This paper reports on the EU-project 'Professionally Networking Education and Teacher Training' (PRONETT). The key objective of the PRONETT project (2001-2004) is to develop a regional and cross national learning community of pre- and in-service teachers and teacher educators supported by webbased resources and tools to collaborate and to construct shared understandings of teaching and learning in a networked classroom. The reasons for the initiative and the design principles of the PRONETT portal offering a virtual infrastructure for the collaboration of participating students and teachers at www.PRONETT.org are presented. The initial pilots carried out by the project partners are described, highlighting the co-ordinating partners activities targeted at contributing to the local realisation of ICT-rich, competence based Teacher Education Provision. Results are reported of the evaluation and implementation efforts aimed at validating the original portal design and collecting information to inspire further project development and implementation strategies. We conclude by summarising the lessons learned and providing recommendations for improved and extended use and further dissemination of the project results and facilities.
In most teacher training programs for Dutch mathematics teachers, history of mathematics is a required part of the curriculum. The courses provide historical background knowledge of certain mathematical developments to the students. This knowledge could also affect prospective teachers’ views on the nature of mathematics and the pedagogical choices they make for their classrooms. These effects have been examined in a small qualitative research project with two different groups of students from a teacher-training program in Amsterdam. The results are discussed in this paper and can be useful in describing and evaluating the relation between knowledge of history of mathematics and classroom activities.
Ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling richting een kennismaatschappij, vereisen voor het onderwijs de ontwikkeling van een praktijkgericht en vraaggestuurd onderwijsmodel (Meijers, 2006). Studieloopbaanbegeleiding (slb), gericht op het realiseren van een loopbaangerichte leeromgeving waarin zelfsturing centraal staat, is in het hoger beroepsonderwijs (hbo) sectorbreed ontwikkeld en ingezet als een belangrijk middel hierbij. Landelijk, kwantitatief onderzoek (Kuijpers & Meijers, 2009) heeft laten zien dat het realiseren een dergelijke leeromgeving geen sinecure is. Middels nader kwalitatief onderzoek is inzicht verkregen in de manier waarop drie best practice academies invulling hebben gegeven aan slb. Uit de resultaten, samengevat in dit artikel, blijkt het belang van continu leren door studenten én docenten. In vervolg hierop hebben we literatuuronderzoek verricht naar het begrip 'collectief leren' als een belangrijke vorm van het leren van docenten. Met behulp van vragenlijstonderzoek zijn we nagegaan in welke mate hbo-docenten deze vorm van leren herkennen in hun dagelijkse praktijk. ABSTRACT Developments in society, in particular the development towards a knowledge economy, require educational institutes to develop an educational model that is both practice- and inquiry-based (Meijers, 2006). In order to support this process, Career Guidance, aimed at creating a career-oriented learning environment where students have a say in their own learning processes, is widely introduced in the higher vocational education sector. However, results from national, quantitative research (Kuijpers & Meijers, 2009) have shown that it is difficult to realize such learning environment. In a follow-up qualitative study we gained insight in the way three 'best practice' academies, as identified in the study by Kuijpers and Meijers (2009), have successfully developed and organized their Career Guidance program. Results, summarized in the current article, point to the importance of continuous learning by both students and teachers. Sequel to this study we have performed a review of relevant literature in order to explore the concept 'collective learning' as an important form of teacher learning. By means of a questionnaire we have verified the extent to which teachers in higher vocational education teacher teams recognize this type of learning in their daily work practice.
Om tegemoet te komen aan de eisen die gesteld worden aan werknemers in de huidig snel veranderende samenleving heeft de NHL Stenden Hogeschool gekozen voor een nieuw onderwijsconcept, namelijk Design Based Education (DBE). DBE is gebaseerd op het gedachtegoed van Design Thinking en stimuleert iteratieve en creatieve denkprocessen. DBE is een student-georiënteerde leeromgeving, gebaseerd op praktijk-, dialoog-, en vraaggestuurde onderwijsprincipes en op zelfsturend, constructief, contextueel en samenwerkend leren. Studenten construeren gezamenlijk kennis en ontwikkelen een prototype voor een praktijkvraagstuk. Student-georiënteerde leeromgevingen vragen andere begeleidingsstrategieën van docenten dan zij gewend zijn. Van docenten wordt verwacht dat zij studenten activeren gezamenlijk kennis te construeren en dat zij nauw samenwerken met werkveldprofessionals. Eerder onderzoek toont aan dat docenten, zelfs in een student-georiënteerde leeromgeving, geneigd zijn terug te vallen op conventionele strategieën. De overstap naar een ander onderwijsconcept gaat dus blijkbaar niet vanzelf. Collectief leren stimuleert docenten de dialoog aan te gaan met andere docenten en werkveldprofessionals met als doel gezamenlijk te experimenteren en collectief te handelen. De centrale vraag van het postdoc-onderzoek is het ontwerpen en ontwikkelen van (karakteristieken van) interventies die collectief leren van docenten en werkveldprofessionals stimuleren. Het doel van het postdoconderzoek is om de overstap naar DBE zo probleemloos mogelijk te laten verlopen door docenten te ondersteunen DBE leeromgevingen te ontwikkelen in samenwerking met werkveldprofessionals en DBE te integreren in hun docentactiviteiten. De onderzoeksmethode is Educational Design Research en bestaat uit vier fasen: preliminair onderzoek, ontwikkelen van prototypes, evaluatie en bijdrage aan de praktijk. Het onderzoek is verbonden aan het lectoraat Sustainable Educational Concepts in Higher Education en wordt hiërarchisch en inhoudelijk aangestuurd door de lector. Docenten, experts, werkveldprofessionals en studenten worden betrokken bij het onderzoek. Dit onderzoek kan zowel binnen als buiten de hogeschool een bijdrage leveren omdat steeds meer hogescholen kiezen voor een ander onderwijsconcept.
