How can transport and land-use transitions in urban regions be understood and supported? This question is increasingly relevant for researchers and policy makers alike given the growing urgency of sustainability issues confronting cities and the limited improvements can be observed despite continued policy attention, for example Transit-oriented development policies. To tackle this question, this thesis draws on theories and concepts from transition studies. This has led to a richer conceptualisation of transitions and the extent to which policy makers can actively influence them. Transport and land-use transitions can be seen as resulting from the interaction between established and novel structures and practices and exogenous developments. In historic case studies carried out in Munich and Zürich, we see that in transitions that have taken place troubles, or difficulties that people experience in their daily lives, play an important role in focusing political debates. In the process of reaching consensus regarding problems and solutions, interest groups, coalition building and both implicit and explicit societal rules open to conflict and supportive of its resolution play a pivotal role. To aid in supporting transition attempts, a reflexive planning approach has been developed and tested in the region of Amsterdam. The breadth of the focus in this approach in terms of developments considered and actors involved resulted in potential solutions that differed from traditional policy in terms of innovativeness and the extent of support for them.

This paper focuses on the use of discrete event simulation (DES) as a decision support tool for airport land use development. As a study case, Querétaro Airport (Mexico) is used, due to its rapid growth and the different services it offers. The SIMIO® software was used to carry out a macro-level simulation of the airport’s processes, considering generic process times, flight types and demand schedules. The resulting strategic simulation model can be used to diagnose the current growth situation, analyse the airport's growth potential, and evaluate different expansion scenarios using the available land, including the expansion of the terminal building, cargo operations or MRO. The arrival and departure of aircraft (commercial, cargo, maintenance, aviation school and private aviation) at the airport were simulated to detect bottlenecks for different expansion scenarios, that aim to find an optimal balance between the growth options in the different airport grounds. The objective is to compare the potential growth of different layout expansion possibilities. Preliminary results indicate that land use options have a great impact on the growth potential of the airport and some general aviation activities, such as the aviation school, are interfering with the potential growth of other activities at Querétaro Airport.

Looptijd 01 november 2020 - 31 oktober 2025 Aanpak Er is een haalbaarheidsstudie uitgevoerd, die uitwees dat de interventie geschikt is voor de Nederlandse praktijk. Op de neurologische en geriatrische afdelingen van drie ziekenhuizen is Function Focused Care in Hospital in de dagelijkse zorg geïmplementeerd en geëvalueerd op effectiviteit. Over de interventie Function Focused Care (FFC) is een zorgbenadering waarin verpleegkundigen patiënten actief betrekken bij alle zorgmomenten om hun fysiek functioneren te optimaliseren. Eerder onderzoek heeft laten zien dat FFC een positief effect heeft op fysieke activiteit, mobiliteit en ADL bij ouderen in de wijk en de langdurige zorg. Ook laten studies in de acute zorg belovende resultaten zien van FFC op fysieke activiteit en mobiliteit bij ouderen opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. Voorbeelden van zorg volgens de FFC-benadering zijn met de patiënt naar de badkamer lopen in plaats van wassen op bed, of de maaltijd aan tafel nuttigen in plaats van zittend in bed eten. De essentie van FFC is het behouden of, indien mogelijk, verbeteren van het fysieke functioneren. Tijdens de hele ziekenhuisopname wordt de patiënt aangemoedigd meer tijd te laten besteden aan fysieke activiteit op een op de patiënt aangepast niveau. Energy transition is key to achieving a sustainable future. In this transition, an often neglected pillar is raising awareness and educating youth on the benefits, complexities, and urgency of renewable energy supply and energy efficiency. The Master Energy for Society, and particularly the course “Society in Transition”, aims at providing a first overview on the urgency and complexities of the energy transition. However, educating on the energy transition brings challenges: it is a complex topic to understand for students, especially when they have diverse backgrounds. In the last years we have seen a growing interest in the use of gamification approaches in higher institutions. While most practices have been related to digital gaming approaches, there is a new trend: escape rooms. The intended output and proposed innovation is therefore the development and application of an escape room on energy transition to increase knowledge and raise motivation among our students by addressing both hard and soft skills in an innovative and original way. This project is interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary due to the complexity of the topic; it consists of three different stages, including evaluation, and requires the involvement of students and colleagues from the master program. We are confident that this proposed innovation can lead to an improvement, based on relevant literature and previous experiences in other institutions, and has the potential to be successfully implemented in other higher education institutions in The Netherlands.
