This paper presents the latest version of the Machinations framework. This framework uses diagrams to represent the flow of tangible and abstract resources through a game. This flow represents the mechanics that make up a game’s interbal economy and has a large impact on the emergent gameplay of most simulation games, strategy games and board games. This paper shows how Machinations diagrams can be used simulate and balance games before they are built.
In the face of a global ecological crisis, culturally dominant framings of subjective experience as separate from living ecologies are no longer sufficient. Games might offer ways to break down these divisions. Alenda Chang has proposed bringing game ecologies to life. To complement her position, in this paper, we aim to inspire game designers and researchers to explore ways in which video games can remodel the perceived player subject as a pathway to ecological entanglement. We investigate four strategies for decentering and deconstructing the subject. These are: (1) deconstructing the subject to foreground internal sources of entanglement; (2) dismantling, distorting, ignoring, and/or invading the visual perspective; (3) conceptual deconstruction and reframing of a sense of self; and (4) decentering the subject through shifting contexts. For each of these, we introduce relevant examples of narrative and gameplay design in existing video games and suggest steps for further development in each direction.
Dutch National Sports Organizations (NSFs) is currently experiencing financial pressures. Two indications for this are described in this paper i.e. increased competition in the sports sector and changes in subsidy division. Decreasing incomes from subsidies can be compensated with either increasing incomes from a commercial domain or increasing incomes from member contributions. This latter solution is gaining interest as a solution for the uncertainties. Many NSFs have therefore participated in a special marketing program in order to enlarge their marketing awareness and create a marketing strategy, in order to (re)win market share on the sports participation market and gain a more stable financial situation. This paper introduces my research related to the introduction of marketing techniques within NSFs and the change-over to become market oriented. An overview of existing literature about creating marketing strategies, their implementation, and market orientation is given. This outline makes obvious that the existing literature is not sufficient for studying the implementation of marketing techniques and market orientation within NSFs. Therefore, it shows the scientific relevance of my research. The paper concludes with the chosen research methodology.
The latest IPCC Report (2022) provided by the UN shows us that, to guarantee a safe future for upcoming generations, we must change how we lead our lives on several levels. However, the increasing urgency to act and behave in a way that is not damaging the climate is bringing many psychological concerns to young generations. Worldwide reports are demonstrating how the issue of eco-anxiety is increasing daily, and how young people are feeling more hopeless than ever. Climate change has become a climate crisis, and individuals are experiencing pressure and fear incessantly (Marks et al., 2021). We, as Climate Streamers, have often found ourselves in this situation as well, but rather than freezing, we decided to take this challenge and think of solutions. Therefore, with the support of Breda University of Applied Sciences, the Performatory community, the BUas Startup Support Team, and outside mentors, we created Climate Streamers Foundation: a new youth-led non-profit organisation and a movement working towards a more inclusive and less polarised climate action. By working with leisure elements and a positive and appreciative approach, we want to give back hope, voice and power to the youth and inspire each other genuinely and sustainably. The purpose of this application is to allow us to elaborate a feasibility study concerning our MVP (minimum viable product), the card game, and boost the overall concept. We intend to implement the researched data to improve the design and sales management. The card game aims to stimulate appreciative conversations by giving space to players to express their opinions and personal stories and it is designed so everyone can play it, regardless of background and knowledge. After giving 200 games in production, we launched the card game in July 2022.
Kinderen met een autisme spectrum stoornis (ASS) kunnen zich vaak moeilijk in anderen verplaatsen en hebben moeite met sociale interactie. In de behandeling van kinderen met ASS wordt ingezet op het trainen van deze sociale vaardigheden (SoVa). SoVa-trainingen hebben echter te weinig effect. Het probleem van de huidige sociale vaardigheidstraining (SoVa) is enerzijds het gebrek aan motivatie bij kinderen met ASS om de training vol te houden en anderzijds de beperkte toepassing van dat wat in de SoVa training wordt geleerd naar het dagelijks leven. Zorgprofessionals concluderen dat aanpassing van de werkvormen gewenst is en hiervoor is een innovatieve blik nodig. De professionals willen nadrukkelijk kijken naar de inzet van digitale toepassingen. Om het effect van de SoVa-trainingen te vergroten wordt in dit project een zgn. Behaviour Change Support System (BCSS) ontwikkeld. Dit BCSS zal bestaan uit een aantal (digitale) toepassingen die met elkaar een logisch samenhangend geheel vormen, passend bij de doelen en methodische kaders die professionals hanteren in de SoVa-trainingen. De toepassingen moeten een set van op maat aan te bieden interventies zijn, gericht op belangrijke c.q. vaak benodigde vaardigheden in sociale interactie. Naast de ontwikkeling van het BCSS richt het project zich ook op het delen van kennis die gegenereerd wordt gedurende het ontwikkelproces van dit BCSS. Het project is een samenwerkingsverband tussen de lectoraten Zorg voor Jeugd, Zorg & Innovatie in de Psychiatrie en iHuman (NHL Hogeschool), het lectoraat User- Centered Design (Hanzehogeschool) en het lectoraat ICT innovatie in de Zorg (Windesheim). Daarnaast wordt samengewerkt met zorgaanbieders van kinder en jeugdpsychiatrie in Noord Nederland (Accare, Kinnik en GGZ Drenthe), diverse scholen basis- en voortgezet onderwijs in Noord-Nederland, het RGOc, de RUG en het kenniscentrum Kinder en Jeugdpsychiatrie. De ontwikkeling van de digitale toepassingen wordt gedaan door 8Dgames.
The growing use of digital media has led to a society with plenty of new opportunities for knowledge exchange, communication and entertainment, but also less desirable effects like fake news or cybercrime. Several studies, however, have shown that children are less digital literate than expected. Digital literacy has consequently become a key part within the new national educational policy plans titled Curriculum.nu and the Dutch research and policy agendas. This research project is focused on the role the game sector can play in the development of digital literacy skills of children. In concrete, we want to understand the value of the use of digital literacy related educational games in the context of primary education. Taking into consideration that the childhood process of learning takes place through playing, several studies claim that the introduction of the use of technology at a young age should be done through play. Digital games seem a good fit but are themselves also part of digital media we want young people to be literate about. Furthermore, it needs to be taken into account that digital literacy of teachers can be limited as well. The interactive, structured nature of digital games offers potential here as they are less dependent on the support and guidance of an adult, but at the same time this puts even more emphasis on sensible game design to ensure the desired outcome. The question is, then, if and how digital games are best designed to foster the development of digital literacy skills. By harnessing the potential of educational games, a consortium of knowledge and practice partners aim to show how creating theoretical and practical insights about digital literacy and game design can aid the serious games industry to contribute to the societal challenges concerning contemporary literacy demands.
