Urban tourism increasingly focuses on the role of hospitality in cities, evolving from a means to strengthen tourism as a ‘product’, towards a focus on tourism as an opportunity for revitalization and transformation of destinations. In this context, cities are considered dynamic communities in which ‘hosts’ (entrepreneurs, residents, municipalities) and ‘guests’ (visitors, tourists) co-habitate and co-create multisensorial experiences. This shift in focus comes hand in hand with increasing awareness of competitiveness and sustainability of destinations, expressed by a harmonious relationship between city residents and visitors and a balanced usage of the city as a shared resource. This is of great importance, given the intense usage of urban spaces – the city center of Amsterdam being an illustrative example – and the multiple purposes that these spaces represent for different stakeholders. This paper presents the outcome of a review study into city hospitality experience indicators. We integrate these indicators as a basis for the development of a new scale for measuring the effectiveness of hospitality interventions in relation to outcome variables such as satisfaction and net promotor score (NPS). We thereby provide an important means for scholars and practitioners to develop sustainable tourism actions inclusive of local community interests, in support of efforts toward more balanced city experiences among all stakeholders.
Cahier #2 describes a series of design probes that explored cooperative area development in the Amsterdam brownfield redevelopment site of Buiksloterham. These probes were tailored to investigate specific aspects of ‘hackable citymaking’: collaborative practices between different stakeholders, where new media technologies are employed to open up urban institutions and infrastructures to systemic change, in the public interest.
World globalisation drives companies to undertake international expansion with the aim of retaining or growing their businesses. When companies globalize, managers encounter new challenges in making international marketing strategy (IMS) decisions, which are influenced by perceived cultural and business distance between their home- and foreign country. Telkom Indonesia International (Telin) was formed by Telkom Indonesia (i.e. the state-owned company in the telecommunication industry in Indonesia) to engage in international business within a global market. The central question in this study is to what extent do managers’ perceived cultural and business distance between home- and foreign country influence their IMS decisions? A mixed research strategy will be employed by applying qualitative and quantitative methods concurrently. The data collection will involve interviews with CEOs and managers, alongside a web survey to 55 managers of Telkom's. Results suggest important consequences for IMS decisions and emphasizes the need for dialogue on perceptions of cultural and business characteristics of countries.
The impacts of tourism on destinations and the perceptions of local communities have been a major concern both for the industry and research in the past decades. However, tourism planning has been mainly focused on traditions that promote the increase of tourism without taking under consideration the wellbeing of both residents and visitors. To develop a more sustainable tourism model, the inclusion of local residents in tourism decision-making is vital. However, this is not always possible due to structural, economic and socio-cultural restrictions that residents face resulting to their disempowerment. This study aims to explore and interpret the formal processes around tourism decision-making and community empowerment in urban settings. The research proposes a comparative study of three urban destinations in Europe (The Hague in the Netherlands, San Sebastian in Spain and, Ioannina in Greece) that experience similar degree of tourism growth. The proposed study will use a design-based approach in order to understand tourism decision-making and what empowers or disempowers community participation within the destinations. Based on the findings of primary and secondary data, a community empowerment model will be applied in one the destinations as a pilot for resident engagement in tourism planning. The evaluation of the pilot will allow for an optimized model to be created with implications for tourism planning at a local level that can contribute to sustainable destinations that safeguard the interests of local residents and tourists.
Het Hanze Innovation Traineeship Pilot project is geïnitieerd op de Hanzehogeschool Groningen door drie onderzoeksgroepen (lectoraten) die zijn ingebed in het Marian van Os Centre of Expertise Ondernemen (CoEO). De trainees worden gecoacht in een Community of Learners en begeleid door een diverse groep van onderzoekers van de volgende onderzoeksgroepen van de Hanzehogeschool Groningen: (1) International Business, (2) Marketing/Marktgericht Ondernemen en (3) User-Centered Design. Het doel van het programma is om regionale MKBs in Noord-Nederland te ondersteunen om duurzaam te innoveren met de hulp en ondersteuning van trainees en onderzoekers van de drie onderzoeksgroepen. De trainees worden begeleid bij het ontwikkelen en implementeren van een door onderzoek ondersteunde innovatie tijdens een afstudeerproject en een 12-maanden durende traineeship bij het bedrijf. Bij de start van het programma ondergaan de MKBs een innovatie-gezondheids-check die wordt herhaald nadat de traineeship is afgerond. Over het algemeen zouden de bedrijven hun bedrijfsprestaties en innovatiecapaciteit moeten kunnen verbeteren door middel van het programma. Verder zal de onderzoekssamenwerking tussen de onderzoeksgroepen van de Hanzehogeschool en de MKBs leiden tot een beter inzicht in innovatiebarrières en succesfactoren. De opgedane kennis over regionale MKB-innovatie zal in alle sectoren en industrieën worden geprojecteerd. De uiteindelijke projectresultaten zullen dienen voor het besluitvormingsproces van toekomstige innovatie traineeship programma's
Door de populariteit van speciaalbieren is de vraag naar hop gestegen en met name de vraag naar soorten hop die niet op grote schaal worden geteeld. Het idee is om deze hop te gaan telen in een urban farm. De voordelen zijn dat je nu jaarrond verse hop of zoals op de fles vermeld staat ‘wet hops’ kan telen, de opbrengst per vierkante meter stijgt en er een constante en betere kwaliteit te waardborgen is. Light City Hops wil met dit onderzoeksvoorstel een teeltprotocol ontwikkelen voor een urban hop farm en een marketing strategie opstellen.
