In 2015, the Object Management Group published the Decision Model and Notation with the goal to structure and connect business processes, decisions and underlying business logic. Practice shows that several vendors adopted the DMN standard and (started to) integrate the standard with their tooling. However, practice also shows that there are vendors who (consciously) deviate from the DMN standard while still trying to achieve the goal DMN is set out to reach. This research aims to 1) analyze and benchmark available tooling and their accompanied languages according to the DMN-standard and 2) understand the different approaches to modeling decisions and underlying business logic of these vendor specific languages. We achieved the above by analyzing secondary data. In total, 22 decision modelling tools together with their languages were analyzed. The results of this study reveal six propositions with regards to the adoption of DMN with regards to the sample of tools. These results could be utilized to improve the tools as well as the DMN standard itself to improve adoption. Possible future research directions comprise the improvement of the generalizability of the results by including more tools available and utilizing different methods for the data collection and analysis as well as deeper analysis into the generation of DMN directly from tool-native languages.

This paper seeks to contribute to sustainable business model innovation (SBMI) literature. It aims to do so by putting forward a relatively simple tool that simultaneously calculates the financial value alongside sustainability impact based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of a proposed business model innovation. For small businesses to validate the outcome of a proposed SBMI, some form of sustainability measurement will be necessary. Simple tooling specifically aimed at small businesses do not exist. We address this gap in how to predict or create a prognosis of the combined financial and sustainability effect of a proposed business model (BM) in a frugal (easy, time and knowledge effective) and effectual (allowing for iterations, available means and calculating affordable loss) manner. The tool is called the Pos-FSBC (Positive Financial and Sustainability Business Case). The instrument is a calculation model in Excel where users insert a limited number of numerical variables. Alongside financial variables the tool uniquely links the key variable ∆ SDG to the expected quantity sold, it then calculates the contribution to the SDGs in a relevant and measurable unit. By being successful with a sustainable innovation, the tool helps businesses drive out nonsustainable competitors. The tool has been iteratively developed and tested in several students’ projects and in a pilot with practitioners. Based on the findings we propose more iterations to develop an understanding whether the tool inspires business change and if so how.

Technological disruptions like the Internet of Things (IoT) drive enterprises to redefine their business models to create and capture value, and eventually, to stay competitive. The need for business model innovation may be urgent, yet it is not always clear what to change in a business model. In these cases, business model exploration is needed. Within academia and practice, business model tools are mainly focused on formalizing single business model designs rather than facilitating systematic exploration of alternative business models. In this study, we present the design and prototype of a digital tool created to facilitate business model exploration. We use Design Science Research (DSR) as our research approach. In this paper, we present the results from the first cycle evaluation of the design and prototype.

In this paper we construct a maturity model, based on earlier work, consisting of six dimensions (goal, control, process, organization, information, technology) and five maturity stages (transactional-oriented, commercial-oriented, coordination, internal-optimized, external-optimized). When using autonomous reconfigurable manufacturing system, that offers generic services, there is the possibility to dynamically manufacture a range of products using the same manufacturing equipment. Opportunities are created to optimally scale the production using reconfiguration means and automatically manufacture small amounts of unique or highly customizable products. Basically the result is a short time to market for new products. This paper discusses the problems that arise when manufacturing systems are reconfigured and the impact of this action on the entire system. The proposed software architecture and tooling makes it possible to quickly reconfigure a system without interference to other system, and shows how the reconfigured hardware can be controlled without the need to reprogram the software. Parameters that are required to control the new hardware can be added using a simple tool. As a result reconfiguration is simplified and can be achieved quickly by mechanics without reprogramming any systems. The impact is that time to market can be reduced and manufacturing systems can quickly be adapted to current real-time needs.
