This chapter enquires into the resonance of junk news on Twitter during the campaign periods prior to the 2019 Dutch Provincial elections and European Parliamentary elections. Querying Twitter for political topics related to the two elections, and various divisive social issues such as Zwarte Piet and MH17, we analyse the spread and prominence of problematic sources. We also examined the claim that Twitter is susceptible to abuse by bot and troll-like users, and found that troll-like users were active across all political and issue spaces during the Dutch Provincial elections of 2019. Divisive issues remain steadily (even if marginally) active in junk news and tendentious news throughout the tested time frames, suggesting these issues are year-round rather than event-based or seasonal, as they are in the mainstream media.

It needs to take its place alongside other social sciences and humanities courses in the school curricula. They stress that the ability to impact society, to incite societal change, to participate through more means than voting, needs to be taught. Increasingly, Instagram is discussed as a site for misinformation, inau-thentic activities, and polarization, particularly in recent studies aboutelections, the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines. In this study, we havefound a different platform. By looking at the content that receives themost interactions over two time periods (in 2020) related to three U.S.presidential candidates and the issues of COVID-19, healthcare, 5G andgun control, we characterize Instagram as a site of earnest (as opposedto ambivalent) political campaigning and moral support, with a rela-tive absence of polarizing content (particularly from influencers) andlittle to no misinformation and artificial amplification practices. Mostimportantly, while misinformation and polarization might be spreadingon the platform, they do not receive much user interaction.

In ons dagelijkse leven hebben we veel met technologie te maken, vaak met interactieve, informatie-gerichte technologie: als consument doen we online boodschappen – zeker in deze pandemische tijd; als reiziger in het openbaar vervoer plannen en betalen we onze reis met interactieve technologie – nu weliswaar even wat minder; als weggebruiker navigeren we op basis van technologie; en ons energieverbruik in huis wordt ‘smart’ gemeten en geadministreerd. Als burger staan we steeds vaker middels technologie in contact met overheden. Denk aan alle online communicatie met de overheid, zo als de belastingdienst en gemeenten die middels apps, websites en de ‘Berichtenbox’ van ‘MijnOverheid’ met burgers communiceren. En er wordt over burgers en ons gedrag al heel wat data verzameld, door gemeenten, de politie, door bijvoorbeeld de zorgsector. En ook in de publieke ruimte wordt data verzameld – met smart city technologie, zoals camera’s en sensoren – met als doel om de stad veiliger, efficiënter en leefbaarder te maken. Al die ‘big data’ maakt het mogelijk om inzichten te genereren – al dan niet met kunstmatige intelligentie – en besluiten te nemen. We gebruiken technologie ook om als burger zelf actie te ondernemen. Bij de overheid kunnen we met apps melden wat er op straat verbeterd of onderhouden moet worden. Met onze buren zitten we in een WhatsApp groep of NextDoor, om bij te dragen aan de leefbaarheid en veiligheid van de buurt. We kunnen met smart home tools of citizen science kits de luchtkwaliteit meten, binnenshuis, maar ook buitenshuis. We tekenen petities, doen mee aan peilingen en enquêtes. En social networking sites (SNS) worden intensief gebruikt, voor sociale en professionele relaties, maar ook om maatschappelijk actief te zijn, voor het organiseren van het samenleven in een buurt. We weten inmiddels dat social media ook een effectief kanaal zijn om de democratie te beïnvloeden. Burgers komen dus in aanraking met veel verschillende technologieën, met verschillende doelstellingen, resultaten en bijeffecten, en waaraan mensen in allerlei functies en rollen deelnemen. Wat centraal staat in het vakgebied Civic Technology is dat de technologie in dienst staat van het burgerschap.

What makes an educational game good? This paper describes three research directions that could provide insight in the underlying principles of effective educational games. These aspects are 1) The importance of distinguishing between types of to-be-learned knowledge, 2) the need to understand the relationship between game mechanics and learning goals, and 3) using research on intelligent tutoring systems to create more personalized learning experiences. Central in these directions is the concept of cognition and how it impacts the educational effectiveness of an educational game. This paper will give a short introduction on cognition and discuss why the research directions require further research.

Twirre is a new architecture for mini-UAV platforms designed for autonomous flight in both GPS-enabled and GPS-deprived applications. The architecture consists of low-cost hardware and software components. High-level control software enables autonomous operation. Exchanging or upgrading hardware components is straightforward and the architecture is an excellent starting point for building low-cost autonomous mini-UAVs for a variety of applications. Experiments with an implementation of the architecture are in development, and preliminary results demonstrate accurate indoor navigation

PURPOSE: To study the preliminary effects and feasibility of the “Traffic Light Method for somatic screening and lifestyle” (TLM) in patients with severe mental illness. DESIGN AND METHODS: A pilot study using a quasi-experimental mixed method design with additional content analyses of lifestyle plans and logbooks. FINDINGS: Significant improvements were found in body weight and waist circumference. Positive trends were found in patients’ subjective evaluations of the TLM. The implementation of the TLM was considered feasible. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The TLM may contribute to a higher quality of care regarding somatic screening and lifestyle training.

The purpose of this literature study is to obtain information about educational approaches to teaching 11 to 12 years old children focusing on how to distinguish between real news and fake news. With this purpose we studied 16 academic papers about learning activities to make primary school children media-literate and able to recognise fake news. What we found is that having children create their own news messages seems to be the most effective approach. News messages that they create can be text messages as well as videos, audios, pictures and animations. Based on this conclusion, students from The Hague University of Applied Sciences Teacher Training Institute (PABO) have been asked to develop a set of learning materials that can be used for instruction in primary schools. The effectiveness of those materials is currently being tested at an elementary school in Rijswijk. The results of the literature and the field study will be shared in the Dutch centre of expertise for media literacy education, Mediawijzer.net.

PURPOSE: This study investigates self-injury fromthe perspective of patients with anorexia nervosa. DESIGN AND METHODS: A phenomenological design was used. Twelve patients participated. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide. FINDINGS: Participants display self-injurious behavior predominantly in situations when they are forced to eat. They are terrified of gaining weight and use selfinjurious behavior to copewith their anxiety. Self-injury is envisioned as a technique to regain control of their own eating pattern without bothering anyone. They feel shame for not controlling their emotions more constructively. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Healthcare professionals should systematically observe signals and explore less harmful strategies that help to regulate overwhelming feelings
