The potential for Artificial Intelligence is widely proclaimed. Yet, in everyday educational settings the use of this technology is limited. Particularly, if we consider smart systems that actually interact with learners in a knowledgeable way and as such support the learning process. It illustrates the fact that teaching professionally is a complex challenge that is beyond the capabilities of current autonomous robots. On the other hand, dedicated forms of Artificial Intelligence can be very good at certain things. For example, computers are excellent chess players and automated route planners easily outperform humans. To deploy this potential, experts argue for a hybrid approach in which humans and smart systems collaboratively accomplish goals. How to realize this for education? What does it entail in practice? In this contribution, we investigate the idea of a hybrid approach in secondary education. As a case-study, we focus on learners acquiring systems thinking skills and our recently for this purpose developed pedagogical approach. Particularly, we discuss the kind of Artificial Intelligence that is needed in this situation, as well as which tasks the software can perform well and which tasks are better, or necessarily, left with the teacher.

Mapping Microplastics was a first exploratory workshop (part of the Entrepreneurship Program at HvA) with researchers and entrepreneurs to map how the public discourse on microplastics develops on Twitter.The preparation of this workshop followed a hybrid approach in three steps: preliminary mapping, joint interpretation and annotation, map redesign and feedback. The preliminary mapping was performed by designing a query to collect tweets around the topic of Microplastics. To perform the data collection and preliminary analysis we used TCAT (Twitter Capturing and Analysis Toolset), a tool developed by the Digital Methods Initiative at the University of Amsterdam. A set of four maps was designed to address different sub questions through different visual models: networks of hashtags and users, image grids organized by time and frequency, alluvial diagrams and lists of most interacted with tweets. These maps were used in a joint interpretative hybrid session: the visual material was printed and sent to each partner. With the facilitation of designers and researchers, entrepreneurs annotated the printed maps in parallel online sessions.

We report research into the evolvement of a hybrid learning environment where education, companies and government successfully cooperate. This hybrid learning environment—one of the latest inventions in curriculum design—is special because it was neither intended nor planned by the parties involved. With some self-astonishment, the participants in this research experienced a growing acknowledgement of their emerging educational creation, aside from the experience of and appreciation for their cooperation and the increasing turnover. With a bricolage research approach within the scope of a rhizomatic perspective on becoming, a multivocal perspective on the evolvement of the learning environment was pursued. In emphasizing the historical evolvement of the learning environment, our findings challenge the tradition of drawing board design, accompanied by an appeal for re-appreciating professional craftsmanship. In addition, some reflections regarding the research are discussed.

This article examines the network structure, criminal cooperation, and external interactions of cybercriminal networks. Its contribution is empirical and inductive. The core of this study involved carrying out 10 case analyses on closed cybercrime investigations – all with financial motivations on the part of the offenders - in the UK and beyond. Each analysis involved investigator interview and access to unpublished law enforcement files. The comparison of these cases resulted in a wide range of findings on these cybercriminal networks, including: a common division between the scam/attack components and the money components; the presence of offline/local elements; a broad, and sometimes blurred, spectrum of cybercriminal behaviour and organisation. An overarching theme across the cases that we observe is that cybercriminal business models are relatively stable.

This paper is a result of the project News, networks, and users in the hybrid media system. Transformation of media industries and the news in the post-industrial era (RTI2018-095775-B-C43). We present our insights on the latest movements of the Spanish media industry and their influence in the conception of news production during 2020. Specifically, we focus on the implementation of news business models, namely paywalls and membership models, and the movements regarding intellectual property to protect the industry – and their impact on journalists as well. The irruption of the COVID-19 pandemics has accelerated some tendencies in this respect.

It outlines the previous work of the ATLAS Events Group in developing a “network approach to events,” as well as conceptualizing the differences between event networks and platforms.

Consumers expect product availability as well as product quality and safety in retail outlets. When designing or re-designing fruit and vegetables supply chain networks one has to take these demands into consideration next to traditional efficiency and responsiveness requirements. In food science literature, much attention has been paid to the development of Time-Temperature Indicators to monitor individually the temperature conditions of food products throughout distribution as well as quality decay models that are able to predict product quality based upon this information. This chapter discusses opportunities to improve the design and management of fruit and vegetables supply chain networks. If product quality in each step of the supply chain can be predicted in advance, good flows can be controlled in a pro-active manner and better chain designs can be established resulting in higher product availability, higher product quality, and less product losses in retail. This chapter works towards a preliminary diagnostic instrument, which can be used to assess supply chain networks on QCL (Quality Controlled Logistics). Findings of two exploratory case studies, one on the tomato chain and one on the mango chain, are presented to illustrate the value of this concept. Results show the opportunities and bottlenecks for quality controlled logistics depend on product—(e.g. variability in quality), process—(e.g. ability to use containers and sort on quality), network- (e.g. current level of cooperation), and market characteristics (e.g. higher prices for better products).

