Background: The aim of this study is to validate a newly developed nurses' self-efficacy sources inventory. We test the validity of a five-dimensional model of sources of self-efficacy, which we contrast with the traditional four-dimensional model based on Bandura's theoretical concepts. Methods: Confirmatory factor analysis was used in the development of the newly developed self-efficacy measure. Model fit was evaluated based upon commonly recommended goodness-of-fit indices, including the χ2 of the model fit, the Root Mean Square Error of approximation (RMSEA), the Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), the Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), and the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Results: All 22 items of the newly developed five-factor sources of self-efficacy have high factor loadings (range .40-.80). Structural equation modeling showed that a five-factor model is favoured over the four-factor model. Conclusions and implications: Results of this study show that differentiation of the vicarious experience source into a peer- and expert based source reflects better how nursing students develop self-efficacy beliefs. This has implications for clinical learning environments: a better and differentiated use of self-efficacy sources can stimulate the professional development of nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are daunting environments for physiotherapy (PT) students performing clinical rotations. To prepare students for this environment, a newly developed, evidence-based e-learning module was designed and implemented in the undergraduate curriculum. The aim of this study was to investigate whether e-learning is a feasible method in preparing PT students for clinical work in complex ICU environments, as perceived by students and experts.METHODS: A mixed methods proof of concept study was undertaken. Participants were final-year students of an international curriculum, and experts from didactic and clinical fields. An e-learning module consisting of 7 separate chapters based on the latest scientific evidence and clinical expertise was developed, piloted and incorporated into the undergraduate curriculum as a compulsory course to be completed prior to clinical ICU rotations. Data were collected through 3 focus group meetings and 5 semi-structured interviews; these meetings and interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed.RESULTS: The study sample comprised of 14 students and 5 experts. Thematic analysis revealed three themes: expected competencies of PT students in ICU, feeling prepared for ICU clinical work and dealing with local variety. The e-learning module enabled students to anticipate clinical situations and PT tasks in the ICU. Higher level clinical reasoning skills, handling of lines and wires and dealing with out-of-textbook situations could not be achieved with the e-learning module alone.CONCLUSIONS: An e-learning module can sufficiently prepare PT students for their clinical tasks in the ICU, as long as it is integrated with, or closely connected to, the students' clinical placement.

Novice nurses currently feel unprepared for the social dynamics of the workplace, due to a lack of assertiveness. Although clinical placements in nursing curricula should prepare student nurses for the demanding work environment, they do not seem to meet these expectations. Our study looked into Dutch students’ experiences of clinical placements as a learning environment for assertiveness. Twelve semistructured interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed, revealing three themes and four subthemes. Clinical placements varied greatly in their capability to stimulate assertiveness development. The team's supportiveness toward students and the didactical skill of the coach mainly influenced this capability. In general, students lacked a clear professional role with regards to their colleagues, stifling assertive behavior with the fear of failing the clinical placement. Our findings indicate that future-proof nursing curricula should support the development of assertive interprofessional conduct in students both before and during clinical placement.

Youth care is under increasing pressure, with rising demand, longer waiting lists, and growing staff shortages. In the Netherlands, one in seven children and adolescents is currently receiving youth care. At the same time, professionals face high workloads, burnout risks, and significant administrative burdens. This combination threatens both the accessibility and quality of care, leading to escalating problems for young people and families. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers promising opportunities to relieve these pressures by supporting professionals in their daily work. However, many AI initiatives in youth care fail to move beyond pilot stages, due to barriers such as lack of user acceptance, ethical concerns, limited professional ownership, and insufficient integration into daily practice. Empirical research on how AI can be responsibly and sustainably embedded in youth care is still scarce. This PD project aims to develop practice-based insights and strategies that strengthen the acceptance and long-term adoption of AI in youth care, in ways that support professional practice and contribute to appropriate care. The focus lies not on the technology itself, but on how professionals can work with AI within complex, high-pressure contexts. The research follows a cyclical, participatory approach, combining three complementary implementation frameworks: the Implementation Guide (Kaptein), the CFIR model (Damschroder), and the NASSS-CAT framework (Greenhalgh). Three case studies serve as core learning environments: (1) a speech-to-text AI tool to support clinical documentation, (2) Microsoft Copilot 365 for organization-wide adoption in support teams, and (3) an AI chatbot for parents in high-conflict divorces. Throughout the project, professionals, clients, ethical experts, and organizational stakeholders collaborate to explore the practical, ethical, and organizational conditions under which AI can responsibly strengthen youth care services.
