Wereldwijd onderzoek: Hoe gebruiken nieuwsmedia social media? Jongeren lezen geen krant meer, ze kijken op hun smartphone die ze altijd bij de hand hebben. Binnen het lectoraat social media en reputatiemanagement van NHL hogeschool te Leeuwarden heeft een groep internationale studenten in 12 landen onderzoek gedaan. Hierbij hebben ze meer dan 150 social media sites bestudeerd van nieuws media. De resultaten maken deel uit van een internationaal onderzoek van NHL Hogeschool en Haaga Helia University. De onderzoeksvraag was: Wat speelt zich af in de nieuwsmedia? Persbureaus kunnen het overzicht gebruiken om hun social media te optimaliseren. This article starts from the observation that popular culture resides in a contradictory space. On the one hand it seems to be thriving, in that the range of media objects that were previously studied under the rubric of popular culture has certainly expanded. Yet, cultural studies scholars rarely study these media objects as popular culture. Instead, concerns about immaterial labor, about the manipulation of voting behavior and public opinion, about filter bubbles and societal polarization, and about populist authoritarianism, determine the dominant frames with which the contemporary media environment is approached. This article aims to trace how this change has come to pass over the last 50 years. It argues that changes in the media environment are important, but also that cultural studies as an institutionalizing interdisciplinary project has changed. It identifies “the moment of popular culture” as a relatively short-lived but epoch-defining moment in cultural studies. This moment was subsequently displaced by a set of related yet different theoretical problematics that gradually moved the study of popular culture away from the popular. These displacements are: the hollowing out of the notion of the popular, as signaled early on by Meaghan Morris’ article “The Banality of Cultural Studies” in 1988; the institutionalization of cultural studies; the rise of the governmentality approach and a growing engagement with affect theory.

This is the introduction to a special issue on media and transgression, one of early cultural studies’ key terms. It inquires into the uses of transgression as a critical concept to query contemporary media culture which is discussed in six case studies: on political satire, Mukbang, cult drama, the policing of film piracy, media scandals, and online trolls. Transgression points to the energy that fuels the media ecology – from content and content production to audience practices and the policing of content ownership. It is the (conscious) overstepping of moral and legal boundaries, that challenges written and unwritten rules. The frisson of rule breaking and the reward of rule re-establishment (whether by powerful parties or everyday gossip) are transgression’s bookends. Together they support the cyclical rhythm of media culture that maintains not just our interest as viewers but our interests and connectedness as citizens, whether in celebration, outrage or condemnation.

In tijden van toenemende culturele diversiteit en arbeidsonzekerheid hebben jongeren in Nederlandse en Duitse stadswijken grote behoefte aan richting met betrekking tot hun toekomstige leven. Ouders en leraren lijken zelf vaak te worden overweldigd door de snel veranderende wereld waarin ze leven. Naast deze veranderingen neemt het gebruik van sociale media sterk toe, waardoor de al bestaande generatiekloof nog groter wordt. Deze ontwikkelingen hebben grote gevolgen voor de levensloopperspectieven van jongeren en leiden er vaak toe dat ze meer dan ooit richting zoeken bij hun leeftijdgenoten. In plaats van dit te zien als een problematische situatie, is dit project erop gericht de netwerken van jongeren te gebruiken als bron voor verbetering van de stadswijken. Het basisidee is jonge adolescenten (in de leeftijd van 12-14 jaar) te empoweren via bepaalde leeftijdgenoten die al gerespecteerd, verantwoordelijk en stabiel in het leven staan. Deze ‘homies’ (vier Nederlandse en vier Duitse jongeren) worden getraind en begeleid door experts op het gebied van oplossingsgericht denken en inspirerende communicatie. Daarna gaan de homies aan de slag in hun eigen wijk, waar ze drie maanden actief zullen zijn. De meeste communicatie met hun leeftijdgenoten zal verlopen via mobiele communicatie en sociale medianetwerken. In het begeleidende onderzoek wordt een analyse gemaakt van de leefsituatie van jongeren in de geselecteerde wijken voor en na de tussenkomst van de homies. De homies houden zelf een (mobiel) dagboek bij dat inzicht zal bieden in hoe zij zelf de veranderingen bij de jongeren in hun wijk zien.
Met het onderzoek Co-creatie, kunst & media en kwetsbare ouderen wil Saskia van de Ree de voorwaarden van het co-creatieve proces van participatieve kunst & mediaprojecten duiden. Als casus is gekozen voor het project Domweg gelukkig in Groningen van Samen in Beeld-TV. Dit Groningse mediaproject maakt televisie met, voor en door ouderen om eenzaamheid aan te pakken. Door de benadering van het werkproces vanuit het meervoudige perspectief van onderliggende ethische, economische, artistieke en sociale aspecten, toetst onderzoeker Saskia van de Ree een door haar ontworpen hybride theoretisch kader op deze concrete participatieve kunst & media- praktijk. Het onderzoek belicht de meervoudigheid van waardecreatie in de sociaal artistieke praktijk en duidt de werkwijze in termen van : 1) de empowerment van kwetsbare groepen 2) waardering van het project in termen van draagvlak en borging 3) kunst en media als ontmoeting/katalysator en 4) co-creatie als een vorm van samen werken en leren. Het onderzoek valt onder de onderzoekslijn Art & Dementia van het lectoraat Image in Context (Academie Minerva, Hanzehogeschool Groningen) en wordt begeleid door dr Anke Coumans.
Connecting Otherwise is an artistic/design research project initiated by The Hmm and the research department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Sandberg Instituut, alongside a consortium of invited stakeholders from the creative industries and research institutions such as Small File Media Festival, Hackers & Designers, and Stichting LINK. It focuses on the development of interdisciplinary workshop formats exploring regenerative aesthetics and the materiality of digital technologies through hands-on and collective research approaches. Drawing on feminist and decolonial hacking principles and critical making, the project's aim is to make tangible and reimagine digital materiality while resisting extractive tendencies. Promoting regenerative design principles, it addresses the environmental impact of digital technologies and resource depletion, emphasizing art and design’s role in tackling these challenges. We believe the intersectional character of such challenges requires collective and interdisciplinary approaches to design and art making, which are rarely fostered conceptually and practically within the creative industries and educational institutions. The workshops build upon the expertise of the collaborating partners, who bring together art, design, technology, and education and have been instrumental in bridging art and science, supporting artists and designers in contributing to interdisciplinary research environments. Via a series of interconnected workshops the project will engage art and design professionals, educators, and students in material-based research around the social and environmental impact of digital technologies. Participants will explore circuit-making through community craft traditions, embrace ‘slowness’ and ‘lowness’ as frugal and regenerative principles for digital design and art making, and use weaving as a framework for exploring interconnected digital and territorial relationships. The aim is to creatively and critically examine the challenges that (future) art and design practitioners in the creative industries face when building and participating in contemporary digital culture in ways that are both sustainable and equitable.