Cross-Re-Tour supports European tourism SME while implementing digital and circular economy innovations. The three year project promotes uptake and replication by tourism SMEs of tools and solutions developed in other sectors, to mainstream green and circular tourism business operations.At the start of the project existing knowledge-gaps of tourism SMEs will be researched through online dialogues. This will be followed by a market scan, an overview of existing state of the art solutions to digital and green constraints in other economic sectors, which may be applied to tourism SME business operations: water, energy, food, plastic, transport and furniture /equipment. The scan identifies best practices from other sectors related to nudging of clients towards sustainable behaviour and nudging of staff on how to best engage with new tourism market segments.The next stage of the project relates to two design processes: an online diagnostic tool that allows for measuring and assessing (160) SME’s potential to adapt existing solutions in digital and green challenges, developed in other economic sectors. Next to this, a knowledge hub, addresses knowledge constraints and proposes solutions, business advisory services, training activities to SMEs participating. The hub acts as a matchmaker, bringing together 160 tourism SMEs searching for solutions, with suppliers of existing solutions developed in other sectors. The next key activity is a cross-domain open innovation programme, that will provide 80 tourism SMEs with financial support (up to EUR 30K). Examples of partnerships could be: a hotel and a supplier of refurbished matrasses for hospitals; a restaurant and a supplier of food rejected by supermarkets, a dance event organiser and a supplier of refurbished water bottles operating in the cruise industry, etc.The 80 cross-domain partnerships will be supported through the knowledge hub and their business innovation advisors. The goal is to develop a variety of innovative partnerships to assure that examples in all operational levels of tourism SMEs.The innovation projects shall be presented during a show-and-share event, combined with an investors’ pitch. The diagnostic tool, market scan, knowledge hub, as well as the show and share offer excellent opportunities to communicate results and possible impact of open innovation processes to a wider international audience of destination stakeholders and non-tourism partners. Societal issueSupporting the implementation of digital and circular economy solutions in tourism SMEs is key for its transition towards sustainable low-impact industry and society. Benefit for societySolutions are already developed in other sectors but the cross-over towards tourism is not happening. The project bridges this gap.
Receiving the first “Rijbewijs” is always an exciting moment for any teenager, but, this also comes with considerable risks. In the Netherlands, the fatality rate of young novice drivers is five times higher than that of drivers between the ages of 30 and 59 years. These risks are mainly because of age-related factors and lack of experience which manifests in inadequate higher-order skills required for hazard perception and successful interventions to react to risks on the road. Although risk assessment and driving attitude is included in the drivers’ training and examination process, the accident statistics show that it only has limited influence on the development factors such as attitudes, motivations, lifestyles, self-assessment and risk acceptance that play a significant role in post-licensing driving. This negatively impacts traffic safety. “How could novice drivers receive critical feedback on their driving behaviour and traffic safety? ” is, therefore, an important question. Due to major advancements in domains such as ICT, sensors, big data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), in-vehicle data is being extensively used for monitoring driver behaviour, driving style identification and driver modelling. However, use of such techniques in pre-license driver training and assessment has not been extensively explored. EIDETIC aims at developing a novel approach by fusing multiple data sources such as in-vehicle sensors/data (to trace the vehicle trajectory), eye-tracking glasses (to monitor viewing behaviour) and cameras (to monitor the surroundings) for providing quantifiable and understandable feedback to novice drivers. Furthermore, this new knowledge could also support driving instructors and examiners in ensuring safe drivers. This project will also generate necessary knowledge that would serve as a foundation for facilitating the transition to the training and assessment for drivers of automated vehicles.
