Deze casestudie geeft inzicht in verschillende soorten kennis die kenmerkend zijn voor applied design research. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen kennis over de huidige situatie, over wenselijke alternatieven en over effectieve oplossingen om daar te komen. Ofwel, kennis hoe het is, kennis over hoe het kan zijn en kennis over hoe het zal zijn als we effectieve oplossingen toepassen. Elk van deze soorten kennis heeft andere kwaliteitscriteria.

In 2004 is aan de Fontys Hogescholen de nieuwe opleiding Applied Science gestart en in juli 2008 hebben we de eerste afgestudeerden kunnen feliciteren. Applied Science is een competentiegestuurde, breed natuurwetenschappelijke opleiding die zich richt op het microbiologische, chemische en chemisch technologische werkveld. Na een brede instroom kan een student door de vele keuzemogelijkheden zich specialiseren in een van de zeven beroepsdomeinen. Een belangrijk ontwerpprincipe is de verwevenheid van het werkveld in de opleiding. De eerste afgestudeerden hebben zeer succesvol de opleiding afgerond. In het vervolg van dit tijdschrift worden samenvattingen van een aantal afstudeeropdrachten gepresenteerd.

Out-of-school science educational activities, such as school visits to a science center, aim at stimulating pupils’ science talent. Science talent is a developmental potential that takes the form of talented behaviors such as curiosity and conceptual understanding. This dissertation investigates whether and how out-of-school science activities contribute to the elicitation, emergence, and development of pupils’ science talent. The context of this thesis is the Northern Netherlands Science Network, an alliance of primary schools, out-of-school science facilities, the university of Groningen, and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (www.wknn.nl). Interviews with the schools on their starting position showed that adequate communication between schools and out-of-school facilities is necessary to coordinate the participants’ educational goals. Secondly, the elicitation and expression of science talent was studied in the micro-interactions between pupils and their educator (classroom teacher or facility instructor). To do so, a multivariate coding scheme was developed to measure Pedagogical Content Knowledge expressed in real-time interaction (EPCK). The interaction shows a variable pattern over time. Sometimes episodes of high-level EPCK — so-called talent moments — emerge, in which talented pupil behavior in the form of pupils’ conceptual understanding, and talent elicitation by the educator in the form of open teaching focused on conceptual understanding, determine one another. These talent moments only occur in activities that were prepared in the classroom and with educators who were trained to evoke conceptual understanding. In het artikel staat beschreven hoe binnen de opleiding Applied Science van Fontys Hogeschool Toegepaste Natuurwetenschappen in Eindhoven een Overall Toets ontwikkeld is die aansluit bij het competentiegerichte leren. Design en onderzoek zijn twee kennisgebieden die elk hun eigen tradities, methoden, standaarden en praktijken hebben. Deze twee werelden lijken behoorlijk gescheiden, waarbij onderzoekers onderzoeken wat er is en ontwerpers visualiseren wat er zou kunnen zijn. Dit boek slaat een brug tussen beide werelden door te laten zien hoe design en onderzoek geïntegreerd kunnen worden om een nieuw kennisveld te ontwikkelen. Dit boek bevat 22 inspirerende beschouwingen die laten zien hoe de unieke kwaliteiten van onderzoek (gericht op het bestuderen van het heden) en ontwerp (gericht op het ontwikkelen van de toekomst) gecombineerd kunnen worden. Dit boek laat zien dat de transdisciplinaire aanpak toepasbaar is in een veelheid van sectoren, variërend van gezondheidszorg, stedelijke planning, circulaire economie en de voedingsindustrie. Het boek bestaat uit vijf delen en biedt een scala aan illustratieve voorbeelden, ervaringen, methoden en interpretaties. Samen vormen ze het kenmerk van een mozaïek, waarbij elk stukje een deel van het complete plaatje bijdraagt en alle stukjes samen een veelzijdig perspectief bieden op wat toegepast ontwerponderzoek is, hoe het wordt geïmplementeerd en wat de lezer ervan kan verwachten.

The evolving landscape of science communication highlights a shift from traditional dissemination to participatory engagement. This study explores Dutch citizens’ perspectives on science communication, focusing on science capital, public engagement, and communication goals. Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines survey data (n = 376) with focus group (n = 66) insights. Findings show increasing public interest in participating in science, though barriers like knowledge gaps persist. Trust-building, engaging adolescents, and integrating science into society were identified as key goals. These insights support the development of the Netherlands’ National Centre of Expertise on Science and Society and provide guidance for inclusive, effective science communication practices.

Abstract Despite the numerous business benefits of data science, the number of data science models in production is limited. Data science model deployment presents many challenges and many organisations have little model deployment knowledge. This research studied five model deployments in a Dutch government organisation. The study revealed that as a result of model deployment a data science subprocess is added into the target business process, the model itself can be adapted, model maintenance is incorporated in the model development process and a feedback loop is established between the target business process and the model development process. These model deployment effects and the related deployment challenges are different in strategic and operational target business processes. Based on these findings, guidelines are formulated which can form a basis for future principles how to successfully deploy data science models. Organisations can use these guidelines as suggestions to solve their own model deployment challenges.
