Friday 27th October 2018 the official kick-off event unfolded at Inholland University of Applied Sciences in Delft. Participants from numerous companies and research establishments congregated to make new acquaintances and share their ideas. The dean of Inholland Delft, Gerard van Oosten, gave a welcoming speech. Next lector Robotica Cock Heemskerk formally introduced the unique HiPerGreen project. Several guest speakers presented additional subject related information: Jeremy Harbinson (distinguished researcher in plant physiology atm Wageningen UR), David Pajares (AvioniCS – a company specialised in rapid prototyping and control systems for small UAVs) and Arash Noroozi (ElpaNav, a start-up company for localisation technology). Lucien Fesselet, assistant project manager, resumed the day with a brief history of the ‘Drones in de kas’ project where HiPerGreen evolved from. Then the audience were split into smaller groups to assess the risks associated within each project work package. A important outcome was the consensus that the business case validation should be started right from the beginning. The kick-off was concluded with a drink.

The catalytic oxidation of potato starch by [MnIV2 (μ-O)3(tmtacn)2][H2O](CH3COO)2 (Mncat, with tmtacn =1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) with H2O2, was recently introduced as a promising alternative to ubiquitous sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Here, we report an in-depth investigation into interactions of the catalyst with the starch granule. Pitted starches obtained by pre-treatment with high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) were shown to result in a uniquely homogeneous oxidation. To study this further, fractionation of oxidised potato starch was done which showed a preference for the oxidation of smaller granules with a higher relative surface area. This result was corroborated by chemical surface gelatinisation of fractionated granules. These studies showed that the inside of the granules was oxidised, but that Mncat had a moderate preference for oxidation of the periphery. Together, these results allow for a better understanding of oxidation of starch by Mncat and how it differs from NaOCl oxidation making further optimisation of the process possible.

Knowing firefighters’ locations in a burning building would dramatically improve their safety. In this study from the Saxion Research Centre for Design and Technology in the Firebee project, an algorithm was developed and tested to enhance the estimation of a person’s location, based on inertial measurements combined with measurements of the earth’s magnetic field. The developed algorithm is an extension of the zero velocity update technique. Without any enhancements, the accuracy of the estimation is in the order of several meters after measuring for only a few seconds. With enhancements, the accuracy improved to be within five meters after measuring for ten minutes. Our result demonstrated that it is possible to determine in which room and on which floor a person is after ten minutes. Major improvements were observed in the estimation of the sensor’s height. The results are promising and the following phases of the project focus on improving the solution and on developing the concept into a practically applicable system.

Gepubliceerd in Mikroniek, nr. 6 2018 In manufacturing environments where collaborative robots are employed, conventional computer vision algorithms have trouble in the robust localisation and detection of products due to changing illumination conditions and shadows caused by a human sharing the workspace with the robotic system. In order to enhance the robustness of vision applications, machine learning with neural networks is explored. The performance of machine-learning algorithms versus conventional computer vision algorithms is studied by observing a generic user scenario for the manufacturing process: the assembly of a product by localisation, identification and manipulation of building blocks.

In this paper, we address the problem of people detection and tracking in crowded scenes using range cameras. We propose a new method for people detection and localisation based on the combination of background modelling and template matching. The method uses an adaptive background model in the range domain to characterise the scene without people. Then a 3D template is placed in possible people locations by projecting it in the background to reconstruct a range image that is most similar to the observed range image. We tested the method on a challenging outdoor dataset and compared it to two methods that each shares one characteristic with the proposed method: a similar template-based method that works in 2D and a well-known baseline method that works in the range domain. Our method performs significantly better, does not deteriorate in crowded environments and runs in real time.

Friday 23rd March 2018 the first HiPerGreen semi-annual symposium took place at the newly opened World Horti Center in Naaldwijk. Participants in the form of students, professors and company representatives came together to share progress and ideas. Cock Heemskerk, lector Robotica, opened the event with a welcoming speech. Lucien Fesselet, assistant project manager, followed with general updates on the project. Then the floor was given to the students to present their results and progress. Pieter van der Hoeven, associate lector, presented on behalf of four graduating students from the Business, Finance and Law department the assignment on market research. The findings show great potential in business opportunity with the Orchid market. Amora Amir, a potential PhD researcher on big data, gave a speech on the usefulness and the need to understand big amounts of data. Lucien Fesselet performed a live flight demonstration to give an idea of the capabilities and the behaviour of the drone. After the risk analasys the sympoium was concluded with a drink.

This article reports on qualitative research among 48 social professionals, managers and policymakers and their perceptions of activating citizenship, social work roles and responsibilities, carried out in Utrecht and Tartu. Professionals from both countries agreed to the idea of activating citizenship but stressing the perspective of personalised or lived citizenship, each person to his own capacities and embedded in the personal context. Nearly all respondents were critical about the recognition of social workers as a full profession, about the new management way of steering social work and about cooperation between different groups of professionals and services. Although both countries have quite different historical and cultural backgrounds, the authors found many similarities among social workers regarding their ideas on support, participation and commitment to the people they work for and work with. International research projects contribute to a more strongly recognised social work theory and social work practice by getting a better understanding, in particular of the way social work adapts to different contexts but from a highly recognisable international discourse within social work.

Immunofluorescence microscopy in this study shows that GLUT-4 protein expression is fibre-type specific within a muscle. It is postulated that both fibre-type-dependent and fibre-type-independent factors affect GLUT-4 expression.