Global awareness on energy consumption and the environmental impacts of fossil fuels boost actions and create more supportive policies towards sustainable energy systems, in the last energy outlook, by the International Energy Agency, it was forecasted totals of 3600 GW from 2016 to 2040 of global deployment of renewables sources (RES), covering 37% of the power generation. While the Natural Gas overtake the coal demand in the energy mix, growing around 50%, manly by more efficiency system and the use of LNG for long-distance gas trades. The energy infrastructure will be more integrated, deploying decentralized and Hybrid Energy Networks (HEN).This transformation on the energy mix leads to new challenges for the energy system, related to the uncertainty and variability of RES, such as: Balancing flexibility, it means having sufficient resources to accommodate when variable production increase and load levels fall (or vice versa). And Efficiency in traditional fired plants, the often turn on and off or modify their output levels to accommodate changes in variable demand, can result in a decrease in efficiency, particularly from thermal stresses on equipment. This paper focus in the possibility to offer balancing resources from the LNG regasification, while ensure an efficient system.In order to asses this issue, using the energy Hub concept a model of a distributed HEN was developed. The HEN consist in a Waste to Energy plant (W2E), a more sustainable case of Combine Heat and Power (CHP) coupled with a LNG cold recovery regasification. To guarantee a most efficiency operation, the HEN was optimized to minimized the Exergy efficiency, additionally, the system is constrained by meeting Supply with variable demand, putting on evidence the sources of balancing flexibility. The case study show, the coupled system increases in overall exergy efficiency from 25% to 35% compared to uncoupled system; it brings additional energy between 1.75 and 3 MW, and it meets variable demand in the most exergy efficient with power from LNG reducing inputs of other energy carriers. All this indicated that LNG cold recovery in regasification coupled other energy systems is as promising tool to support the transition towards sustainable energy systems.

The future energy system could benefit from the integration of independent gas, heat and electricity infrastructures. Such a hybrid energy network could support the increase of intermittent renewable energy sources by offering increased operational flexibility. Nowadays, the expectations on Natural Gas resources forecast an increase in the application of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), as a means of storage and transportation, which has a high exergy value. Therefore, we analyzed the integration of decentralized LNG regasification with a Waste-to-Energy (W2E) plant for a practice-based case to get an idea on how it might affect the balancing of supply and demand, under optimized exergy efficient conditions. We compared an independent system with an integrated system that consists of the use of the LNG cold to cool the condenser of the W2E plant, as well as the expansion of the regasified LNG in an expander, using a simplified deterministic model based on the energy hub concept. We use the hourly measured electricity and heat demand patterns for 200 households with 35% of the households producing electricity from PV according to a typical measured solar insolation pattern in The Netherlands. The results indicate that the integration affects the imbalance for electricity and heat compared to the independent system. If the electricity demand is met, both the total yearly heat shortage and heat excess are reduced for the integrated system. If the heat demand is met, the total yearly electricity shortage is also reduced (with 100 MWh). However, the total yearly electricity excess is then increased (with 300 MWh). We observed that these changes are solely due to the increase in exergy efficiencies for heat and electricity of the W2E Rankine cycle. The efficiency of the expander is too low to offer a significant contribution to the electricity demand. Therefore, future research should focus on the affect that can be obtained by to other means of integration (e.g. Organic Rankine Cycle and Stirling Cycle).

This report has been established within the Flexiheat project. Flexiheat has focused on increasing flexibility in district heating systems. The intelligent district heating network is a dynamic network: an open network where different waste heat and renewable energy sources are connected, that has multiple producers and groups of consumers and facilitates the connection between different energy infrastructures (gas, heat and electricity). Eventually this will lead to an optimal deployment of the available heat sources and an increased cost-efficiency of district heating. Flexiheat aims to develop new concepts for these intelligent, flexible district heating networks. One of the strategies is to allow third party access to the network. A smart control system is developed to manage the heat flows across the network. This system makes use of dynamic pricing. In this exploration the concept of third party access in relation to the Flexiheat project will be discussed. The development of new business and price models based on the Flexiheat approach has led to an analysis of possible alternative price models for consumers.
