Met dit document wil ik de lezer een nieuwe invalshoek tonen op mobiliteit (Driving Guidance) en een andere benadering van automotive hbo onderwijs. De wereld om ons heen verandert en deze nieuwe wereld zal een ander type automotive ingenieur eisen. Dit is een korte weergave van een lezing voor de MBO-raad onderafdeling docenten automotive (Onderstructuur Btg MCT). De presentatie is gehouden op Miniconferentie Onderstructuur Btg MCT op 23 april 2010 bij Innovam te Nieuwegein. Kort worden trends op wereldniveau geschetst waarna wordt afgedaald naar het niveau van mijn werkplek. Het pad verloopt via niveau van Nederland, Regio Eindhoven, Helmond en tenslotte eindigt het pad bij Lectoraat Automotive Control. Als voorbeeld wordt het project Cooperative Driving getoond. Parallel aan de schets van werkzaamheden wordt besproken wat de veranderingen zijn in automotive onderwijs. Traditioneel komt automotive vanuit de invalshoek werktuigbouwkunde. De nieuwe opleidingen automotive HBO en WO zijn meer gericht op de drie componenten werktuigbouwkunde, elektrotechniek en ICT.
This chapter reports on the findings of a research project aimed at investigating the actual thermal environment of the housing of older occupants (aged 65 or over) in South Australia. The study documented their thermal preferences and behaviours during hot and cold weather and relationships to their well-being and health. Information was collected in three phases, a telephone survey, focus group discussions and detailed house environmental monitoring that employed an innovative data acquisition system to measure indoor conditions and record occupant perceptions and behaviours. The research covered three climate zones and extended over a nine-month period. The detailed monitoring involved a total of 71 participants in 57 houses. More than 10,000 comfort/well-being questionnaire responses were collected with more than 1,000,000 records of indoor environmental conditions. Analysis of the data shows the relationships between thermal sensation and self-reported well-being/health and the various adaptive strategies the occupants employ to maintain their preferred conditions. Findings from the research were used to develop targeted recommendations and design guidelines intended for older people with specific thermal comfort requirements and more broadly advice for architects, building designers and policymakers. Background: People with severe mental illnesses (SMIs) have difficulty participating in society through work or other daily activities. Aims: To establish the effectiveness with which the Boston University Approach to Psychiatric Rehabilitation (BPR) improves the level of social participation in people with SMIs, in the Netherlands. Method: In a randomized controlled trial involving 188 people with SMIs, we compared BPR (n = 98) with an Active Control Condition (ACC, n = 90) (Trial registration ISRCTN88987322). Multilevel modeling was used to study intervention effects over two six-month periods. The primary outcome measure was level of social participation, expressed as having participated in paid or unpaid employment over the past six months, as the total hours spent in paid or unpaid employment, and as the current level of social participation. Secondary outcome measures were clients’ views on rehabilitation goal attainment, Quality of Life (QOL), personal recovery, self-efficacy, and psychosocial functioning. Results: During the study, social participation, QOL, and psychosocial functioning improved in patients in both groups. However, BPR was not more effective than ACC on any of the outcomes. Better social participation was predicted by previous work experience and a lower intensity of psychiatric symptoms. Conclusions: While ACC was as effective as BPR in improving the social participation of individuals with SMIs, much higher percentages of participants in our sample found (paid) work or other meaningful activities than in observational studies without specific support for social participation. This suggests that focused rehabilitation efforts are beneficial, irrespective of the specific methodology used.
Energy transition is key to achieving a sustainable future. In this transition, an often neglected pillar is raising awareness and educating youth on the benefits, complexities, and urgency of renewable energy supply and energy efficiency. The Master Energy for Society, and particularly the course “Society in Transition”, aims at providing a first overview on the urgency and complexities of the energy transition. However, educating on the energy transition brings challenges: it is a complex topic to understand for students, especially when they have diverse backgrounds. In the last years we have seen a growing interest in the use of gamification approaches in higher institutions. While most practices have been related to digital gaming approaches, there is a new trend: escape rooms. The intended output and proposed innovation is therefore the development and application of an escape room on energy transition to increase knowledge and raise motivation among our students by addressing both hard and soft skills in an innovative and original way. This project is interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary due to the complexity of the topic; it consists of three different stages, including evaluation, and requires the involvement of students and colleagues from the master program. We are confident that this proposed innovation can lead to an improvement, based on relevant literature and previous experiences in other institutions, and has the potential to be successfully implemented in other higher education institutions in The Netherlands.
Het RAAK-MKB project "(G)een Moer Aan" heeft zich gericht op het ontwerpen van een veilige en effectieve ondersteuning van een cobot in een productieomgeving. De focus is hierbij gelegd op productiehandelingen die in veel sectoren voorkomen en die relatief veel arbeidstijd kosten, zoals het indraaien van moeren en bouten in een object. Binnen het project is veel kennis opgedaan dit heeft geresulteerd in gripperontwerpen die in staat zijn een bout in een flens te draaien. Daarnaast is kennis gegeneerd van vision technieken om gaten e.d. te detecteren, en het meenemen van (beleefde) veiligheid in het ontwerp van een cobot systeem. Deze nieuw opgedane kennis is erg bruikbaar voor zowel de beroepspraktijk als voor de studenten in het onderwijs. Dat maakt het relevant voor (her)gebruik middels het nieuwe open-acces e-learning platform van Fontys: Open Learning Labs. Door trainingsmateriaal te ontwikkelen dat betrekking heeft op onder andere het aspect veilig ontwerpen, worden toekomstige engineers (de studenten) en zittend personeel bij bedrijven bekend met nieuwe technieken die toepasbaar zijn in diverse sectoren waar met robots gewerkt wordt. Het doel van deze Top-up aanvraag is tweeledig: 1) Het vergroten van de zichtbaarheid van de resultaten uit het initiële RAAK-project, zowel richting onderwijs, onderzoek en beroepspraktijk. 2) Het realiseren van trainingsmateriaal t.b.v. het rekening houden met en veilig ontwerpen van cobotsystemen. Door o.a. kennis aan te dragen omtrent het doen van een correcte risico analyse van het proces. Dit zal bij toekenning stapsgewijs uitgevoerd worden: 1. Definiëren inhoud lesmodules en bijbehorende didactische werkvormen 2. Realisatie PR- & instructievideo's en onderwijsopdrachten 3. Realisatie E-learning lesmodule Dit alles gekoppeld aan het open-acces e-learning platform Open Learning Labs van Fontys.
Designing cities that are socially sustainable has been a significant challenge until today. Lately, European Commission’s research agenda of Industy 5.0 has prioritised a sustainable, human-centric and resilient development over merely pursuing efficiency and productivity in societal transitions. The focus has been on searching for sustainable solutions to societal challenges, engaging part of the design industry. In architecture and urban design, whose common goal is to create a condition for human life, much effort was put into elevating the engineering process of physical space, making it more efficient. However, the natural process of social evolution has not been given priority in urban and architectural research on sustainable design. STEPS stems from the common interest of the project partners in accessible, diverse, and progressive public spaces, which is vital to socially sustainable urban development. The primary challenge lies in how to synthesise the standardised sustainable design techniques with unique social values of public space, propelling a transition from technical sustainability to social sustainability. Although a large number of social-oriented studies in urban design have been published in the academic domain, principles and guidelines that can be applied to practice are large missing. How can we generate operative principles guiding public space analysis and design to explore and achieve the social condition of sustainability, developing transferable ways of utilising research knowledge in design? STEPS will develop a design catalogue with operative principles guiding public space analysis and design. This will help designers apply cross-domain knowledge of social sustainability in practice.
