth century, when the evolving relationship between the Salvation Army and the Dutch government created certain problems for both actors. How would the government cooperate with a valued social service provider that had an explicit faith-based identity? And on the other hand, how did the Army cope with this relationship in relation to its identity? The work presented in this thesis was supported by the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (HU) and the VU University Amsterdam.

To prevent the social worker being jammed between the economic and rationalized logic of managers and politicians on the one hand, and the life world of the people on the other, he needs to develop a healthy identity. The social constructive view can help to overcome the identity crisis the social professional is in. It offers a model to analyze the conflict a social professional has to deal with, and forces the social worker to make a clear and moral choice for the life world of his clients. This view seems also suitable to develop an indigenous body of practice theory for social work. The presence theory, the family group work and constructive social work demonstrates the possibilities. To regain confidence from both the people and the politicians, the rationalized system of planning and control has to be replaced by the trust model. To develop this model we have to find ways to justify the money used in this sector.

Brains and gender, separately and in their interrelatedness, are hot items today in popular journals and academic literature. It is in particular the complexity of the interdependence of physical-, psychological-, and contextual-related developments of feminization in education that we focus on these contributions. We argue that a combination of recent findings of brain research and Marcia's psychological model of identity development in a “provocative pedagogy”—combining youngsters’ (boys and girls) need for exploration, console, and support—is a promising “stepped care” strategy for religious development of youngsters in a multicultural and multireligious context.

SMEs within the rural Dutch municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug (UHG) are becoming increasingly aware of the need for sustainable ‘green’ business. Their sense of sustainability is strongly defined by the ‘green’ environment in which they live and work. They were seeking an entrepreneurial approach to sustainability that is reflective of the area and fits their ecosystem. This approach was to be aimed at innovation and branding. We assumed that the role and function of a location-based brand differs from that of product or corporate brands because it has more complexity. Taking place-branding theory as our starting point, we set out to construe a brand that is a) based on local identity and b) has the power to motivate and mobilize SME entrepreneurs to form cooperative sustainable networks. This paper presents our analysis for a brand framework and demonstrates how it has been applied to imbue sustainable ‘green’ impact.

Er is in Nederland nog weinig wetenschappelijke aandacht voor het werk van penitentiair inrichtingswerkers (PIW’ers). Onderzoek is tot nu toe vooral gericht op werkdruk en uitval of onderlinge agressie,een enkele uitzondering daargelaten. Het Nederlandse ‘Prison Project’ is vooral gericht op de effecten van detentie op gedetineerden en hun familie en nauwelijks op ervaringen van degenen die met de gedetineerden werken. Een uitgebreid onderzoek naar het functioneren van PIW’ers dateert al van begin jaren negentig. Er is dan ook betrekkelijk weinig bekend over de beleving en de inhoud van het werk van PIW’ers. In Nederland welteverstaan, want daarbuiten zijn mooie studies verricht, bijvoorbeeld door Liebling en collega’s in Groot-Brittannië en recent door Tournel in België. Niet voor niets wordt het werk van PIW’ers getypeerd als ‘low visibility work’. Er is nog weinig bekend over hun werk en de wijze waarop zij dat werk beleven.
