Objective: To gain insight into how communication vulnerable people and health-care professionals experience the communication in dialogue conversations, and how they adjust their conversation using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) or other communication strategies. Methods: Communication vulnerable clients and health-care professionals in a long-term care institution were observed during a dialogue conversation (n = 11) and subsequently interviewed (n = 22) about their experiences with the conversation. The clients had various communication difficulties due to different underlying aetiologies, such as acquired brain injury or learning disorder. Results from the observations and interviews were analysed using conventional content analysis. Results: Seven key themes emerged regarding the experiences of clients and professionals: clients blame themselves for miscommunications; the relevance of both parties preparing the conversation; a quiet and familiar environment benefitting communication; giving clients enough time; the importance and complexity of nonverbal communication; the need to tailor communication to the client; prejudices and inexperience regarding AAC. The observations showed that some professionals had difficulties using appropriate communication strategies and all professionals relied mostly on verbal or nonverbal communication strategies. Conclusion: Professionals were aware of the importance of preparation, sufficient time, a suitable environment and considering nonverbal communication in dialogue conversations. However, they struggled with adequate use of communication strategies, such as verbal communication and AAC. There is a lack of knowledge about AAC, and professionals and clients need to be informed about the potential of AAC and how this can help them achieve equal participation in dialogue conversations in addition to other communication strategies.
This research was conducted to update the content of the International Business Studies curriculum. The dynamically developing business environment, including the shift towards hybrid work, deepened the widely reported misalignment between business communication instruction and industry requirements. Thus, we resolved to discover what this misalignment entails and will present the employers’ unmet needs concerning recent graduates’ communication skills.

Enhancing communication performance skills may help children with Down Syndrome (DS) to expand their opportunities for participation in daily life. It is a clinical challenge for speech-language pathologists (SLP) to disentangle various mechanisms that contribute to the language and communication problems that children with DS encounter. Without clarity of different levels of functioning, appropriate interventions may be poorly conceived or improperly implemented. In the present study, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health – Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY) framework was used to classify contributing factors to communication performance in a multiple case study of six young children with DS. Within a comprehensive assessment, we identified individual and environmental facilitators and barriers, leading to an integrative profile of communication performance (IPCP) for each child. Whereas these six children shared a developmental, and/or expressive vocabulary age and/or level of communicative intent, the children faced similar but also unique personal and environmental factors that play an important role in their communication performance. Our data reveal that a combination of different factors may lead to the same language outcomes and vice versa, based on a unique pattern of interdependency of ICF-CY domains. Planning SLP interventions for enhancing communication performance in children with DS should therefore be based on a comprehensive view on the competences and limitations of every individual child and its significant communication partners. This evaluation should address facilitators and barriers in body functions, structures, activities, participation and environment, with a specific focus on individual strengths. The ICF-CY provides a useful framework for constructing an IPCP that serves this purpose.

Het lectoraat Applied Quantum Computing is een samenwerking tussen de Hogeschool van Amsterdam en het Centrum Wiskunde en Informatica. Dit lectoraat gaat zich bezig houden met het leggen van een verbinding tussen enerzijds fundamenteel onderzoek en anderzijds praktische problemen. In een samenwerking met IBM, Capgemini en Qusoft zullen cases en experimenten worden uitgevoerd hoe Quantum Computing bedrijven gaat beïnvloeden. Op het gebied van Quantum Communication zal onderzocht worden hoe m.b.v. Quantum Technologie gekomen kan worden tot een veilige communicatie. Ook zal aangesloten worden bij onderzoek naar en onderwijs worden ontwikkeld rondom hoe quantum mechanische effecten praktisch ingezet kunnen worden om metingen te verrichten. Onderzoek zal verricht worden naar het implementeren van theoretische oplossingen als bedacht in de laboratoria van universiteiten voor problemen bij bedrijven en instellingen. Binnen de Hogeschool van Amsterdam zal aansluiting worden gezocht met het onderzoek dat wordt gedaan binnen diverse lectoraten van de Faculteit DMCI, zoals responsible IT (i.o) en Urban Analytics en met de onderzoekers van de groep Urban Technology van de faculteit Techniek. In het onderwijs wordt een relatie bestendigd met opleidingen als HBO-ICT, waarvoor een minor wordt ontwikkeld, en Technische Natuurkunde. Daarbuiten zal verder gewerkt worden aan een netwerk om te komen tot een ecosysteem van instellingen en bedrijven. De Hogeschool van Amsterdam draagt Marten Teitsma als lector voor. Marten Teitsma heeft heeft veel ervaring in het onderwijs, ontwikkeling daarvan, als leidinggevende en is gepromoveerd in de Artificiële Intelligentie. Binnen de hogeschool heeft hij het initiatief genomen tot diverse activiteiten op het gebied van Quantum Computing.
In de subsidieaanvraag van de gemeente Hoogeveen in het kader van de aardgasvrije wijken is een bedrag van €75K opgenomen voor een bewonersmonitor uitgevoerd door het lectoraat Communication, Behaviour & the Sustainable Society van EnTranCe.
