This longitudinal, quantitative study contributes to the debate on technology-based professional development by examining the extent to which a learning (LinkedIn) intervention in a university setting affects an individual’s social media use for professional development, and the extent to which this relates to self-reported employability. In addition, we investigated how this relationship is moderated by an individual’s motivation to communicate through social media (LinkedIn). Based on social capital theory and the conservation of resources theory, we developed a set of hypotheses that were tested based on longitudinal data collected from university employees (N = 101) in middle- and high-level jobs. First, in line with our expectations, social media use for professional development was significantly higher after the learning intervention than before. Second, partially in line with our expectations, social media use for professional development was positively related with the employability dimension anticipation and optimization. Third, contrary to our expectations, motivation to communicate through social media (LinkedIn) did not have a moderating role in this relationship. We concluded that the learning intervention has the potential to foster social media use for professional development, and in turn, can contribute to individuals’ human capital in terms of their employability. Hence, the intervention that forms the core of this empirical research can be a sustainable and promising human resource management (HRM) practice that fits the human capital agenda.

Despite decades of residence, Turkish-Dutch citizens, one of the largest immigrant groups in the Netherlands, continue to face significant disparities in health, social, and economic factors compared to native Dutch citizens. To better understand this persistent disparity, we examined the acculturation process of Turkish-Dutch citizens across three generations. Our study addressed two critical research gaps: (1) acculturation processes across three generations within a specific immigrant group, and (2) different acculturation domains across these generations. Data from 464 participants (232 Turkish-Dutch, 232 Dutch) show that acculturation varies significantly across generations (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) and domains (i.e., national identification, cultural values, language, and media use), with the second generation demonstrating the strongest resemblance to native Dutch citizens in most domains. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of acculturation processes and confirm the need for future research to consider generational differences and domain-specificity. The results have potential implications for policymakers and practitioners aiming to reduce disparities of Turkish-Dutch citizens with tailored policy and communication strategies.

Carboxylated cellulose is an important product on the market, and one of the most well-known examples is carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). However, CMC is prepared by modification of cellulose with the extremely hazardous compound monochloracetic acid. In this project, we want to make a carboxylated cellulose that is a functional equivalent for CMC using a greener process with renewable raw materials derived from levulinic acid. Processes to achieve cellulose with a low and a high carboxylation degree will be designed.
Mediabedrijven en -organisaties maken steeds meer gebruik van algoritmes om hun gebruikers gepersonaliseerde aanbevelingen aan te bieden voor artikelen, muziek, series, films en video’s. Dergelijke aanbevelingsalgoritmes maken gebruik van technieken uit kunstmatige intelligentie om te voorspellen in welke inhoud een gebruiker geïnteresseerd is, bijvoorbeeld op basis van wat de gebruiker eerder heeft bekeken of beluisterd of op basis van wat andere gebruikers hebben bekeken of beluisterd. Publieke omroepen, die programma’s maken voor kijkers en luisteraars, en de Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO), die in Nederland zorgt voor de distributie en uitzending van die programma’s, zien potentie in deze technologie. De NPO maakt nog slechts beperkt gebruik van automatische aanbevelingen om inhoud aan kijkers en luisteraars aan te bieden, maar zij verkent samen met een aantal partners uit het publieke omroepbestel de mogelijkheden om de technologie breder in te zetten. Anders dan de meeste mediabedrijven wordt de NPO wordt bekostigd door overheidsbudget en heeft het als expliciete missie om het Nederlandse publiek te verbinden en te verrijken met programma’s die informeren, inspireren en amuseren. Dit stelt andere eisen aan een aanbevelingsalgoritme. Waar het doel van commerciële partijen veelal bestaat uit het optimaliseren van winst en/of engagement, beoogt de NPO aanbevelingen te bieden op transparante en inzichtelijke wijze, en staat pluriformiteit (diversiteit in perspectieven) in aanbevelingen centraal. Op dit moment speelt bij de NPO de vraag welke principes (pluriformiteit, personalisatie, etc.) leidend moeten zijn in aanbevelingen en hoe deze principes geoperationaliseerd kunnen worden. Het doel van dit project is daarom om, middels literatuuronderzoek, interviews met experts en gebruikers, en prototyping, een aantal principes te identificeren en operationaliseren die geschikt zijn voor aanbevelingsalgoritmes van publieke omroepen.
Creating and testing the first Brand Segmentation Model in Augmented Reality using Microsoft Hololens. Sanoma together with SAMR launched an online brand segmentation tool based on large scale research, The brand model uses several brand values divided over three axes. However they cannot be displayed clearly in a 2D model. The space of BSR Quality Planner can be seen as a 3-dimensional meaningful space that is defined by the terms used to typify the brands. The third axis concerns a behaviour-based dimension: from ‘quirky behaviour’ to ‘standardadjusted behaviour’ (respectful, tolerant, solidarity). ‘Virtual/augmented reality’ does make it possible to clearly display (and experience) 3D. The Academy for Digital Entertainment (ADE) of Breda University of Applied Sciences has created the BSR Quality Planner in Virtual Reality – as a hologram. It’s the world’s first segmentation model in AR. Breda University of Applied Sciences (professorship Digital Media Concepts) has deployed hologram technology in order to use and demonstrate the planning tool in 3D. The Microsoft HoloLens can be used to experience the model in 3D while the user still sees the actual surroundings (unlike VR, with AR the space in which the user is active remains visible). The HoloLens is wireless, so the user can easily walk around the hologram. The device is operated using finger gestures, eye movements or voice commands.
