This year, OPTIMAX was warmly welcomed by University College Dublin. For the sixth time students and teachers from Europe, South Africa, South America and Canada have come together enthusiastically to do research in the Radiography domain. As in previous years, there were several research groups consisting of PhD-, MSc- and BSc students and tutors from the OPTIMAX partner Universities or on invitation by partner Universities. OPTIMAX 2018 was partly funded by the partner Universities and partly by the participants.

Smart Materials, book of ideas is het resultaat van en unieke samenwerking. Deskundigen en leveranciers van smart materials, designers van drie Twentse ontwerpbureaus en studenten Industrieel Product Ontwerpen van Saxion twee intensieve dagen met veel plezier samengewerkt aan dit “Book of Ideas”. Het project “Smart Materials, Book of Ideas” is een van de deelprojecten van het RAAK project “Materialen in Ontwerp” dat van januari 2007 tot medio 2008 gelopen heeft bij het Saxion Kenniscentrum Design en Technologie. Het doel van dit project is het expliciet onder de aandacht brengen van de mogelijkheden van een nieuwe klasse materialen voor het MKB: de “Smart Materials”. Alles is “smart” tegenwoordig en iedereen heeft het over nieuwe mogelijkheden, maar over wat voor materialen en eigenschappen hebben we het eigenlijk? Het is de bedoeling niet alleen een droge opsomming te geven van de eigenschappen en mogelijkheden van smart materials. De mogelijkheden die deze nieuwe materialen kunnen bieden worden tastbaar gemaakt door allerlei creatieve toepassingen te laten zien in (verbeterde) bestaande producten en geheel nieuwe concepten. Op deze wijze wordt geïllustreerd hoe deze nieuwe materialen kunnen bijdragen aan de functionaliteit van een product. De creatieve toepassingen zijn het resultaat van de brainstorm-tweedaagse met materiaaldeskundigen, designers en studenten ‘Industrieel Product Ontwerpen’ (IPO). Met dit boekwerkje wil het Saxion Kenniscentrum Design en Technologie bereiken dat productontwerpers en met name het MKB geïnteresseerd raakt in de mogelijkheden die smart materials direct of in toekomst kunnen bieden. Er ligt voor de bedrijven een grote kans om met deze nieuwe materialen succesvolle innovatieve producten te ontwikkelen.

We present our ongoing work on upgrading the Amsterdam Public Library's book database search capabilities. So far, users have had to input the exact book title and/or author name without any typos or misspellings in order to retrieve any results. This is in sharp contrast with the manner in which users typically use the interface: they frequently search for books on a particular topic, input the names of the characters, or even ask fully-fledged questions. The aim of this project is therefore to enable smart search in natural language based on book content. The initial focus is on the Dutch language, with the possibility of including English and other languages later. In the first phase of the project, we built a proof-of-concept knowledge graph from a sample of the existing tabular database and enriched the data with named entities extracted from book summaries. Based on this first step, a user query like "Heeft u boeken over de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Amsterdam?" would yield all books that mention both WW2 and Amsterdam. We are currently working on augmenting the knowledge graph with embeddings, which will enable us to retrieve semantically similar results. The final step of the research involves integrating our knowledge graph with a pre-trained large language model.

Design and research are two fields of knowledge that each has its traditions, methods, standards and practices. These two worlds appear to be quite separate, with researchers investigating what exists, and designers visualising what could be. This book builds a bridge between both worlds by showing how design and research can be integrated to develop a new field of knowledge. This book contains 22 inspiring reflections that demonstrate how the unique qualities of research (aimed at studying the present) and design (aimed at developing the future) can be combined. This book shows that the transdisciplinary approach is applicable in a multitude of sectors, ranging from healthcare, urban planning, circular economy, and the food industry. Arranged in five parts, the book offers a range of illustrative examples, experiences, methods, and interpretations. Together they make up the characteristic of a mosaic, each piece contributing a part of the complete picture, and all pieces together offering a multi-facted perspective of what applied design research is, how it is implemented and what the reader can expect from it.

The Nature Spectacle: On Images, Money, and Conservation Capitalism by Jim Igoe is, as its Preface states, an ambitious book that seeks to make connections between diverse times and places. The preface also, in many ways, tells more about the background and intention of the book than its chapters do, tying together the author’s origins and motivation. Igoe recalls his childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, much of which he spent “in front of a television and at a neighborhood movie theatre” (p. XII), once watching a musical, which was “essentially an extended Chevrolet commercial set among the geysers of Yellowstone” (P. 109). It is the mix of such absurd and comical observations of commercialism merging with Nature, and much heavier criticism of the capitalist cult of economic growth, development, and also conservation that characterizes The Nature of Spectacle. Much of Igoe’s outdoor experiences were shaped by green spaces, created in St. Louis as part of commodity exhibits at the 1904 World’s Fair. The author admits to feeling both critical and nostalgic of those places that have merged (sub)urban aesthetics with that of industrially developed commercial “spaces” (p. In this book of examples we present possible implementations of straightforward and manageable climate-resilient ideas and options for residential streets. Examples from ordinary Dutch street views show how climate resilience can be implemented with simple solutions and how this does not need to be more costly than traditional measures, particularly in flat areas (such as we often find in the Netherlands). This observation is based on comparative studies across various Dutch cities. We hope that the examples will inspire you to find ways to implementclimate-resilient measures in your city, because the climate is right up your street.
