Physical activity monitoring with wearable technology has the potential to support stroke rehabilitation. Little is known about how physical therapists use and value the use of wearable activity monitors. This cross-sectional study explores the use, perspectives, and barriers to wearable activity monitoring in day-to-day stroke care routines amongst physical therapists. Over 300 physical therapists in primary and geriatric care and rehabilitation centers in the Netherlands were invited to fill in an online survey that was developed based on previous studies and interviews with experts. In total, 103 complete surveys were analyzed. Out of the 103 surveys, 27% of the respondents were already using activity monitoring. Of the suggested treatment purposes of activity monitoring, 86% were perceived as useful by more than 55% of the therapists. The most recognized barriers to clinical implementation were lack of skills and knowledge of patients (65%) and not knowing what brand and type of monitor to choose (54%). Of the non-users, 79% were willing to use it in the future. In conclusion, although the concept of remote activity monitoring was perceived as useful, it was not widely adopted by physical therapists involved in stroke care. To date, skills, beliefs, and attitudes of individual therapists determine the current use of wearable technology.

This article examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sign language interpreting profession drawing on data from a fourth and final survey conducted in June 2021 as part of a series of online “living surveys” during the pandemic. The survey, featuring 331 respondents, highlights significant changes in the occupational conditions and practices of sign language interpreters due to the sudden shift towards remote video-mediated interpreting. The findings reveal a range of challenges faced by interpreters, including the complexities of audience design, lack of backchanneling from deaf consumers, the need for heightened self-monitoring, nuanced conversation management, and team work. Moreover, the study highlights the physical and mental health concerns that have emerged among interpreters as a result of the shift in working conditions, and a need for interpreters to acquire new skills such as coping with the multimodal nature of online interpreting. While the blend of remote, hybrid, and on-site work has introduced certain advantages, it also poses new challenges encompassing workload management, online etiquette, and occupational health concerns. The survey’s findings underscore the resilience and adaptability of SLIs in navigating the shift to remote interpreting, suggesting a lasting transformation in the profession with implications for future practice, training, and research in the post-pandemic era.

Technology in general, and assistive technology in particular, is considered to be a promising opportunity to address the challenges of an aging population. Nevertheless, in health care, technology is not as widely used as could be expected. In this chapter, an overview is given of theories and models that help to understand this phenomenon. First, the design of (assistive) technologies will be addressed and the importance of human-centered design in the development of new assistive devices will be discussed. Also theories and models are addressed about technology acceptance in general. Specific attention will be given to technology acceptance in healthcare professionals, and the implementation of technology within healthcare organizations. The chapter will be based on the state of the art of scientific literature and will be illustrated with examples from our research in daily practice considering the different perspectives of involved stakeholders.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the experiences of safety and security management students, enrolled in an undergraduate course in the Netherlands, and present quantitative data from an online survey that aimed to explore the factors that have contributed to students’ satisfaction with, and engagement in, online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main findings suggest an interesting paradox of technology, which is worth further exploration in future research. Firstly, students with self perceived higher technological skill levels tend to reject online education more often as they see substantial shortcomings of classes in the way they are administered as compared to the vast available opportunities for real innovation. Secondly, as opposed to democratising education and allowing for custom-made, individualistic education schedules that help less-privileged students, online education can also lead to the displacement of education by income-generating activities altogether. Lastly, as much as technology allowed universities during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue with education, the transition to the environment, which is defined by highly interactive and engaging potential, may in fact be a net contributor to the feelings of social isolation, digital educational inequality and tension around commercialisation in higher education.

Assistive technology supports maintenance or improvement of an individual’s functioning and independence, though for people in need the access to assistive products is not always guaranteed. This paper presents a generic quality framework for assistive technology service delivery that can be used independent of the setting, context, legislative framework, or type of technology. Based on available literature and a series of discussions among the authors, a framework was developed. It consists of 7 general quality criteria and four indicators for each of these criteria. The criteria are: accessibility; competence; coordination; efficiency; flexibility; user centeredness, and infrastructure. This framework can be used at a micro level (processes around individual users), meso level (the service delivery scheme or programme) or at a macro level (the whole country). It aims to help identify in an easy way the main strengths and weaknesses of a system or process, and thus guide possible improvements. As a next step in the development of this quality framework the authors propose to organise a global consultancy process to obtain responses from stakeholders across the world and to plan a number of case studies in which the framework is applied to different service delivery systems and processes in different countries.

