Little research exists on what works in the supervision of offenders with debt problems. This qualitative study aims to provide insight into the barriers probation officers and clients experience during supervision regarding debt and the support that clients need. Interviews were conducted with 33 Dutch probation officers and 16 clients. The results show that debt often negatively influences clients’ lives and hinders their resocialization. Probation officers lack effective methods to support clients with debt problems. To adequately help clients with debt problems, probation officers should obtain more knowledge about effective interventions and collaborate more closely with debt specialists from the probation supervision outset.
The aim of this study is to contribute to the body of knowledge on the use of contextual mathematical problems. Word problems are a predominant genre in mathematics classrooms in assessing students’ ability to solve problems from everyday life. Research on word problems, however, reveals a range of difficulties in their use in mathematics education. In our research we took an alternative approach: we designed image-rich numeracy problems as alternatives for word problems. A set of word problems was modified by systematically replacing the descriptive representation of the problem situation by a more depictive representation and an instrument was designed to measure the effect of this modification on students’ performance. The instrument can measure the effect of this alternative approach in a randomized controlled trial. In order to use the instrument at scale, we made this instrument also usable as a diagnostic test for an upcoming nationwide examination on numeracy. In this article we explain and discuss the design of the instrument and the validation of its intended uses.
Our unilateral diet has resulted in a deficiency of specific elements/components needed for well-functioning of the human body. Especially the element magnesium is low in our processed food and results in neuronal and muscular malfunctioning, problems in bone heath/strength, and increased chances of diabetes, depression and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, it has also been recognized that magnesium plays an important role in cognitive functioning (impairment and enhancement), especially for people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson disease, Alzheimer, etc). Recently, it has been reported that magnesium addition positively effects sleep and calmness (anti-stress). In order to increase the bioavailability of magnesium cations, organic acids such as citrate, glycerophosphate and glycinate are often used as counterions. However, the magnesium supplements that are currently on the market still suffer from low bio-availability and often do not enter the brain significantly.The preparation of dual/multiple ligands of magnesium in which the organic acid not only functions as a carrier but also has synergistically/complementary biological effects is widely unexplored and needs further development. As a result, there is a strong need for dual/multiple magnesium supplements that are non-toxic, stable, prepared via an economically and ecologically attractive route, resulting in high bioavailability of magnesium in vivo, preferably positively influencing cognition/concentration
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a pattern of alcohol use that involves having trouble controlling drinking behaviour, even when it causes health issues (addiction) or problems functioning in daily (social and professional) life. Moreover, festivals are a common place where large crowds of festival-goers experience challenges refusing or controlling alcohol and substance use. Studies have shown that interventions at festivals are still very problematic. ARise is the first project that wants to help prevent AUD at festivals using Augmented Reality (AR) as a tool to help people, particular festival visitors, to say no to alcohol (and other substances). ARise is based on the on the first Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy (ARET) in the world that we developed for clinical treatment of AUD. It is an AR smartphone driven application in which (potential) visitors are confronted with virtual humans that will try to seduce the user to accept an alcoholic beverage. These virtual humans are projected in the real physical context (of a festival), using innovative AR glasses. Using intuitive phone, voice and gesture interactions, it allows users to personalize the safe experience by choosing different drinks and virtual humans with different looks and levels of realism. ARET has been successfully developed and tested on (former) AUD patients within a clinical setting. Research with patients and healthcare specialists revealed the wish to further develop ARET as a prevention tool to reach people before being diagnosed with AUD and to extend the application for other substances (smoking and pills). In this project, festival visitors will experience ARise and provide feedback on the following topics: (a) experience, (b) awareness and confidence to refuse alcohol drinks, (c) intention to use ARise, (d) usability & efficiency (the level of realism needed), and (e) ideas on how to extend ARise with new substances.
Een vraagarticulatieproces met projectmanagers en -leiders uit private en Triple-Helix organisaties laat zien dat zij behoefte hebben aan tools voor: 1. Het bepalen van de juiste incentives om stakeholders actief te betrekken in multi-sector collaboratieve innovatieprojecten (verder verwezen als innovatieprojecten), en 2. Het concreet, transparant en op één lijn te krijgen van de belangen van de partners. Vandaar dat dit project betreft het doorontwikkelen van het Degrees of Engagement diagram (DoE-diagram), een tool voor het managen van stakeholder engagement in innovatieprojecten voor het behalen van de maatschappelijke opgaven. Hiermee sluit het project aan bij de programmalijn ‘rollen, belangen en coördinatie’ van de Kennis en Innovatieagenda van de missie Maatschappelijke Verdienvermogen- thema’s Klimaat & Energie en Circulaire economie. Het consortium bestaat uit de Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), KplusV en Amsterdam Smart City (ASC). De HvA ontwikkelde het DoE-diagram. Voor het identificeren van stakeholders bevat het DoE-diagram attributen op project- en organisatieniveau. In dit project wordt het DoE doorontwikkeld door onderzoek te doen naar: 1. De attributen op individuniveau en potentiele nieuwe attributen op project- en organisatieniveau, 2. De mate waarin deze attributen invloed hebben op het bepalen van de passende incentives, de concretisering van de partnerbelangen en al dan niet succesvolle verloop van innovatieprojecten, 3. Een verkenning van een digitale versie van het DoE voor het managen van in- en uitstappen van partners. Hiermee beoogt het project twee doelen: 1. Inzicht verkrijgen in stakeholderconfiguraties voor het ondersteunen van beslissingen met betrekking tot stakeholder-engagement, 2. Bouwen van een consortium van partijen die vervolg aan het project gaan geven door longitudinaal onderzoek te doen naar de inzet van de uitbreiding van het DoE-diagram en het maken van een werkend prototype en testen van de digitale versie ervan.
