By use of a literature review and an environmental scan four plausible future scenarios will be created, based on the research question: How could the future of backpack tourism look like in 2030, and how could tourism businesses anticipate on the changing demand. The scenarios, which allow one to ‘think out of the box’, will eventually be translated into recommendations towards the tourism sector and therefore can create a future proof company strategy.

Aan de hand van de ‘customer journey’ beschrijven we in dit rapport welke barrières mensen met een beperking ervaren voor, tijdens en na de reis en hoe de reisindustrie hierop kan inspelen. In dit rapport vatten we de belangrijkste bevindingen samen van vijf onderzoeksrapporten en ons literatuuronderzoek.

Messages with a clear focus on personal benefits and social and personal norms could impact holidaymakers' preferences towards opting for sustainability actions. This argument was explored using a three stage, sequential, mixed methods study. Firstly, analysis of current sustainability messages from three responsible tour operators revealed a low likelihood of them influencingcustomer preferences towards sustainability actions. An online survey of consumer beliefs and values proved that a manipulated message was more persuasive than the real messages used by the tour operators. This informed an experiment in message design that showed preferences for: i) obtaining individual gains from acting pro-sustainability (the importance of self-benefit), ii) doing what others are doing (the appeal of conforming to the descriptive norm), and iii) doing what others think one should do (the appeal of conforming to the injunctive norm). The findings have led the ANVR to relaunch their sustainability programme, focusing on customer benefits.

The general aim of this research project has been to examine this phenomenon of tourism flow switching and consider the factors driving the geopolitical instability that can compromise destination security. On a more practical level the research has also examined what the reactions of Dutch tourists are to security threats affecting their tourism decisions and looked at the development of preventive measures against attacks by destinations and travel organisations. Finally, the research on the regional geopolitics of the MENA and European areas have together with the attitudes of Dutch tourists towards destination security been used as inputs into a scenario planning process involving the steering group of tour operators who originally commissioned this research, as participants. This process has focussed on macro environmental analysis, identification of key uncertainties, and the development of resilient strategies for the future.

Hogescholen starten in 2022 met een eigen doctoraatstraject: het Professional Doctorate. Daarmee introduceert het hbo een nieuwe beroepsopleiding waarmee het de grenzen in de beroepspraktijk wil verleggen. Kandidaten worden opgeleid tot hooggekwalificeerde professionals die leren te interveniëren in complexe vraagstukken zoals de energietransitie of de gezondheidszorg. Belangrijke en noodzakelijke toevoeging Hogescholen zien een doctoraatstraject in het hbo als een belangrijke en noodzakelijke toevoeging binnen het hoger onderwijs stelsel. Het Professional Doctorate (PD) maakt een doorlopende leerlijn van bachelor via master tot doctorate in de beroepskolom mogelijk, en wordt nauw verbonden met het overige hbo-onderwijs. Doel is dat hbo bachelor- en masterstudenten in hun onderwijs de vruchten plukken van het onderzoek van PD-kandidaten naar de laatste ontwikkelingen in de beroepspraktijk. Daarmee is de introductie van het professional doctorate ook een investering in de bredere aansluiting van het hbo op de arbeidsmarkt.

In a matter of weeks last year, discussions regarding tourism in cities changed from how to deal with overtourism to how to deal with ‘no tourism’. Shortly thereafter, a great number of posts on LinkedIn, websites, and blogs highlighted how the tourism crisis that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic could help reinvent tourism, into something more equal, inclusive, and sustainable. And so, online – at leastin mypersonalonlinebubble – there seemedtobe a real momentum for proper, transformative changes in (urban) tourism. How can we rebuild urban tourism in a sustainable and resilient way?
