Civil society as a social sphere is constantly subjected to change. Using the Dutch context, this article addresses the question whether religiously inspired engagement is a binder or a breakpoint in modern societies. The author examines how religiously inspired people in the Netherlands involve themselves in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and voluntary activities. Religious involvement and social engagement in different European countries are compared and discussed. In addition, the author explores the models of civil society and applies these to both the Christian and Islamic civil society in the Netherlands. Using four religious ‘identity organizations’ as case studies, this article discusses the interaction of Christian and Islamic civil society related to secularized Dutch society. The character and intentions of religiously inspired organizations and the relationship between religious and secular involvement are examined. This study also focuses on the attitude of policymakers towards religiously inspired engagement and government policy on ‘identity organizations’ in the Netherlands.

The catalytic conversion of glycerol to aromatics (GTA, e.g., benzene, toluene, and xylenes, BTX) over a shaped H-ZSM-5/Al2O3 (60/40 wt%) catalyst was investigated in a continuous fixed-bed reactor to study the addition of the Al2O3 binder in the catalyst formulation on catalyst performance. The experiments were performed under N2 at 550 °C, a WHSV of glycerol (pure) of 1 h−1, and atmospheric pressure. The spent H-ZSM-5/Al2O3 catalysts were reused after an oxidative regeneration at 680 °C and in total 5 reaction-regeneration cycles were performed. Catalyst characterization studies show that the addition of the Al2O3 binder does not affect the surface area and crystallinity of the formulation, but increases the total pore volume (mesopores in particular) and total acidity (Lewis acidity in particular). The H-ZSM-5/Al2O3 (60/40 wt%) catalyst shows a considerably prolonged catalyst life-time (8.5 vs. 6.5 h for H-ZSM-5), resulting in a significant increase in the total BTX productivity (710 vs. 556 mg g−1 H-ZSM-5). Besides, the addition of the Al2O3 binder retards irreversible deactivation. For instance, after 3 regenerations, catalyst performance is comparable to the fresh one. However, after 4 regenerations, some irreversible catalyst deactivation occurs, associated with a reduction in total pore volume, crystallinity, and acidity (Brønsted acidity in particular), and meso-porosity of the Al2O3 binder. This study shows that both the stability and reusability of H-ZSM-5-based catalysts for GTA are remarkably enhanced when using a suitable binder.

The use of H-ZSM-5 with various binders (Al2O3, SiO2, and kaolinite, 10 wt% on catalyst formulation) for the catalytic conversion of glycerol to bio-based aromatics (GTA) was investigated in a continuous bench-scale unit at a pyrolysis temperature of 450 °C, catalytic upgrading temperature of 500 °C, WHSV of pure glycerol of 1 h−1, and atmospheric pressure, and their performance was compared to H-ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio of 28). The latter gave a peak BTX carbon yield of ca. 31.1C.%, a life-time of ca. 220 min, and a total BTX productivity of ca. 312 mg BTX g−1H-ZSM-5. The introduction of binders affects catalyst performance, which is the most profound and promising for the H-ZSM-5/Al2O3 catalyst. It shows a prolonged catalyst life-time of ca. 320 min and a higher total BTX productivity of ca. 518 mg BTX g−1H-ZSM-5, compared to the H-ZSM-5 without a binder. Catalyst characterization studies show that the addition of the binder does not have a major effect on the specific surface area, total pore volume, and total acidity. Other relevant properties were affected, though, such as micropore volume (SiO2), a reduced Brønsted acidity (Al2O3, and SiO2), and reduced crystallinity (SiO2). Coke formation causes severe catalyst deactivation, ultimately leading to an inactive catalyst for BTX formation. Catalyst characterization studies after an oxidative regeneration showed that the textural properties of the regenerated catalysts were close to those of the original catalysts. However, some dealumination of H-ZSM-5 occurs, resulting in decreased crystallinity and acidity, causing irreversible deactivation, which needs attention in future catalyst development studies.

The conductive textile grid is a large-scale (226 x 115 cm) multi-layer demonstrator exhibiting different conductive textile materials with certain outputs (such as LEDs, thermo-chromic ink and shape memory alloy) can be connected onto a base conductive fabric. Various conductive materials such as knitted patches, woven patches and 3D woven patches are attached on to the 2D base conductive fabric using different connectors. The objective is to determine the best way to electrically connect the various conductive textile patches, providing smooth transfer of current in each of the conductive patches of the base conductive fabric. The functioning of the outputs proved the transfer of electricity from the base fabric onto the conductive patches activating the outputs. The demonstrator constructed on semi-industrial scale has unique features and each of the components can be implemented integrally to develop different products of Smart textiles. from the article: "In this paper, we explore the characteristics of posters as an efficient and effective probing tool for hospital nurse participation in the development of processes, services or products. The main challenge in this respect is the limited time and attention available to nurses during their work shifts. For this, we analysed the design and effectiveness of posters from earlier projects and used existing knowledge on probing for preliminary guidelines focused on design elements, context of placement, and fit with work process. We then designed a poster for gathering insights during nurses’ work shifts into their administrative tasks and perceived relevance. To evaluate, this table poster design was consecutively placed on three nursing units in a Dutch hospital. Activities of nurses with the poster and necessary interventions were analysed and used for further insights into the characteristics of effective posters for this specific target group. The research raised new questions about how best to elicit nurses’ participation during work shifts."

Background: Malnutrition is an important cause of the excessive morbidity and mortality rate of dialysis patients. Frequent nocturnal home hemodialysis (NHHD) has many benefits compared with conventional thrice-weekly hemodialysis (CHD), due to the virtual absence of dietary restrictions and a much higher overall dialysis efficiency. In this observational study, we investigated whether these benefits of NHHD translate into an improved nutritional intake, with a special emphasis on protein intake. Methods: We prospectively assessed the effect of the transition of CHD to NHHD on nutritional intake (5-day dietary intake journal), normalized protein catabolic rate, and anthropometric parameters in 15 consecutive patients who started NHHD in our center between 2004 and 2009 and completed at least 8 months of follow-up. Data were collected before the transition from CHD to NHHD and 4 and 8 months after the transition. Results: Protein intake, as measured by both dietary intake journal and normalized protein catabolic rate, increased significantly after the transition from CHD to NHHD. Accordingly, phosphate intake increased significantly; however, serum phosphate levels did not increase, despite negligible phosphate binder use during NHHD. Body mass index and upper arm muscle circumference did not change significantly. Conclusion: The transition from CHD to NHHD has a positive effect on nutritional intake, in particular, protein intake. NHHD should be considered in malnourished patients on CHD. © 2012 National Kidney Foundation, Inc.

Op de HAS Hogeschool wordt al een aantal jaren voer voor vis en schaaldieren op basis van insecten vergeleken met regulier voer op basis van vismeel en/of visolie. Dit onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd in samenwerking met New Generation Nutrition. Resultaten laten zien dat garnalen gevoerd met voer op basis van insecten even goed groeien als bij regulier voer. Tot op heden is onbekend of het voer op basis van insecten gezondheidsrisico’s met zich meebrengt en dergelijk onderzoek komt na het aanstellen van Olga Haenen als lector Gezonde en Duurzame eiwitten in een stroomversnelling.