Ambient intelligence technologies are a means to support ageing-in-place by monitoring clients in the home. In this study, monitoring is applied for the purpose of raising an alarm in an emergency situation, and thereby, providing an increased sense of safety and security. Apart from these technological solutions, there are numerous environmental interventions in the home environment that can support people to age-in-place. The aim of this study was to investigate the needs and motives, related to ageing-in-place, of the respondents receiving ambient intelligence technologies, and to investigate whether, and how, these technologies contributed to aspects of ageing-in-place. This paper presents the results of a qualitative study comprised of interviews and observations of technology and environmental interventions in the home environment among 18 community-dwelling older adults with a complex demand for care.

Purpose People with dementia (PwD) often present Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia, which include agitation, apathy, and wandering amongst others, also known as challenging behaviors (CBs). These CBs worsen the quality of life (QoL) of the PwD and are a major source/reason of (increased) caregiver burden. The intricate nature of the symptoms implies that there is no “one size fits all solution”, and necessitates tailored approaches for both PwDs and caregivers. To timely prevent these behaviors assistive technology can be utilized to guide caregivers by enabling remote monitoring of contextual, environmental, and behavioral parameters, and subsequently alarming nurses on early-stage behavioral changes prior to the presentation of CBs. Eventually, the system should propose an intervention/action to prevent escalation. In turn, improvement in QoL for both caregivers and PwD living in nursing homes (NHs) is expected. In the current project “MOnitoring Onbegrepen Gedrag bij Dementie met sensortechnologie” (MOOD-Sense), we aim to develop such a monitoring system. The strengths of this new monitoring system lie in its ability to align with the individual needs of the PwD, utilization of a combination of wearables and ambient sensors to obtain contextual data, such as location or sound, and predict or monitor CBs individually rather than in groups, thus facilitating person-centered care, based on ontological reasoning. The project is divided into three parts, Toolbox A, B and C. Toolbox A focuses on obtaining insight in which behaviors are challenging according to nurses and how they are described. Previous studies utilize clinical terminology to describe or classify behavior, we aim to employ concrete descriptions of behavior that are observable and independent of clinical terminology, aligning with nurses who are often the first to notice behavior and can be operationalized such that it can also be aligned with sensor data. As a result, an ontology will be developed based on the data such that sensor data can be integrated into the same conceptual information that standardizes the communication in our monitoring system. Toolbox B focuses on translating data coming from various sensors into the concepts expressed in the ontology, and timely communicate situations of interest to the caregivers. In Toolbox C the focus is exploring interventions/actions employed in practice to prevent CBs. Method In Toolbox A we used a qualitative approach to collect descriptions of CBs. For this purpose, we employed focus groups (FGs) with nursing staff who provide daily care to PwD. In Toolbox B pilot studies were conducted. A set of experiments using sensors in NHs were performed. During each pilot, multiple PwD with CBs in NHs were monitored with both ambient and wearables sensors. The pilots were iteratively approached, which means that insights from previous pilot studies were used to improve consecutive pilot studies. Lastly, the elaboration of Toolbox C is ongoing. Results and Discussion Regarding Toolbox A four FGs were conducted during the period from January 2023 to May 2024. Each FG was comprised of four nurses (n = 16). From the FGs we gained insights into behavioral descriptions and the context of CBs. Although data analysis has to be performed yet, there are indications that changes preceding CBs can be observed, such as frowning or clenching fists for agitation or aggression. Further results will be available soon. Regarding Toolbox B a monitoring system, based on sensors, is developed iteratively (see Figure 1) and piloted in three consecutive NHs from January 2021 to December 2023. Each pilot was comprised of two PwD (n = 6). Analysis of sensor data is ongoing.
