Survivors of father–daughter incest often suffer from complex trauma and sensory insensitivity, making it difficult to decipher the sensations in the body and experience body ownership, self-location and agency. This case study illustrates how sensory focused, Trauma-Centred Developmental Transformations can help restore or develop a bodily self, desensitize fear-based schemas, revise deeply buried beliefs and extend repertoire.

Aafje is slachtoffer van langdurige incest en geweld binnen haar eigen gezin. Vanaf haar derde jaar wordt zij misbruikt door haar vader, vanaf haar twaalfde jaar door haar broer. Ook een derde familielid is bij het misbruik betrokken. Het duurt voort tot haar negentiende jaar. Aafje groeit zo op in een bedreigende, onveilige omgeving. Het verhaal van Aafje is opgetekend in een biografie. Een confronterend verhaal over wat er mis kan gaan in de hulpverlening. Tegelijkertijd een verhaal van hoop en herstel: dat het mogelijk is om na jarenlange ernstige traumatisering en een moeizame gang door de ggz, te herstellen en een menswaardig leven te leiden. The purpose of this article is the presentation of a multidimensional guideline for the diagnosis of anxiety and anxiety-related behavior problems in people with intellectual disability (ID), with a substantial role for the nurse in this diagnostic process. DESIGN AND METHODS: The guideline is illustrated by a case report of a woman with ID with severe problems. FINDINGS: It appears that a multidimensional diagnostic approach involving multidisciplinary team efforts can result in a more accurate diagnosis and improved subsequent treatment. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Nurses should be engaged in the diagnostic process because of their ability to make direct observations and to actively participate in carrying out all parts of the guideline.
